Association between Dental Amalgam Filling and Essential Tremor: A Nationwide Population-Based Case Control Study in Taiwan.

Essential tremor (ET) is a common neurological disorder and the most common movement disorder. Low-level occupational exposure to mercury vapor is known to be a crucial factor that increases the risk of tremor. Dental amalgam is one of the main sources of mercury in those who possess amalgam restorations. However, the relationship between ET and amalgam filling (AMF) is not quite clear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between AMF and the risk of ET using a population-based administrative databank. The data for this study were sourced from the Taiwanese National Hea

Virtual surgical planning: Balancing esthetics, practicality, and anticipated stability in a complex Class III patient.

The treatment of skeletal Class III malocclusion with anterior open bite is a complex and challenging aspect of orthodontics. Facial esthetic factors, practicality and the anticipated stability of a provisional surgical plan must all be factored into the final decision of the actual orthodontic-orthognathic treatment. This case report presents the multidisciplinary treatment of a 39-year-old female patient with skeletal Class III, severe open bite with first dental contact being on the second molars, lateral crossbite, and crowding in both arches. The nonextraction treatment started with align

Which procedures and materials could be applied for full pulpotomy in permanent mature teeth? A systematic review.

Objective: Coronal pulpotomies were recently re-investigated as an alternative to root canal treatment in vital permanent teeth. General dentists may be interested in knowing how to perform full pulpotomy, in particular in face of difficult endodontic cases of vital teeth. Material and methods: A systematic review was undertaken on the PubMed and Cochrane databases in order to determine which procedure should be applied for pulp capping and coronal restoration in routine dental practice. Fifty-three publications were included and allocated to one of two methodological categories: histological

Does health literacy mediate the relationship between socioeconomic status and health related outcomes in the Belgian adult population?

BACKGROUND: Health literacy (HL) has been put forward as a potential mediator through which socioeconomic status (SES) affects health. This study explores whether HL mediates the relation between SES and a selection of health or health-related outcomes. METHODS: Data from the participants of the Belgian health interview survey 2018 aged 18 years or older were individually linked with data from the Belgian compulsory health insurance (n = 8080). HL was assessed with the HLS-EU-Q6. Mediation analyses were performed with health behaviour (physical activity, diet, alcohol and tobacco consumption)

Periodontitis and the Incidence of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases: A Nationwide Population-Based Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: Periodontitis and other oral health indicators are reportedly related to systemic inflammation. Our study aimed to investigate a possible association of oral health status (periodontitis and number of missing teeth) and oral hygiene behaviors (frequency of tooth brushing, dental visit, and dental scaling) with the risk of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) incidence. METHODS: Using the Korean National Health Insurance Database, we conducted a nationwide, population-based cohort study involving participants from the 2003 national health screening program. We followed these individu

An Interdisciplinary Treatment Approach for Congenitally Missing Teeth: A Case Report.

The absence of teeth from birth, also known as congenitally missing teeth (CMT) or hypodontia, is quite common, and generally, treatment is expensive. Patients with missing teeth can have more than just a poor appearance. They might also experience malaligned teeth, gum damage, poor jawbone growth, trouble chewing, unclear speech, and other issues. Treatment is often expensive and involves multiple specialties. This common but costly issue is important to many dental specialties, including orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, prosthodontics, periodontics, maxillofacial surgery, anatomy, and even
