A 65-year-old female received recombinant interferon (IFN) alpha-2b daily for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C. Fever (39 degrees C or higher) developed 14 days after the start of administration. Abdominal computed tomography suggested multiple liver abscesses, which had not been detected before IFN administration. An autopsy revealed an amoebic liver abscess. A subclinical infection of Entamoeba histolytica in this case developed into amoebic liver abscess during IFN administration.

The therapy of metastatic melanoma is limited by poor responses to known chemotherapeutic agents. The report of Mulder et al. A female patient simultaneously developed hematologic evidence of hairy cell leukemia and marked but short-lived inflammatory involvement of a number of joints. Both these groups of symptoms resolved simultaneously and rapidly under alpha-2 interferon therapy. This course suggests that the arthritis was a rheumatologic manifestation of the hematologic disease. The concomitant occurrence in this patient of arthritis, splenomegaly and leukopenia was suggestive of Felty syndrome: these two conditions need to be differentiated.

23 newly diagnosed patients affected by cutaneous T-cell lymphoma were treated with sub-cutaneous interferon alpha-2a to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy and the toxicity of this agent. Ten patients suffering from discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) or subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus (SCLE) were treated with interferon alpha 2a. A marked improvement or clearing of cutaneous lupus erythematosus lesions was observed in eight of them. We report a case of Coombs positive autoimmune hemolytic anemia occurring in a patient with chronic hepatitis C, never treated with interferon-alpha. Prednisone treatment induced the complete remission of both clinical and hematological findings after 2 months. In postpubertal men orchitis is the most common complication of mumps infection, occurring in 5-37% of this population. A bilateral manifestation is observed in 16-65%. The most important danger is the risk of developing testicular atrophy, which results in sterility. The efficacy of recombinant interferon-alpha 2 in the treatment of advanced hairy cell leukaemia is investigated in 31 patients. Preliminary results show a complete and partial response rate of 69%. An optimal dose study utilizing maximal stimulation of an interferon-dependent pathway was carried out in 5 patients. The optimal dose of the order of 5 X 10(5) IU/day is effective and without side-effects. Interferon treatment did not enhance natural killer cell activity and therefore a direct mode of action upon tumour cells is proposed.

A total of 49 patients with metastatic renal cell cancer underwent recombinant interferon-alpha 2a therapy combined with chemotherapy. Before therapy the patients without nephrectomy underwent angioinfarction of the primary renal tumor.
