The legacy of Mary Main in attachment and developmental research in Israel.

This article examines Mary Main's impact on attachment research in Israel and vice versa, focusing on her contributions: the disorganized attachment classification (D) and the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI). Israeli research spans Jewish and Arab populations, individuals with special needs, and trauma-affected groups, testing the Normativity, Sensitivity, and Competence hypotheses. While confirming traditional findings, some studies revealed deviations, possibly influenced by Israel's unique sociocultural/historical context. Some studies found an overrepresentation of disorganized and ambiva

"A Little Bit of Light Dispels a Lot of Darkness": Online Disclosure of Child Sexual Abuse by Authority Figures in the Ultraorthodox Jewish Community in Israel.

Social media sites such as Facebook have become popular platforms for promoting public awareness of sexual abuse by encouraging user engagement around this issue. There is, therefore, currently emerging research on the functions and implications of social media as a platform for sexual abuse disclosure. However, as yet, no study has examined this phenomenon specifically through a religious-cultural lens. This study explores perceptions of, barriers to, and motives underlying online disclosure of child sexual abuse (CSA) by religious authority figures (RAFs) in ultraorthodox Jewish society in I

"Maybe what happened is actually OK?" Child sexual abuse by authority figures in the ultra-orthodox community in Israel: Survivors' perceptions of their relationships with the perpetrator.

BACKGROUND: Child sexual abuse (CSA) by authority figures in a religious community (AFRCs) has been studied extensively among the Catholic clergy, and to a limited extent among Orthodox Jewish communities in the United States and Australia. However, less attention has been devoted to the phenomenon within the Israeli context. OBJECTIVE: This article examines the perceptions of survivors within the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community in Israel of their relationships with authority figures in the community who sexually abused them. METHODS: 21 in-depth interviews were conducted with men who were a

Immigration of Ethiopians with typhoid fever to Israel: apparent lack of influence on the local population.

The epidemiology of typhoid fever in Western countries may be affected by immigration from developing countries. We studied the immigration of Ethiopian Jews to Israel to find the effects of an influx of many individuals infected with typhoid into an area with a low incidence of the disease. Typhoid fever affected 204 Israelis and 121 (1.1%) of 10,654 Ethiopian immigrants during the period of 1984-1985. Of those Ethiopian cases, 107 occurred during a 3-month period. During the 5 months following that 3-month period, there was no increase in the number of cases of typhoid among Israelis. Althou

[Is your patient a Holocaust survivor?].

This presentation is meant to heighten physicians' awareness of the special needs and strengths of Holocaust survivors. There has been much research on patients of psychiatric clinics, and there is considerable evidence from other sources that Holocaust survivors are a high risk group for mental, as well as other medical problems. A physician who is aware of this is better able to diagnose and treat survivor-patients. Therefore, it is proposed that questions about the Holocaust be routinely included in the taking of personal histories from patients who came from Europe after World War II. 2 ex

Association of DR4 with pemphigus.

HLA typing for the A, B, C, and D locus antigens was performed on 65 patients with pemphigus vulgaris and on 558 controls living in the Los Angeles area. The patients were divided into several categories. These included Jewish and non-Jewish patients, patients with only mucous membrane involvement, only skin or both mucous membrane and skin involvement, and those with a single-episode or recurrent disease. Depending on the highest titer of anti-intercellular cement substance antibody titer, the patients were categorized into those whose titers were 0-80, 160-320, and 640 or greater. A statisti

Biallelic loss-of-function variants in PLD1 cause congenital right-sided cardiac valve defects and neonatal cardiomyopathy.

Congenital heart disease is the most common type of birth defect, accounting for one-third of all congenital anomalies. Using whole-exome sequencing of 2718 patients with congenital heart disease and a search in GeneMatcher, we identified 30 patients from 21 unrelated families of different ancestries with biallelic phospholipase D1 (PLD1) variants who presented predominantly with congenital cardiac valve defects. We also associated recessive PLD1 variants with isolated neonatal cardiomyopathy. Furthermore, we established that p.I668F is a founder variant among Ashkenazi Jews (allele frequency

Socioeconomic status and vaccine coverage during wild-type poliovirus emergence in Israel.

In August 2013, a nationwide vaccination campaign with bivalent oral polio vaccine (bOPV) was initiated after isolation of wild-type poliovirus type 1 (WPV-1) in routine sewage surveillance in Israel. The campaign started in the Southern district and later extended to the entire country. This study examined the association between socioeconomic status (SES), and compliance with bOPV vaccine during the campaign. Nationwide data relating to SES by geographical cluster were correlated with vaccine coverage rates in the same areas. All analyses were conducted separately for Jews and Arabs. Coverag

Incidence and effects of genetic factors on canine impaction in an isolated Jewish population.

INTRODUCTION: The etiology of palatal canine impaction is multifactorial and includes a genetic contribution. The aim of this study was to find the incidence and effects of genetic factors on palatally impacted canines in a genetically isolated community of ultraorthodox Hassidic Jews of Ashkenazi decent. METHODS: For this study, we retrospectively evaluated 1000 charts of Hassidic Jewish patients. Their distribution was 58% female and 42% male, with a mean age of 14 years. RESULTS: From those patients, 49 (4.9%) were determined to have canine impaction. Of these 49, 69.4% had unilateral pal

When the light shed by God is dimmer than the light shed upon God: countertransference illumination of latent religious object representations of a Jewish patient in psychoanalysis.

A report is offered of the psychoanalysis of an emotionally constricted, religiously devout ko'hen, a member of the Jewish priestly class, undertaken with the author, himself a religiously committed Jew. While the analysand brought a great deal of material to his hours and was deeply committed to the analysis, the sessions were emotionally vapid, obsessively repetitious and ruminative. For more than three years, the patient's steadfast production of a plethora of dreams did not much alter the brittle quality of work and the restricted range of the transference. At first, though religious theme

Gynecologic malignancies in Ashkenazi families with the MSH2 A636P founder mutation.

OBJECTIVE: A founder mutation A636P in the MSH2 gene was found to be related to hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer in Ashkenazi Jews. Although the incidence of colorectal cancer in carriers is relatively well established, the frequency of other tumors is less clear. STUDY DESIGN: We studied a consecutive series of 19 carrier families that were cared for by the Clalit Health Studies National Familial Cancer Consultation Service, most of whom were identified through a population-based case-control study of colorectal cancer in northern Israel. RESULTS: Gynecologic cancers, 88% of which

Mucolipidosis type IV in a Turkish boy associated with a novel MCOLN1 mutation.

Mucolipidosis type IV is a rare neurodegenerative lysosomal storage disorder that usually presents during the first year of life with severe mental retardation, delayed motor milestones and corneal opacities. Mucolipidosis IV is caused by mutations in MCOLN1, a gene encoding mucolipin-1 which is responsible for maintaining lysosomal function. The majority of known patients with this disorders are Ashkenazi Jews, and most have a splice IVS3-2 A>G, or a 6.4kb deletion mutation in MCOLN1. Here, we present a Turkish patient who, in addition to the typical neurological and visceral characteristics

Extensive clinical experience: nonclassical 21-hydroxylase deficiency.

CONTEXT: Nonclassical congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) owing to steroid 21-hydroxylase deficiency (NC21OHD) is the most frequent of all autosomal recessive genetic diseases, occurring in one in 100 persons in the heterogeneous New York City population. NC21OHD occurs with increased frequency in certain ethnic groups, such as Ashkenazi Jews, in whom one in 27 express the disease. NC21OHD is underdiagnosed in both male and female patients with hyperandrogenic symptoms because hormonal abnormalities in NC21OHD are only mild to moderate, not severe as in the classical form of CAH. Unlike class
