The anoxic metabolism of cholesterol was studied in the denitrifying bacterium Sterolibacterium denitrificans, which was grown with cholesterol and nitrate. Cholest-4-en-3-one was identified before as the product of cholesterol dehydrogenase/isomerase, the first enzyme of the pathway. The postulated second enzyme, cholest-4-en-3-one-Delta(1)-dehydrogenase, was partially purified, and its N-terminal amino acid sequence and tryptic peptide sequences were determined. Immunity to tuberculosis (TB) requires a Th1 pattern of cytokine release, dominated by interleukin-2 (IL-2) and interferon gamma (IFN gamma). The following study tested the hypothesis that women with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) related to childhood sexual abuse would display elevated norepinephrine-to-cortisol ratios similar to that found in male combat veterans diagnosed with PTSD. Patients with moderate to severe hirsutism presenting over an 18-month period to an endocrine clinic were assessed by clinical evaluation and hormone measurements. This study was undertaken to determine whether serum dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) assays could be used in lieu of urinary 17-ketosteroid (17-KS) determinations.
