Colonization and adhesion are the key steps for Vibrio parahaemolyticus to infect human body and cause seafood poisoning. However, at present, there is a lack of systematic review on the regulation of virulence factors expression during the intestinal colonization of V. parahaemolyticus. This review aims to describe the virulence factors associated with the colonization and adhesion of V. parahaemolyticus (multivalent adhesion molecule 7, enolase secretion, use of flagella, biofilm formation, and the action of secretion systems) and focuses on the aspects that affect these processes in V. para

In mammalian intestine, a number of secretagogues have been shown to work through either cyclic nucleotide or calcium mediated pathways to elicit ion secretion. Because excessive intestinal electrolyte and fluid secretion is central to the pathogenesis of a variety of diarrheal disorders, understanding of these processes is essential to the development of future clinical treatments. In the current study, the effects of serotonin (5HT), histamine, and carbachol on intestinal ion transport were examined in in vitro preparations of rabbit ileum. All three agonists induced a rapid and transient in

A multichannel tube with two occluding balloons was developed for measurements of the secretion of different endogenous substances into a defined segment of the small intestine. The tube was inserted under fluoroscopic guidance with the aid of a guide wire and was in position in the proximal jejunum after 45-90 min. The overall success rate of the complete procedure was 90%. The system prevented contamination of the perfusate from gastric and pancreatic secretion. Major dilution of the intestinal secretion was avoided due to high recovery of the perfusion fluid. The jejunal secretion rates of

As a leading cause of death in children under 5 years old, secretory diarrheas including cholera are characterized by excessive intestinal fluid secretion driven by enterotoxin-induced cAMP-dependent intestinal chloride transport. This study aimed to identify fungal bioactive metabolites possessing anti-secretory effects against cAMP-dependent chloride secretion in intestinal epithelial cells. Using electrophysiological analyses in human intestinal epithelial (T84) cells, five fungus-derived statin derivatives including α,β-dehydrolovastatin (DHLV), α,β-dehydrodihydromonacolin K, lovastatin, m

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a central nervous system (CNS) disease that can cause sensory and motor impairment below the level of injury. Currently, the treatment scheme for SCI mainly focuses on secondary injury and complications. Recent studies have shown that SCI leads to an imbalance of intestinal microbiota and the imbalance is also associated with complications after SCI, possibly through the microbial-brain-gut axis. Melatonin is secreted in many parts of the body including pineal gland and gut, effectively protecting the spinal cord from secondary damage. The secretion of melatonin is

This study aimed to examine the effects of ethanol-soluble components (Es) in soybean meal (SBM) on gut content transit, bile acid (BA) and pancreatic digestive enzyme secretions, nutrient apparent digestibility coefficients (ADC), liver and intestinal morphologies, and growth performance of pompano (Trachinotus blochii). The SBM was extracted with aqueous ethanol, then the supernatant and residue were separated and dried to produce ethanol-extracted SBM (ESBM) and the Es. Four experimental diets were formulated with fish meal (FM), ESBM and SBM as main dietary protein sources. The diets were

The two principal antibody classes present in saliva are secretory IgA (SIgA) and IgG; the former is produced as dimeric IgA by local plasma cells (PCs) in the stroma of salivary glands and is transported through secretory epithelia by the polymeric Ig receptor (pIgR), also named membrane secretory component (SC). Most IgG in saliva is derived from the blood circulation by passive leakage mainly via gingival crevicular epithelium, although some may be locally produced in the gingiva or salivary glands. Gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) and nasopharynx-associated lymphoid tissue (NALT) do n

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Mice deficient of the cystic fibrosis (CF) transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) exhibit severe intestinal lesions, particularly mucous overproduction/secretion and accumulation, which is similar to meconium ileus in CF patients. Moreover, severity of the intestinal disease in CF mice is strongly influenced by genetic modifiers, and CFTR deficiency affects the expression of multiple secondary genes that may impact on the phenotype. The murine orthologue of human hCLCA1 (mCLCA3) is expressed by goblet cells and implicated in their normal function, particularly with mucus

After massive resection of the small intestine the remnant mucosa has an important capacity to enlarge the absorptive surface for the digestion, hydrolysis and absorption of nutrients. This intestinal adaptation is achieved by the interaction of various factors. Oral nutrients together with pancreatic biliary secretions stimulate the mucosa to become hyperplastic. Secondary to these luminal factors hormones play an important role in the adaptive process. Among the hormones, enteroglucagon is the most important growth promoting agent together with other growth factors such as epidermal growth f

In three dogs with denervated Heidenhain pouches, ingestion of cooked beef liver caused increased acid output and gastrin secretion. After antrectomy and gastrojejunal anastomosis, ingestion of the liver did not increase serum gastrin levels throughout the experiment. Acid output, however, although markedly reduced, was elevated over basal levels during the last three hours of the four-hour experiment. Total abdominal vagotomy did not alter gastrin secretion but further inhibited acid output in response to the test meal. These results indicate that in the dog intestinal gastrin is not released

Light plays a crucial role as an environmental factor, greatly affecting chick behavior, production performance and health. Melatonin, an essential marker of photoelectric signaling, plays a role in regulating various physiological functions in broilers, such as gut health. However, whether monochromatic light can mediate melatonin secretion to regulate intestinal function and its regulatory mechanism are not known. In the present study, we showed that monochromatic green light significantly enhanced the mucosal barrier function of the broiler cecum, including the up-regulation of goblet cells

The exocrine pancreas is regulated by various hormonal factors derived from the gut through hormone-hormonal and neurohormonal interactions. Physiologic stimuli entering the upper small intestine elicit the release of intestinal hormones and activate sensory reflex mechanisms from the intestinal mucosa to stimulate or inhibit exocrine pancreatic secretion. In addition, the endocrine pancreas, intrapancreatic nerves, and some extrapancreatic neural pathways, with or without mediation by the vagus nerve, are known to participate in regulation of exocrine pancreatic secretion. It has been establi

The glucose-dependent secretion of the insulinotropic hormone glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is a critical step in the regulation of glucose homeostasis. Two molecular mechanisms have separately been suggested as the primary mediator of intestinal glucose-stimulated GLP-1 secretion (GSGS): one is a metabotropic mechanism requiring the sweet taste receptor type 2 (T1R2) + type 3 (T1R3) while the second is a metabolic mechanism requiring ATP-sensitive K(+) (K(ATP)) channels. By quantifying sugar-stimulated hormone secretion in receptor knockout mice and in rats receiving Roux-en-Y gastric bypas

Infections with F4(+) enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) causes severe diarrhoea in piglets, resulting in morbidity and mortality. F4 fimbriae are the key virulence factors mediating the attachment of F4(+) ETEC to the intestinal epithelium. Intestinal epithelial cells (IEC) are recently being recognized as important regulators of the intestinal immune system through the secretion of cytokines, however, data on how F4(+) ETEC affect this cytokine secretion are scarce. By using ETEC strains expressing either polymeric, monomeric or F4 fimbriae with a reduced polymeric stability, we demonst

The most common and significant cause of disturbances in the normal intestinal microflora is the administration of antimicrobial agents. The microflora can be influenced by antimicrobial agents because of incomplete absorption of any orally administered antimicrobial agent, secretion of an antimicrobial agent in the bile, or secretion from the intestinal mucosa. Administration of these agents may seriously disturb the balance of the normal intestinal microflora. This disturbance can cause bacterial overgrowth and emergence of resistant microorganisms which may lead to serious infections and al

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is released from enteroendocrine cells (L cells) in response to food ingestion. The mechanism by which dietary peptides stimulate GLP-1 secretion in the gut is unknown. In the present study, we found that a hydrolysate prepared from zein, a major corn protein [zein hydrolysate (ZeinH)], strongly stimulates GLP-1 secretion in enteroendocrine GLUTag cells. Stimulatory mechanisms of GLP-1 secretion induced by ZeinH were investigated in the rat small intestine under anesthesia. Blood was collected through a portal catheter before and after ZeinH administration into

Intestinal motility is a function of the enteric nervous system involving secretion of the excitatory neurotransmitter acetylcholine (ACh). Although gut commensal bacteria are key regulators of intestinal physiology, the molecular mechanisms underlying microbial influence on intestinal peristalsis and constipation remain unclear. Here we report a link between microbial nitrogen metabolism and intestinal motility regulation via ammonia production. We observed compensatory elevation of intestinal ammonia levels and urease activity in mouse models of intestinal dysmotility, induced by ACh deficie
