Kaposiform hemangioma of jejunum in a newborn: A case report and review of literature.

INTRODUCTION: Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma is a rare tumor, of vascular origin, which predominates in childhood. Although it is frequentl … on in newborns opens the possibility of a wide range of possible diagnoses, such as the presence of intestinal atresia. Kaposiform intestinal hemangioma is an uncommon cause in these clinical manifestations, but it should be included in the differential diagnosis.

Detection of an Infant's Duodenal Atresia by Milk Scan.

Duodenal membranous atresia is a rare congenital disease. Here, we present a case of 6-month-old girl referred to us for repeated vomiting since birth. Milk scan was performed, and the results revealed a typical "double-bubble" sign. In addition, only very little activity was shown in the small intestine even at the end of the scintigraphy. These results led to the diagnosis of duodenal atresia, which was subsequently confirmed by gastroenterography and laparotomy. Our case demonstrated the potential value of milk scan in the diagnosis of this congenital disorder.

Surgical management of colon atresia.

Colon atresia is a rare cause of intestinal obstruction in the neonate and requires early diagnosis and prompt surgical treatment. It is impossible in the neonate to differentiate colon atresia from other forms of obstruction at the time of initial presentation. The diagnosis is confirmed roentgenographically, including views of the abdomen and contrast barium enema series. Lesions proximal to the splenic flexure are treated with initial resection of the atretic segment and a primary anastomosis. Those lesions distal to the splentic flexure are managed initally with a diverting loop colostomy

Colonic atresia and Hirschsprung's disease in a neonate: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Colonic atresia is a rare form of intestinal atresia that can be encountered in neonates. Although uncommon, other disease processes can be found simultaneously including malrotation, additional atresias, gastroschisis, and Hirschsprung's disease. CASE PRESENTATION: A 2-day-old female neonate with known maternal polysubstance use was found to have colonic atresia on contrast enema after emesis and failure to pass meconium. Abdominal exploration revealed a blind ending cecum with evidence of ischemia along with an atretic transverse colon. An ileocecectomy with end ileostomy and …

Malformations of the gut.

Although there are many different malformations of the intestine, clinically they can present similarly. In addition, even conditions that are not congenital may be difficult to differentiate. An approach that employs a detailed history, physical examination, and use of appropriate radiologic studies is important. Some malformations can have life-threatening consequences if diagnosis is delayed; therefore, expediency is imperative.

Successful staged repair of pulmonary atresia, ventricular septal defect, and major aortopulmonary collateral arteries in an extremely low birth weight infant.

An extremely low birth weight infant (810 g) was born with pulmonary atresia, ventricular septal defect, and major aortopulmonary collateral arteries accompanied by pulmonary overcirculation, which eventually resulted in intestinal hypoperfusion and focal intestinal perforation from the very early stage of life. Based on the echographic findings, we performed banding operations twice to regulate the pulmonary blood flow on day 2 and day 9. At 6 months of age, a definitive repair simultaneous with unifocalization of major aortopulmonary collateral arteries was performed. At 1 year of age, the r

Functional and metabolic evaluation of colon replacement of the esophagus in children.

Thirteen children with esophageal replacement with colon interposition have been followed at the University of Florida Medical Center between 1962 and 1976. Eight of these patients were evaluated with a detailed functional and metabolic protocol, four requiring colon interposition for esophageal atresia and four for esophageal strictures. Growth was noted to be somewhat delayed in the patients with esophageal atresia, especially those with associated congenital anomalies. Otherwise, excellent functional results were obtained. Significant anemia with depressed serum iron concentrations was note

Intestinal complications after antenatal fetoscopic laser ablation in twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome.

Twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) occurs in 9% of monochorionic twin pregnancies. An imbalanced blood flow across placental vascular communications produces a hypovolemic condition in the donor fetus and hypervolemia in the recipient fetus, leading to a variety of postnatal complications. We report 3 cases of intestinal injury in TTTS after fetoscopic laser ablation of the communicating vessels: 2 cases of intestinal atresia, and 1 case of necrotizing enterocolitis of 1 twin. Intestinal ischemic diseases have been reported after prenatal laser treatment in TTTS; with this report, we add…

High-grade congenital esophageal stenosis owing to a membranous diaphragm with tracheoesophageal fistula.

Gross E-type congenital esophageal atresia associated with congenital esophageal stenosis is extremely rare. In a male infant born at 36 weeks of gestation, bubbly vomiting was noted after birth. X-ray films of the chest and abdomen showed coil-up sign of the nasogastric tube and gas in the stomach and small intestines were recognized, so gross C-type esophageal atresia was suspected and surgery was performed on the first day of life. Surgery revealed the presence of a tracheoesophageal fistula in the upper esophagus and membranous stenosis on the distal side.

The association of syndromic paucity of the interlobular bile ducts and congenital mechanical obstruction of the small intestine.

Three patients with congenital mechanical intestinal obstruction and features of syndromic paucity of the interlobular bile ducts (SPILBD) are presented. Two of them have siblings with syndromic paucity of the interlobular bile ducts. Two patients had jejunoileal atresia, while the other had a meconium plug with intestinal perforation. All subjects underwent surgery for intestinal obstruction within the first 24 h of life. Progressive disappearance of the bile ductules was observed in one case. We believe that an insult such as vascular insufficiency to both bile ductal epithelium and the smal

Epidermolysis bullosa, pyloric atresia, aplasia cutis congenita: histopathological delineation of an autosomal recessive disease.

The simultaneous appearance of epidermolysis bullosa and pyloric atresia (EB-PA) is recognized as an autosomal recessive disease; however, the coappearance of EB-PA and aplasia cutis congenita (ACC) has not been delineated as a defined entity. The aim of this study was to analyze clinically and histopathologically eight cases with EB-PA-ACC belonging to an extended Bedouin family to gain insight into the cause and pathophysiology of the disease. All affected infants were found to have mixed skin lesions, including blisters and patchy lack of skin. Almost all of them (seven of eight) also had i

Stapled anastomoses of the gastrointestinal tract, commonplace in adults and older children, are rarely performed in newborns because of the … e intestinal anastomoses included ileostomy closure after perforated necrotizing enterocolitis (3), intestinal atresia (1), distal ileal volvulus (1), left colon mesenteric cyst (1), and biliary atresia (1). There were no deaths or anastomotic leaks. Nasogastric decompression was discontinued at a mean of 6 days (range, 3 to 11 days), and oral feedings were begun at …

Adriamycin produces a reproducible teratogenic model of gastrointestinal atresia in the mouse.

Gastrointestinal atresia is a major cause of bowel obstruction in the newborn. Experimental models and clinical observations have demonstrated the heterogeneous nature of its pathogenesis. A proportion is due to late intra-uterine vascular insults and some are genetic in nature. Epidemiological studies have found gastrointestinal atresia to occur with other birth defects, in particular VACTERL anomalies, suggesting that a subset of cases may result from an early disturbance to intestinal morphogenesis. Adriamycin is teratogenic in rats, producing gastrointestinal atresia and VACTERL anomalies.…

Fatal Course of a Male Newborn with Double Duodenal Atresia.

Multiple point duodenal atresia is an extremely rare condition with atretic segments in either two or three sites of the duodenum. We report a newborn male patient who presented to our institution with bilious vomiting, nonpassage of meconium, mild abdominal distension, and a palpable epigastric abdominal mass ∼1 × 1 cm. A faint double bubble was found on abdominal X-ray. On exploratory laparotomy, a duodenal cyst due to double duodenal atresia was found and a typical diamond-shaped duodeno-duodenostomy was created. A postoperative contrast study revealed passage of the contrast media into dis

Near-total jejunoileal atresia with exteriorized cecum and gangrenous appendix associated with gastroschisis: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Gastroschisis is a congenital abdominal wall defect. The complex form, especially with extensive jejunoileal atresia, is rare and carries high morbidity. Reports of near-total atresia with a preserved colon are scarce, particularly in resource-limited settings. CASE PRESENTATION: A 5-day-old male presented with bilious vomiting and failure to pass meconium. Operative findings revealed gastroschisis with an exteriorized, gangrenous cecum and appendix, near-total jejunoileal atresia (only 20 cm of proximal small bowel remaining), malrotation, and a hypoplastic colon. A primary spa
