The effect of hydrolyzed cow's milk formula for allergy prevention in the first year of life: the German Infant Nutritional Intervention Study, a randomized double-blind trial.

BACKGROUND: The potential of extensively or partially hydrolyzed formulas to reduce the risks for allergies is controversial. OBJECTIVE: We sought to assess the preventive effect of differently hydrolyzed formulas compared with cow's milk formula (CMF) in high-risk infants. METHODS: Between 1995 and 1998, 2252 infants with a hereditary risk for atopy were enrolled in the German Infant Nutritional Intervention Study and randomly assigned at birth to one of 4 blinded formulas: CMF, partially hydrolyzed whey formula, extensively hydrolyzed whey formula, and extensively hydrolyzed casein formula

The effect of infant formula-based powder containing milk fat globule membrane on the 4-kingdom cornerstone microbiota in the feces and the immune ability of suckling rats.

Growing evidence demonstrates that the 4-kingdom intestinal microbiota (FKIM) play a critical role in improving the body's immune processes. Three batches of experiments were conducted to study the effects of infant formula-based powder (IFBP) containing milk fat globule membrane (MFGM), human milk oligosaccharides, and probiotics, respectively, on the FKIM of suckling rats, with the IFBP serving as the control. Compared with the control, 3 functional components could increase the body weight and improve the composition of FKIM. Notably, suckling rats supplemented with MFGM had significantly h…

Development, validation, and uncertainty measurement of HPLC-DAD method for determination of some free amino acids in infant formula and medical food products for inborn errors of metabolism.

This research aims at determining some free amino acids in amino acid-based infant formulas and amino acid-modified medical foods for inborn errors of metabolism to prove their quality. A method based on high-performance liquid chromatography and diode array detection was developed and validated. Then, overall uncertainty was estimated by the bottom-up approach. Applying the weighted least squares regression method suggested good linearity with coefficient of determinations ≥ 0.9960. The limits of detection were calculated between 0.01 and 0.28 μg/mL. The most repetitive recovery values were o…

Body composition trajectories of healthy, term infants receiving milk formula with large, milk phospholipid-coated lipid droplets enriched in dairy lipids.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Childhood obesity is a global public health threat. Breastfeeding is associated with a protective effect on childhood overweight. Since breastfeeding is not always possible, infant formula (IF) should provide nutritional and functional properties as close as possible to human milk. We investigated body composition trajectories during the first 2 years of life of infants receiving until age 6 months Concept IF, containing large, phospholipid-coated lipid droplets enriched with dairy lipids, more closely mimicking human milk fat globule characteristics, in comparison with a co…

Addition of Dairy Lipids and Probiotic Lactobacillus fermentum in Infant Formulas Modulates Proteolysis and Lipolysis With Moderate Consequences on Gut Physiology and Metabolism in Yucatan Piglets.

Breast milk is the gold standard in neonatal nutrition, but most infants are fed infant formulas in which lipids are usually of plant origin. The addition of dairy lipids and/or milk fat globule membrane extracts in formulas improves their composition with beneficial consequences on protein and lipid digestion. The probiotic Lactobacillus fermentum (Lf) was reported to reduce transit time in rat pups, which may also improve digestion. This study aimed to investigate the effects of the addition of dairy lipids in formulas, with or without Lf, on protein and lipid digestion and on gut physiology…

Feeding of lactic acid-fermented high nutrient density weaning formula in paediatric settings in Ghana and Nigeria: acceptance by mother and infant and performance during recovery from acute diarrhoea.

A period of acute diarrhoea in infants is often associated with anorexia and weight loss. Catch-up growth is, therefore, necessary and this depends very much on the type of food, in terms of nutrient density, protein quality and digestibility, given to the child. Fermented (F) and non-fermented (NF) maize-soybean porridges of increased nutrient density were formulated and compared with traditionally fermented maize-only porridge (P) for acceptability using mothers in peri-urban Ghana as well as urban Nigeria as subjects. Subsequently, infants hospitalised in paediatric wards for acute diarrhoe

Effect of bovine and buffalo ghee fractionation on triacylglycerol profile, lipid nutritional quality indices, thermal behavior, and tocopherol content: A comparative analysis with 2 categories of infant formula fat.

The increased use of dairy fat in various applications is facilitated by its fractionation into hard and liquid fractions. Herein, the fractionation of bovine ghee and buffalo ghee was investigated, and triacylglycerol (TAG) profiles of milk fat fractions and 2 categories of infant formula fat were quantified by using ultraperformance convergence chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight MS (UPC2-Q-TOF-MS) using carbon dioxide as the mobile phase. Furthermore, the thermal behavior of the different samples was evaluated, and tocopherol content was also quantified. A total of 176, 188, and 84 TAG…

Determination of Free and Total Carnitine and Choline in Infant Formulas and Adult Nutritional Products by UPLC/MS/MS: Single-Laboratory Validation, First Action 2014.04.

A single-laboratory validation (SLV) has been performed for a method that simultaneously determines choline and carnitine in nutritional products by ultra performance LC (UPLC)/MS/MS. All 11 matrixes from the AOAC Stakeholder Panel on Infant Formula and Adult Nutritionals (SPIFAN) were tested. Depending on the sample preparation, either the added (free, with a water dilution and filtering) or total (after microwave digestion at 120°C in nitric acid and subsequent neutralization with ammonia) species can be detected. For nonmilk containing products, the total carnitine is almost always equal to…

[Evaluation of the effect of a new milk formula with added nucleotides on some gastrointestinal functions. Results of a nation-wide study of 5009 infants. Pediatric Study Group].

BACKGROUND: The signs and symptoms of gastrointestinal function represent one of the most frequent reasons for pediatric consultation during the first four months of life. Few studies have evaluated these clinical conditions in relation to infant diet. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a new formula enriched with nucleotides (Similac Formula Plus-Abbott) on fecal consistency, wind and regurgitation. METHODS: The study was carried out using an observational type, prospective design which involved 778 pediatricians throughout Italy. From November 1996 to June 1997, a total of

Symptomatology and growth in infants with cow's milk protein intolerance using two different whey-protein hydrolysate based formulas in a Primary Health Care setting.

Both growth and the course of allergic symptoms were evaluated in 79 infants with cow's milk protein intolerance, aged three months or younger, diagnosed by standard elimination/provocation and treated with a whey-hydrolysate based infant formula: Nutrilon Pept or Pepti Junior. The efficacy of both products, in terms of symptomatology and growth, was compared with each other. The products differ in fat source (Pepti Junior 50% of its fat as MCT, Nutrilon Pepti normal LCT fat blend) and the presence of lactose (Pepti Junior: lactose free; Nutrilon Pepti: 40% of its carbohydrate as lactose). GERD management in neonatal ICU infants: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial comparing maturation, added rice starch formula and proton pump inhibitors.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) diagnosis among infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is high and varies across USA NICUs. GERD diagnosis is challenging as symptoms can be physiological and association is difficult to determine without objective testing methods. Precision diagnostics using 24-hour pH-impedance (pH-Imp) studies with symptom correlation to reflux events have been developed and validated for this population. Current empiric-based, non-standardized GERD management practices are highly variable and are widely untested for safety and
