Aerosolized cyclosporine was the first calcineurin inhibitor to be developed for inhaled administration. Its use as a topical immunosuppressant after lung transplantation is reviewed. Animal studies in transplant and non-transplant models are considered, as is nebulized delivery of the drug, including the results of scintigraphy and pharmacokinetic studies. The use of inhaled steroids in the treatment of asthma is not without its complications. In some studies up to 50% of such patients complain of oropharyngeal and voice problems. We present the findings in 22 patients complaining of dysphonia who underwent videostrobolaryngoscopy (VSL) and computerized speech analysis. A number of abnormalities were identified. There is an alarming increase in the number of children and adolescents inhaling chemicals for euphoric purposes. This trend merits serious concern, as abuse of inhalants can cause cardiac arrest, asphyxiation, and accidents. Substances such as gas, butane, and lighter fluid are highly toxic and destroy organs, and in some cases, inhalants have caused death on the first use. Pediatric nurses are in a key position to identify abusers and educate parents and children about these potentially fatal chemicals.

BACKGROUND: Two patients experienced itching conjunctivitis, running nose, tightness of the throat and coughing during preparation of fresh asparagus.
