Evaluation of a programme for control of schistosoma haematobium infection in Yemen.

An intervention study was conducted in Khamir, north of Sana'a, for control of urinary schistosomiasis using chemotherapy and health education. The validity and cost-effectiveness of reagent strips as a rapid diagnostic tool to screen for Schistosoma haematobium infection was also assessed along with visible haematuria. Prevalence of S. haematobium infection 14 months post-intervention fell from 58.9% to 5.8% and frequency of heavy infection from 40.0% to 18.9%. Health education sessions resulted in significant decrease in the frequency of contact with water sources and greater adherence to pr

Role of the clinical microbiology laboratory in infection control--a Danish perspective.

Clinical microbiology laboratories in Denmark are located in hospitals and staffed by clinical microbiologists who are clinically trained medical doctors. Each county has its own clinical microbiology unit, serving a population of 0.3-0.6 million. The responsibilities of clinical microbiology unit cover many different aspects of infection control. They include detection of outbreaks of hospital-acquired infections, screening for multi-resistant organisms, advice to clinicians about disinfection, sterilization and isolation procedures, and the rational use of antibiotics. Clinical microbiologis…

Prevention of tuberculosis. Vigilance and infection control strategies are mainstays of efforts.

Until a vaccine is available, efforts to control the spread of TB will continue to rely on the effective use of our currently available tools and the diligence of primary care physicians. Rapid diagnosis, directly observed therapy, public health and infection control measures, and appropriate preventive therapy remain the mainstays of TB control. Physicians in the primary care setting, particularly those serving long-term-care institutions or other high-risk populations, need to be keenly aware of the possibility of TB in their patient population and of the methods available in their community…

[Risk factors for nosocomial bacterial infection in children: a case-control study].

With the objective to identify independent risk factors associated with the development of nosocomial bacteremia, we have performed a prospective, exploratory, case-control study. All non-neutropenic children with nosocomial bacteremia admitted during a seven-month period were eligible. All children non-neutropenic without nosocomial bacteremia were eligible as controls. The incidence of bacteremia in the study population was 11.3/1000 admissions. Ninety one cases and ninety nine controls were analyzed. In 46% of patients clinical foci were detected. The catheter-related infection was the most

Application of guidelines for occupational HIV infection control during delivery in Italy.

OBJECTIVE: We surveyed the attitudes of Italian obstetricians toward the application of HIV infection control guidelines during labour and delivery proposed by the Italian National Committee for HIV Infection. STUDY DESIGN: We identified 66 obstetric centres affiliated to the AOGOI (Association of Italian Gynecologists and Obstetricians). A postal questionnaire was sent to 752 physicians in charge in the centres. RESULTS: A total of 419 clinicians (55.7%) completed and returned the form to the coordinating centre. Obstetricians were directly asked about the need for routine adoption of the I…

A case control study of chorioamniotic infection and histological chorioamnionitis in stillbirth.

In order to elucidate the role and aetiology of chorioamnionitis in stillbirth a case referent study was carried out in 58 pregnant women with late foetal death (cases) and in 58 pregnant women at term with live foetus (referents) matched for age and parity in Maputo Mozambique. Samples from women, stillborns and liveborns, were collected for microbiological and histological assessment. Histological chorioamnionitis was diagnosed in 96% of the cases and in 67% of the referents (OR = 13.5; 95% CI: 2.9-123.9). Escherichia coli was the species most frequently isolated in stillborns; in 14/16 (88%

Pancreatitis associated with human immunodeficiency virus infection: a matched case-control study.

To determine the frequency of pancreatitis and to define risk factors for pancreatitis in patients with AIDS, we compared patients with pancreatitis to patients without pancreatitis in an urban infectious disease practice. Pancreatitis was defined as at least one clinical sign or symptom (nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, or tenderness) accompanied by elevation of serum amylase or lipase. Twenty-four (22%) of 105 patients with AIDS, 2 (4%) of 46 patients with AIDS-related complex, 1 (3%) of 39 asymptomatic patients infected with HIV-1, and none of 9 uninfected patients at risk for HIV-1 develo

Specific immune responses are required to control parasitemia in Babesia equi infection.

Horses possessing a normal immune system and spleen often control infection caused by Babesia equi. However, splenectomized horses are unable to control B. equi infection and usually succumb to the infection. To investigate the role of the spleen in the control of B. equi infection in the absence of specific immune responses, two 1-month-old foals with severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) and two age-matched normal foals were inoculated with B. equi. The SCID foals became febrile seven days postinoculation and developed terminal parasitemias of 41 and 29%. The SCID foals had greater than 50

Postcesarean section wound infection: A case-control study of the risk factors.

A retrospective, case-control study was performed to determine risk factors associated with wound infection after cesarean section. There were 95 wound infections among 1,442 cesarean sections performed denoting a wound infection rate of 6.6%. The records of these 95 patients and 95 controls were studied. The following variables were significantly associated with wound infection: length of labor, rupture of membranes and delivery interval, number of vaginal examinations performed preoperatively, presence of chorioamnionitis, operating time, estimated blood loss during surgery, and obesity. Ele

Epidemiological characteristics of Legionella infection in South Australia: implications for disease control.

About one third of adults surveyed in South Australia have shown evidence of past silent infection with Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1. However, the annual notification rate for symptomatic disease is only about 0.5 per 100,000 residents in non-epidemic years. The male to female ratio is 2.5 to one and approximately 50% of the cases are at least 60 years of age. Cases have presented more in summer and in the metropolitan areas. Twenty cases of Legionnaires' disease occurred during the summer of 1985-86. A cooling tower was held to be the principal source with aerosols being dispersed up to

Effective control of a gentamicin-resistant Salmonella arizonae infection in turkey poults.

A gentamicin-resistant Salmonella arizonae isolate was identified as the cause of an unusually high early mortality rate in several flocks of poults produced by a primary turkey breeder. The company routinely dipped its hatching eggs in 500 ppm gentamicin before incubation and injected each poult at 1 day of age with 1 mg gentamicin. Mortality was reduced to normal, but S. arizonae was not eliminated by injecting the day-old poults with higher doses of gentamicin. S. arizonae was not isolated from sample normal-sized poults in treated groups when tetracyclines were used for antibiotic inoculat

The diagnosis, epidemiology and control of urinary infection in urology and gynaecology.

In a study of the urine after urological operations, quantitative bacteriological criteria for the diagnosis of infection were determined. The bacteria responsible for urinary infection after urological or gynaecological procedures sometimes came from the same patient, but more often came from other patients by cross-infection. The principal final route of entry was the urethra or the indwelling catheter lying in it. These findings led to the elaboration of methods of destroying bacteria in the urethra before operation, improving the disinfection of cystoscopes, and preventing the entry of bac

Dual-Action Sutures: Chlorhexidine and Dexamethasone for Infection Control and Inflammation Suppression.

Surgical site infections (SSIs) remain a major clinical challenge, particularly due to bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation on suture materials. In this study, we developed a dual drug-eluting suture incorporating chlorhexidine (CHX) and dexamethasone (DEX), with lauric acid used as a binding agent to enhance drug adhesion. The exact composition of the system was CHX/DEX/Lauric Acid, designed to enable localized delivery of both therapeutic agents at the implantation site. Vicryl sutures were dip-coated and characterized by means of FTIR-ATR and HPLC to confirm drug incorporation and relea

Challenging cases in infection prevention and control: proceedings from SHEA Spring 2025.

Hospital epidemiologists and infection prevention professionals are frequently required to make high-stakes decisions in complex clinical scenarios where evidence-based guidance is limited or absent. These decisions often carry significant implications for patient safety, healthcare worker protection, hospital operations, and legal or financial risk. This article presents three challenging cases originally featured during the "Interesting Cases" session at the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) Spring 2025 Conference, with the goal of sharing practical lessons learned and co
