The authors examined the rate and correlates of depressive symptoms among community-dwelling oldest-old citizens in Israel with a sample of about 1,200 Jewish Israelis age 75-94. The estimated national rate of depressive symptoms was 43.5%. Accidents are unexpected events usually producing injury. Many victims of trauma have a history of recurrent accidents. This study is a preliminary effort to verify the hypothesis that accidents may be considered as a recurrent disease in certain families; these children and families belong to a 'high risk group'. Renal osteodystrophy is one of the major complications in patients on long-term hemodialysis. A group of 42 patients on hemodialysis (mean age 42 yr) were investigated in order to assess the prevalence of renal osteodystrophy in Israeli patients. The patients were examined by X-ray, and 66.7% were found to have signs of osteodystrophy. Of 14 patients without signs of bone involvement, 10 had been on treatment less than 1 yr. Bacteriologic data and some clinical and epidemiologic aspects concerning 53 clinical cases associated with Yersinia enterocolitica are described. This is the first published report of human cases of Y. enterocolitica infection in Israel. Seventy-eight isolates of Y. enterocolitica were obtained from stool cultures of these cases, with 94% on SS agar plates.
