Substituting food restriction by resistance training prevents liver and body fat regain in ovariectomized rats.

OBJECTIVE: Fat mass gain and regain following weight loss are major concerns and may be even more critical after menopause. The present stud … g the food restriction program over a 5-week period resulted in a partial regain in body weight and intra-abdominal fat pad weight (p < 0.05), and in an almost complete regain in liver TAG compared to normally fed Ovx rats. On the other hand, no significant increases in these variables were noted when the food restriction was replaced by resistance training over the …

Preventing diabetes--applying pathophysiological and epidemiological evidence.

This is a review of research carried out in Japanese Americans that points towards possible approaches to prevention of type 2 diabetes mell … he abnormalities that characterize the metabolic syndrome play a significant role. Due to increased intra-abdominal fat deposition, Japanese Americans were likely to be 'metabolically obese' despite relatively normal BMI. A diet higher in animal fat and lower levels of physical activity were risk factors leading to increased intra-abdominal fat deposition, insulin re …

Abdominal Subcutaneous Fat Thickness Is a Useful Predictor for Lower Urinary Tract Dysfunction After Robot-Assisted Radical Prostatectomy.

OBJECTIVE: Obesity is known to be an important patient-related factor in predicting lower urinary tract dysfunction (LUTD) after robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP). The present study aimed to investigate the usefulness of subcutaneous and visceral fat thickness as measures of obesity in predicting LUTD after RARP. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 536 patients who had undergone RARP at our institution were included in the study. We measured the abdominal subcutaneous fat thickness (SCFT) and periprostatic fat thickness (PPFT) on preoperative magnetic resonance imaging as indicators o

Sex- and age-specific associations between abdominal fat and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: a prospective cohort study.

Obesity is closely related to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Although sex differences in body fat distribution have been well demonstrated, little is known about the sex-specific associations between adipose tissue and the development of NAFLD. Using community-based cohort data, we evaluated the associations between magnetic resonance imaging quantified areas of abdominal adipose tissue, including visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT), and incident NAFLD in 2830 participants (1205 males and 1625 females) aged 55-70 years. During a 4.6-year median follo

Metabolomics profiling of visceral and abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue in colorectal cancer patients: results from the ColoCare study.

PURPOSE: Underlying mechanisms of the relationship between body fatness and colorectal cancer remain unclear. This study investigated associations of circulating metabolites with visceral (VFA), abdominal subcutaneous (SFA), and total fat area (TFA) in colorectal cancer patients. METHODS: Pre-surgery plasma samples from 212 patients (stage I-IV) from the ColoCare Study were used to perform targeted metabolomics. VFA, SFA, and TFA were quantified by computed tomography scans. Partial correlation and linear regression analyses of VFA, SFA, and TFA with metabolites were computed and corrected fo

Central Obesity and Visceral Adipose Tissue Are Not Associated With Incident Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease Events in Older Men.

Background Visceral adipose tissue ( VAT ) and other measures of central obesity predict incident atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease ( ASCVD ) events in middle-aged individuals, but these associations are less certain in older individuals age 70 years and older. Our objective was to estimate the associations of VAT and the android-gynoid fat mass ratio, another measure of central obesity, with incident ASCVD events among a large cohort of older men. Methods and Results Two thousand eight hundred ninety-nine men (mean [ SD ] age 76.3 [5.5] years) enrolled in the Outcomes of Sleep Disorders

Quantitative Assessment of Visceral Obesity and Postoperative Colon Cancer Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Quantitative computed tomography (CT) assessment of visceral adiposity may be superior to body mass index (BMI) as a predictor of surgical morbidity. We sought to examine the association of CT measures of obesity and BMI with short-term postoperative outcomes in colon cancer patients. METHODS: In this retrospective study, 110 patients treated with colectomy for stage I-III colon cancer were classified as obese or non-obese by preoperative CT-based measures of adiposity or BMI [obese: BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2, visceral fat area (VFA) to subcutaneous fat area ratio (V/S) ≥0.4, and VFA > 100 c

Gender differences in GH response to GHRH+ARG in lipodystrophic patients with HIV: a key role for body fat distribution.

OBJECTIVE: Gender influence on GH secretion in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients is poorly known. DESIGN AND METHODS: To determine the effect of gender, we compared GH response to GH-releasing hormone plus arginine (GHRH+Arg), and body composition in 103 men and 97 women with HIV and lipodystrophy. The main outcomes were IGF1, basal GH, GH peak and area under the curve (AUC) after GHRH+Arg, body composition, visceral adipose tissue (VAT), and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT). RESULTS: Men had lower GH peak and AUC than women (P<0.001). Of the study population, 21% of wome

Tracheobronchial FDG uptake in primary amyloidosis detected by PET/CT.

Tracheobronchial amyloidosis is a rare manifestation of the disease and has never been described with FDG PET/CT. In this study, we report a case of a 70-year-old man with increasing dyspnea, a right pleural effusion, a tracheobronchial circumferential wall thickening, and a mediastinal fat infiltration on CT scan. FDG PET/CT revealed intense tracheobronchial uptake associated with mediastinal and intra-abdominal fat uptake. Bronchoscopy and mediastinoscopy with biopsies confirmed the diagnosis of primary amyloidosis and excluded malignancy. FDG PET/CT could be useful for the evaluation of tra…

Association between visceral adiposity indices and retinal microvascular parameters stratified by urinary protein status.

BACKGROUND: Visceral fat accumulation is a well-established risk factor for both cardiovascular and microvascular diseases. The lipid accumulation product (LAP), visceral adiposity index (VAI), and Chinese visceral adiposity index (CVAI) are recognized tools for assessing visceral obesity. Retinal microvascular parameters serve as non-invasive biomarkers of systemic microvascular health, while qualitatively assessed urinary protein is a marker of early renal injury and endothelial dysfunction. Currently, evidence linking visceral obesity indices to retinal microvasculature is limited, and whet

Role of visceral adiposity in the relationship between cardiorespiratory fitness and liver fat in asymptomatic adults.

Excess liver fat (LF) is associated with low cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), low physical activity, and a deteriorated cardiometabolic health profile including increased visceral adipose tissue (VAT). Whether the association between LF and CRF is mediated by visceral adiposity is unknown. We studied the contribution of VAT to the relationship between CRF and LF in asymptomatic women and men. The sample included 320 participants (43% women) who underwent LF quantification by magnetic resonance spectroscopy. VAT was measured by magnetic resonance imaging, CRF using maximal cardiorespiratory exe
