Intestinal atresia.

Intestinal atresia accounts for about one third of all cases of neonatal intestinal obstruction. The survival rate has improved to 90% in most of the series with the operative mortality being < 1%. The survival rate improves with distal atresias. An increased mortality is observed in multiple atresias (57%), apple peel atresia (71%), and when atresia is associated with meconium ileus (65%), meconium peritonitis (50%) and gastroschisis (66%). Although appearance of echogenic bowel on prenatal ultrasonography is suggestive of GI, it is confirmed in only 27% cases. Prenatal ultrasonography is mor

Intestinal amebae.

Although the intestinal amebae that infect humans are not thought of as classic agents of food-borne disease, food plays an important role in the transmission of these protozoa. This is particularly true for areas of the world where the organisms are endemic. Transmission of most intestinal protozoa occurs by the fecal-oral route via contaminated food or water. Among the four genera of amebae that infect man, only Entamoeba histolytica and Blastocystis hominis are causes of disease. This article focuses on E. histolytica because of the organism's medical and economic impact on humans. In addit

[Intestinal pneumatosis].

Intestinal pneumatosis is an infrequent disease of difficult clinical and radiologic diagnosis. It may be accompanied by pneumoperitoneum in up to 30% of the cases leading to differential diagnosis with pictures of visceral perforation. We herein present 4 cases of intestinal pneumatosis in whom pneumoperitoneum was associated in 3 patients. Diagnosis was intraoperative in 2 patients submitted to emergency surgery because of an associated acute gastrointestinal event (intestinal volvulus and acute cholecystitis). The other 2 cases were diagnosed by computerized tomography and colonoscopy, resp

Intestinal transplantation.

In contrast to other solid organ transplantations slow progress has been seen in introducing intestinal transplantation (IT) from an experimental level to clinical practice. In nine years less than 200 transplantations have been performed worldwide with a three-years, survival of approximately 40%. The main problem of IT is immunological. Large amounts of lymphatic tissues transplanted along with the intestinal graft increase the risk of acute rejection and necessitate high doses of immunosuppressive regimens liable of inducing serious side-effects. The immunocompromized recipient is vulnerabl

Malrotation of the intestine.

Malrotation of the intestinal tract is a product of a well defined aberrant embryology. Because the consequences of malrotation associated with a midgut volvulus may be catastrophic, an understanding of the anatomy, diagnostic criteria, and appropriate therapy for this putative emergency illness is imperative. This report summarizes a recent 18-month experience with this diagnosis and contrasts this experience with that in the published literature. More than half (14/22) of the patients presented during the first month of life, and all had vomiting, which in most cases was bilious. The barium

Intestinal capillariasis.

What started out as an isolated report of an unknown intestinal parasitic disease has emerged as another disease of worldwide significance. Capillaria philippinensis was found in the intestines of a Filipino who suffered from an intractable diarrhoea and died in 1963. A few years later epidemics of intestinal cappillariasis erupted and spread to many parts of the Philippines. Thailand was also found to be endemic for the disease and in recent years, a few case reports have come from Japan, Iran and Egypt too. Since small freshwater and brackish water fish are considered to be the natural inter…

Intestinal obstruction.

Acute intestinal obstruction is an emergency that frequently requires operative intervention, either immediately or within several days. Because of the difficulty in distinguishing strangulation obstruction from simple obstruction, a philosophy of operating on all patients with intestinal obstruction has been advocated by many physicians. On the other hand, the approach of attempting tube decompression on most patients rather than immediate operation has also been advocated. Both of these approaches are extreme and somewhat simplistic in dealing with a problem that often is complex. Fluid and

Intestinal myiasis.

With international travel increasing to more rural areas, physicians must be aware of the accidental ingestion of fly ova from contaminated food, which results in the fecal passage of these nondigestible eggs. The purpose of this report is to review this entity.

Intestinal obstruction.

One hundred severty-one cases of mechanical intestinal obstruction were studied. One hundred fifteen had small bowel obstruction and fifty-six had large bowel obstruction. Adhesion (32.8 per cent), hernia (21.6 per cent), and neoplasm (18.1 per cent) were the cause of obstruction in more than 70 per cent of all cases. More than 40 per cent of patients were older than 60 years and the average age was 52.7. The numbers of males and females were approximately equal. There were twice as many whites as blacks, and the mortality rate was higher among blacks. The overall uncorrected mortality rate wa
