A comprehensive evaluation of the neurocognitive predictors of problematic alcohol use, eating, pornography, and internet use: A 6-month longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Cognitive control and reward-related abnormalities are centrally implicated in addiction. However, findings from longitudinal studies addressing neurocognitive predictors of addictive behaviors are mixed. Further, little work has been conducted predicting non-substance-related addictive behaviors. Our study aimed to assess predictors of substance and non-substance addictive behaviors in a community sample, systematically evaluating each neurocognitive function's independent influence on addictive behavior. METHODS: Australians (N = 294; 51.7% female; M[SD] age = 24.8[4.7]

Psychopathological Correlates of Dysfunctional Smartphone and Social Media Use: The Role of Personality Disorders in Technological Addiction and Digital Life Balance.

Current technological development has made the Internet and new technologies increasingly present in people's lives, expanding their opportunities but also potentially posing risks for dysfunctional use. This study aims to identify psychopathological factors associated with dysfunctional ICT use, extending the evidence beyond the well-established relationships with mood disorders to include personality disorders (i.e., cluster C in particular). A total of 711 participants (75.70% female; Mage = 28.33 years, SD = 12.30) took part in the data collection. Firstly, the results showed positive corr

[Current approaches to the treatment and correction of Internet addiction].

According to WHO consensus decision, gambling disorder, including the form of Internet addiction (IA), should be included in the section 'Impulsive disorders and behavioral addictions' of ICD-11. Population studies in the USA and Europe show the prevalence of IA from 1.5 to 8.2%, and in the countries of Southeast Asia it reaches 20-30% among young people. All this raises questions about the development of standardized approaches to the treatment and correction of this disorder. The review covers pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches. Several studies and clinical observations have

Tendencies toward Internet-pornography-use disorder: Differences in men and women regarding attentional biases to pornographic stimuli.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Several authors consider Internet-pornography-use disorder (IPD) as addictive disorder. One of the mechanisms that has been intensively studied in substance- and non-substance-use disorders is an enhanced attentional bias toward addiction-related cues. Attentional biases are described as cognitive processes of individual's perception affected by the addiction-related cues caused by the conditioned incentive salience of the cue itself. It is assumed in the I-PACE model that in individuals prone to develop IPD symptoms implicit cognitions as well as cue-reactivity and cravin

Similarities and Differences in Neuroimaging.

Addiction is a chronically relapsing disease characterized by drug intoxication, craving, bingeing, and withdrawal with loss of control. An expanding body of literature has suggested that non-substance addictions, such as internet addiction and pathological gambling, exhibit shared clinical, phenomenological, and biological features with substance-based addictions. With the development of imaging technology in the past three decades, neuroimaging studies have yielded critical insights into the neurobiological implications of substance and non-substance addictions, revealing neurochemical and f

"Feeling unseen": Generation and psychometric validation of a scale assessing sense of absence.

BACKGROUND: Online addictive behaviors are common among adolescents and may reflect efforts to cope with inner emptiness, loneliness, or emotional pain. These behaviors suggest a deeper form of emotional disconnection that existing constructs do not fully capture. To address this gap, the present study developed the Sense of Absence Scale (SoAS), a measure designed to assess adolescents' experiences of inner void, relational invisibility, and reduced engagement in daily life. METHOD: Participants included 1,555 non-clinical adolescents aged 14-18 years. Psychometric analyses included Explorat

Digital behavioral addictions in adolescents and young adults: Protocol for a scoping review of definitions, measurement, epidemiology, determinants, harms, interventions, and equity.

BACKGROUND: Digital behaviors associated with impaired control and functional impairment are described using heterogeneous terms and measures. Gaming Disorder is recognized in ICD-11, Internet Gaming Disorder remains a DSM-5-TR condition for further study, and problematic social media and smartphone use are research constructs rather than established diagnoses. These distinctions avoid equating screening-positive use with clinical disorder. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review will map definitions, measurement, epidemiology, determinants, harms, interventions, implementation, and equity among adole

Predicting Anxiety and Depression Based on Video Game Addiction with the Mediating Role of Social Support.

BACKGROUND: Today, computer games have become one of the most popular forms of entertainment, especially among teenagers. While games may have various benefits, video games are shown to have different consequences for players, especially those who are younger, and can be highly addictive. The present research investigated the effect of computer game addiction on anxiety and depression in adolescents with the mediating role of social support. METHODS: Overall, 304 adolescents aged 12-18 years old living in Tehran were included in the research through a convenient method. The required data were

The Role of Videogame Micro-Transactions in the Relationship Between Motivations, Problem Gaming, and Problem Gambling.

Emerging research has highlighted potential associations between micro-transaction use and problematic videogame and gambling behaviour. An increasingly prominent theory highlights that self-determined motivations and basic psychological needs may play crucial roles in the development of problematic videogame and gambling behaviour. However, literature discussing the role that micro-transaction use has in this relationship is scarce. The present study examined the role of micro-transactions in the relationship between self-determined motivations for gaming and gambling and problematic behaviou

Sustainability & social segmentation in social media contagion: A mathematical and computational study on dual effects of individual needs & peer influence.

Addiction to internet-based social media has increasingly emerged as a critical social problem, especially among young adults and teenagers. Based on multiple research studies, excessive usage of social media may have detrimental psychological and physical impacts. In this study, we are going to explore mathematically the dynamics of social media addiction behavior and explore the determinants of compulsive use of social media from the dual perspectives of individual needs or cravings and peer-related factors or peer pressure. The theoretical analysis of the model without the peer pressure eff

Unequal roles of symptoms in Internet gaming disorder: A network analysis in early adolescence and emerging adulthood.

Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD), recognized as a psychiatric condition especially prevalent among young people, still requires further clarification regarding the age-related differences. The current study employed graphical Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (gLASSO) network to assess the central symptoms of IGD in adolescents. Additionally, directed acyclic graphs (DAG) were used to explore the directed dependence among these symptoms. A total of 953 early adolescents (Mage = 11.66, SD = 1.06) and 968 emerging adults (Mage = 19.21, SD = 1.00), all of whom reported at least one sy

Role models in gaming: Wishful identification and maladaptive daydreaming mediate the association between desire for fame and game engagement.

BACKGROUND: The popularity of video games has considerably increased in recent years, with approximately 3.24 billion players worldwide in 2021. Empirical evidence suggests that the quality of engagement in video games can determine whether a gaming activity is associated with psychological distress (i.e., problematic gaming) or self-enhancing outcomes (i.e., esports career pursuits). This study investigates the role of influential gaming role models and other external factors relating to fame appeal in gamers' different ways of engagement. METHODS: A total of 803 adolescent and adult gamers

Identifying clinical risk factors correlated with addictive features of non-suicidal self-injury among a consecutive psychiatric outpatient sample of adolescents and young adults.

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is an issue primarily of concern in adolescents and young adults. Recent literature suggests that persistent, repetitive, and uncontrollable NSSI can be conceptualized as a behavioral addiction. The study aimed to examine the prevalence of NSSI with addictive features and the association of this prevalence with demographic and clinical variables using a cross-sectional and case-control design. A total of 548 outpatients (12 to 22 years old) meeting the criteria for NSSI disorder of DSM-5 were enrolled and completed clinical interviews by 4 psychiatrists. NSSI wi

The relationships between negative emotions and latent classes of smartphone addiction.

The relationships between negative emotions and smartphone addiction has been tested through the literature. However, most of the studies applied variable-centered approaches. The heterogeneity of smartphone addiction severity has not been examined for the associations with negative emotion variables. The purposes of the present study is to explore the latent classes of smartphone addiction and analyze the relationships between depression, social anxiety and boredom and these subgroups. The Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Version (SAS-SV) and three negative emotion scales were employed to con
