CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Corneal epithelial healing after refractive surgery is a clinically significant issue, especially for surface ablation procedures, and this can be monitored using optical coherence tomography (OCT).
BACKGROUND: The aim of this work is to investigate the corneal epithelial thickness and irregularity by OCT after transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy (t-PRK) and analyse its correlation with visual and refractive outcomes.
METHODS: Patients aged ≥18 years with myopia, with or without astigmatism, who underwent t-PRK between May 2020 and August 2021 were included. All p

PURPOSE: This study investigated the effect of prophylactic mitomycin C (MMC) on corneal endothelium to inhibit corneal haze formation post transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy (T-PRK).
METHODS: A total of 120 eyes of 60 patients with low, moderate, and high myopia were subjected to T-PRK with intraoperative application of MMC (0.02%) for 30-50s. Patients' files were categorized into three groups according to ablation depths (if ≥100 µm) during T-PRK as follows: (1) Group A - low myopia without MMC, (2) Group B - low myopia with MMC, and (3) Group C - moderate/high myopia with MMC. PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy, predictability, and safety of combined corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL), intracorneal ring segment (ICRS) implantation, and superficial phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) in patients with keratoconus.
METHODS: Fifty-five eyes received ICRS implantation, followed by CXL and PTK combination treatment. Patients were followed up for 6 months. Primary outcomes included Logarithm of the Minimum Angle of Resolution (LogMAR) uncorrected distance VA (UDVA) and corrected distance VA (CDVA), sphere, cylinder, mean spherical equivalent, index of surface variance, in

PURPOSE: To investigate the association between preoperative dry eye symptoms on postoperative pain and discomfort after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK).
METHODS: A retrospective case series of 151 consecutive patients, who underwent myopic PRK in both eyes between 5/2016 and 5/2017. Patients with positive dry eye disease (DED) signs on clinical examination or with known DED were excluded. Patients underwent a subjective evaluation for dry eye symptoms using ocular surface disease index (OSDI) and modified standard patient evaluation of eye dryness (SPEED) questionnaires. PURPOSE: To investigate how corneal aberrations change after phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) for subepithelial infiltrates after adenoviral keratoconjunctivitis.
METHODS: The records of patients who underwent transepithelial PTK for subepithelial infiltrates were retrospectively reviewed. Preoperative best-corrected visual acuity (VA) and the results of slit-lamp biomicroscopy examinations were recorded. The PTK procedure was performed under topical anesthesia with an Amaris excimer laser. Patients' manifest refraction values, topographical examination results, and corneal aberrations befo

PURPOSE: To evaluate the objective and subjective outcome after phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) on recurrent corneal erosions (Hamburg protocol).
METHODS: For the standardized PTK according to Hamburg protocol a manual abrasio corneae performed with 20 % alcohol is followed by an excimer ablation depth of ≥15 μm (group1 15 μm; group 2 > 15 μm ablation depth) and 7 mm optical zone. All patients (N = 48) were invited for follow-up examinations and the evaluation of changes concerning subjective symptoms.
RESULTS: A significantly reduced subjective impairment of night vision, significantly l

We prospectively compared visual and refractive outcomes in patients with high myopia and myopic astigmatism after small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) and photorefractive keratetctomy (PRK) with mitomycin C. Sixty-six eyes of 33 patients (mean age, 29.7 ± 5.6 years) were included (SMILE: 34 eyes, PRK 32 eyes). Preoperatively, no significant difference was noted in manifest spherical equivalent (p = 0.326), manifest sphere (p = 0.277), and manifest cylinder (p = 0.625) between both groups. At 1 month, there were significant differences in logMAR uncorrected distance visual acuity, effic

OBJECTIVE: To describe the use of transepithelial phototherapeutic keratecomy for the long-term treatment of post-laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) flap macrostriae.
METHOD: We present the case of a 22 year old male with visual loss in the left eye due to chronic flap macrostriae that was treated with transepithelial PTK.
RESULTS: Striae and haze were no longer visible, with a significant improvement of best corrected visual acuity. Refraction in the third month was +9.75-4.00×170°. A phakic intraocular lens was implanted one year later with an uncorrected visual acuity of 0.8.

PURPOSE: To evaluate epithelial healing time, postoperative pain, corneal haze, and visual and refractive outcomes following the application of cultured sheets of human allogeneic epidermal keratinocyte (CEAK) onlays on the photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) -ablated corneal surface as dressing material.
METHODS: In total, 204 eyes from 103 patients with myopia or myopic astigmatism were prospectively evaluated for 6 months after PRK. The ablated cornea was dressed in three different ways. Specifically, CEAK onlays were placed in 80 eyes (CEAK group), CEAK with amniotic membrane (AM) strips in

PURPOSE: Photorefractive keratectomy has the potential to cause transient corneal haze. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between transient corneal haze as measured by an objective means and high and low contrast visual performance.
METHODS: In a prospective study, 44 eyes of 28 patients were examined preoperatively and at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after photorefractive keratectomy. Five laser in situ keratomileusis and two intrastromal corneal ring segments (Intacs [KeraVision, Fremont, CA]) were included for comparison, because these procedures are not expected to caus

TOPIC: The aim of this study was to assess the meta-analysis of the studies comparing transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy (transPRK) with classic photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) (mechanical or alcohol-assisted).
CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Although PRK is a well-established procedure, transPRK, a newer, minimally invasive technique may reduce surgery time and improve patient outcomes. Comparing these techniques helps optimize surgical choices.
METHODS: Relevant studies were collected from PubMed and were included if they met the following criteria: comparison of transPRK and PRK in efficac
