Controversies in neonatal nutrition.

The assessment of growth parameters remains one of the most practical and valuable tools to estimate nutritional status in neonates. Growth assessment in full-term infants is performed by using charts developed by the National Center for Health and Statistics. The assessment of post-natal growth in premature infants is controversial and can be performed by using either intrauterine or extrauterine standards. The selection of appropriate growth charts should be based on clinical, demographic, ethnic, and socioeconomic similarities of the population used for reference. Daily energy intakes rangi

Allergenicity evaluation of an extensively hydrolyzed infant formula based on cow milk protein.

Cow milk protein allergy (CMPA) is the most common food allergy in infants. Currently, hypoallergenic infant formulas on the market are mainly divided into extensively hydrolyzed whey protein formulas and extensively hydrolyzed casein formulas. There are few extensively hydrolyzed infant formulas (EHFs) with a similar protein composition to breast milk. Therefore, we developed a hypoallergenic infant formula based on extensively hydrolyzed cow milk protein (whey protein-to-casein ratio of 6 : 4) and evaluated its allergenicity in vitro and in vivo. The results showed that the antigenicity of E

Iodine intake in the youngest: impact of commercial complementary food.

Iodine is a nutrient contributing to the development of the central nervous system. To assure a sufficient iodine intake, iodine fortification of complementary food (CF) is recommended. We describe the current fortification practice of commercial CF and formula in Germany as an example for other European countries, based on a market survey conducted in autumn 2008. In addition, we estimated the iodine intake of an 8-month-old infant, fed one portion of milk and three complementary meals per day. All formulae were fortified with iodine, and half of CF products. Iodine concentration varied depen

Exploring why junk foods are 'essential' foods and how culturally tailored recommendations improved feeding in Egyptian children.

In Egypt, the double burden of malnutrition and rising overweight and obesity in adults mirrors the transition to westernized diets and a growing reliance on energy-dense, low-nutrient foods. This study utilized the trials of improved practices (TIPs) methodology to gain an understanding of the cultural beliefs and perceptions related to feeding practices of infants and young children 0-23 months of age and used this information to work in tandem with 150 mothers to implement feasible solutions to feeding problems in Lower and Upper Egypt. The study triangulated in-depth interviews (IDIs) with

Food Protein-Induced Allergic Proctocolitis: Real-World Experience from an Italian Cohort.

Background/Objectives: Food protein-induced allergic proctocolitis (FPIAP) is a non-IgE-mediated food allergy, usually presenting as bloody stools in breastfed, well-appearing, and regularly growing infants. The aim of our study was to describe the clinical features of Italian infants affected by FPIAP and their management and natural history in a real-life setting. Methods: A retrospective, observational study was performed at two tertiary pediatric hospitals (Florence and Trieste), including FPIAP-diagnosed infants between 2012 and 2022. Results: Most of the 100 enrolled patients were breast

Allergen-specific immunoglobulin E antibodies in wheezing infants: the risk for asthma in later childhood.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether the measurement of specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies to food and/or inhalant allergens in infants who are hospitalized for wheezing can be used to predict later asthma. METHODS: Eighty-two children who were hospitalized for wheezing at <2 years of age were followed prospectively until early school age. The baseline data and the characteristics of infancy had been collected at enrollment. At school age, the children were evaluated for asthma and allergic manifestations, including skin prick tests to common inhalant allergens. Frozen serum samples obtaine

Food Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome.

Food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES) is a non-IgE-mediated food allergy that manifests with projectile, repetitive emesis that can be followed by diarrhea and may be accompanied by lethargy, hypotonia, hypothermia, hypotension, and metabolic derangements. FPIES usually starts in infancy although onset at older ages is being increasingly recognized. FPIES is not rare, with the cumulative incidence of FPIES in infants estimated to be 0.015% to 0.7%, whereas the population prevalence in the US infants was 0.51%. FPIES diagnosis is challenging and might be missed because of later (1

[Clinical physiological aspects of the effectiveness of Vitalact milk in the nutrition of nursing infants].

The effect of 3 types of milk diet (breast milk, ordinary milk mixtures and adapted "Vitalact" milk) on young infants was studied and compared. It was found that the rate of metabolic processes, physical development and health depend to a great extent on the degree of the diet supply with basic food substances. "Vitalact" milk is a full-value foodstuff had meets all the infants' requirements of basic food substances and biologically active factors. High rate of bioenergy processes in the body attained as a result of feeding with balanced diet and its optimal supply with polyunsaturated fatty a

Maternal Adverse Childhood Experiences and Delayed Initiation of Complementary Foods: A Nationwide Online Cohort Study.

Background/Objectives: Infant feeding is critical for health and development, yet the influence of maternal psychosocial factors on its timing is not fully understood. While maternal adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are known to affect perinatal outcomes, their impact on the specific timing of initiating formula and complementary foods remains under-investigated. We hypothesized that maternal ACEs are associated with delayed initiation of infant formula and complementary foods and that this association is mediated by postpartum depression (PPD). This study aimed to examine the link between

Historical Research: The Origin of 'Formula': State of the Science, 1890s.

In 1900, 13% of infants in the United States died before their first birthday, most of dehydration from diarrhea. As part of a nationwide effort to "save the babies," pediatricians focused on several endeavors-experimenting with commercially made infant-food products; working with dairy farmers to clean up cows' milk; lobbying to pass municipal and state legislation regulating the dairy industry; and devising mathematical "formulas" that represented instructions to chemists on how to "humanize" cows' milk for the needs of a particular infant. Pediatricians dubbed the latter endeavor "percentag

A preliminary study of fonio-moringa seed meal-based complementary food in Wistar rats.

Effect of fonio-moringa seed meal (FMSM)-based complementary food in Wistar rats was assessed in a 28 days balanced study. Seventy, 21-day-old Wistar rats were allotted to seven groups in a completely randomized design. Infant weaning foods (IWFs) 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 had 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% FMSM inclusion levels, respectively, while two commercial IWFs purchased were coded CFT and CFC. The water absorption capacity, swelling power, and the pasting properties, except peak time varied (p < .05) among the IWFs. Rats fed on IWFs 3 and 4 had comparable weight gain with those fed on the commerci

Epidemiology of food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To summarize the epidemiology of food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES). RECENT FINDINGS: FPIES is regarded as a rare non-IgE-mediated gastrointestinal allergic disorder. Older nonpopulation-based studies reported an average of 1-15 cases presenting to allergy clinics a year, but recent studies have reported figures as high as 90 cases a year. The yearly incidence of FPIES in one Australian study was one in 10,000 infants less than 2 years of age. Chronic FPIES typically presents in neonates, whereas acute FPIES is primarily a disorder of young infants. FPIES h

Toxemia in Human Naturally Acquired Botulism.

Human botulism is a severe disease characterized by flaccid paralysis and inhibition of certain gland secretions, notably salivary secretions, caused by inhibition of neurotransmitter release. Naturally acquired botulism occurs in three main forms: food-borne botulism by ingestion of preformed botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) in food, botulism by intestinal colonization (infant botulism and intestinal toxemia botulism in infants above one year and adults), and wound botulism. A rapid laboratory confirmation of botulism is required for the appropriate management of patients. Detection of BoNT in the
