OBJECTIVES: Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XGP) is an uncommon inflammation of the renal parenchyma that occurs in the presence of chronic obstruction and suppuration. In this retrospective study, a review of the features of 41 recent cases of XGP is presented and compared with current published data.
METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated the clinical, surgical, and radiologic features of 41 cases of XGP and compared the data of this Brazilian population with that from current published reports.
RESULTS: XGP was diagnosed in 19.2% of all nephrectomies performed for pyelonephritis during

The excretory urograms of 70 Nigerian women presenting to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital with obstetric vesicovaginal fistula over a 7-year period are analyzed. The common abnormalities are medial deviation of distal ends of ureters (34%); discrete but smooth pseudoprostatic bladder base indentation (33%); and calyceal clubbing of varying degrees (19%). Other abnormalities observed include hydroureters (18%); bladder calculi (7%); bladder wall calcification (3%), and unilateral nonfunctioning kidneys (3%).

The anatomy of the kidney collecting system may play a role in the selection of the best method of kidney stone treatment for a specific patient. Also, an analysis of the collecting-system anatomy would indicate the likely effectiveness of each method of treatment. For stones located in the lower pole, the clearance rate after shockwave lithotripsy has been uniformly low relative to that of calculi elsewhere. Some special anatomical findings suggest that retention of what are considered to be 'passable stone fragments' (4 mm in diameter or less) in the inferior pole might be a consequence not

UNLABELLED: Spinal cord injury patients may develop proteinuria as a result of glomerulosclerosis due to urosepsis, hydronephrosis, vesicoureteric reflux, and renal calculi. Proteinuria in turn contributes to progression of kidney disease. We report one paraplegic and two tetraplegic patients, who developed recurrent urine infections, urinary calculi, and hydronephrosis. These patients required several urological procedures (nephrostomy, cystoscopy and ureteric stenting, ureteroscopy and lithotripsy, extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy). These patients had not received antimuscarinic drugs n

The authors report an experiment using the cadaver kidney with a fibrin coagulum injected into the pelvis and calices in order to extract multiple calculi. They used a mixture of cryoprecipitated plasma and a combination of thrombin and calcium chloride. This mixture was made up immediately before use, and injected into the pyelocaliceal cavities using a small Foley catheter previously inserted into the renal pelvis. This catheter was used to empty completely the pyelocaliceal cavities of urine immediately before injection. Extraction via a pyelotomy incision was used to withdraw the compact m

Stones in renal caliceal diverticula with no symptom or infection can be managed with surveillance. In other cases, extracorporeal lithotripsy (ESWL) can be the first line treatment for all diverticular stones, whatever their renal location. In case of ESWL failure, the procedure choice depends of the location of the diverticulum. Percutaneous surgery is indicated for lower and posterior diverticula. The puncture must be directly targeted to the stone. Flexible ureteroscopy is indicated for upper and mid, anterior or posterior, diverticula. Laparoscopy can be indicated for anterior, mid and lo

The frequencies of kidney and urinary tract diseases (KUTD) in a defined population are presented. Rates of first hospitalizations with KUTD in the 5-year period, 1971 through 1975, were determined among over 1 million members of the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan (KFHP) of Northern California. Cases were identified from computer-stored ICDA-coded final discharge diagnoses for hospitalizations. Kidney and other urinary tract diseases were final diagnoses in 35.7 first hospitalizations per 10,000 members per year in the period 1971 through 1975. Disease-specific rates were highest for urinary tr

A clinical and roentgenographic analysis of 13 patients with pathologically proved xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (X-P) has demonstrated that many previously accepted truisms associated with this disease may not be valid. As a result of this study it is suggested that X-P: 1. Does have a prominant female distribution. 2. May arise relatively acutely. 3. Can be associated with a well-functioning kidney. 4. May destroy the kidney and collecting system. 5. Does not demonstrate neovascularity. 6. Can be distinguished angiographically from hypernephroma. 7. May be associated with diabetes. Othe

Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is one of the common endocrine disorders, which results clinically in nephrolithiasis, osteoporosis, muscle weakness, cardiac and psychiatric abnormalities even in a mild or asymptomatic disease. Parathyroidectomy (PTX) is the only definitive treatment for PHPT, however, some patients with sporadic PHPT refuse surgery, are medically unfit, or have residual or recurrent disease inaccessible to further surgery. These patients may require intervention for management of symptomatic or moderate to severe hypercalcemia, bone loss or kidney calculi.

Crossed renal ectopia with fusion is a rare congenital kidney anomaly where the kidneys are fused and cross each other. Patients are asymptomatic while some may experience lower abdominal pain, hematuria, fever, urinary tract infection, hypertension, renal failure, and a palpable abdominal mass. It is often discovered incidentally during evaluations for related conditions like renal stones, pyelonephritis, vesico-ureteric reflux, cysts, or malignancy, with renal cell carcinoma being the most common. Diagnosis of crossed-fused renal ectopia can be done through abdominal ultrasonography, retrogr

Primary Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the kidney is rarely reported in the literature. It is usually associated with renal stone, and due to lack of clinical symptoms and radiological diagnostic features, patients often present at the late stages of the disease. We reported a 59-year-old woman presented with a longstanding history of flank pain and hematuria. Imaging techniques revealed enlargement of the right kidney associated with multiple staghorn stones. The patient subsequently underwent right radical nephrectomy, and histopathological examination of the mass revealed well-differentia

A case of mucus-producing papillary adenocarcinoma of the renal pelvis associated with multiple renal calculi in a 16-year-old male is reported. The majority of the tumor cells contained large, round or cone-shaped, vimentin-positive intracytoplasmic inclusions, which exhibited some morphological and immunohistochemical resemblance to inclusions found in malignant rhabdoid tumor of the kidney. An intracytoplasmic accumulation of mucus was also noted in some tumor cells. The patient is free from recurrence and metastasis after a nephrectomy.

OBJECTIVE: To report a patient with sulfadiazine-induced urolithiasis and acute renal failure.
CASE SUMMARY: A patient with AIDS who was being treated with pyrimethamine and sulfadiazine for Toxoplasma encephalitis developed lumbar pain, dysuria, urinary frequency, and hematuria. Acute renal failure was found and numerous crystals of sulfadiazine were seen in the urine. Multiple calculi of up to 2 cm in diameter in both kidneys were noted on ultrasound. The patient was treated with intravenous fluids and alkalinization of the urine with rapid improvement. An intravenous urographic study perfo

BACKGROUND: Vesical calculi refer to stones in the urinary bladder. The causes of bladder stones include bladder outlet obstruction, neurogenic voiding dysfunction, infection, or foreign bodies. Very rarely, these vesical calculi may reach very large sizes and the largest dimension can sometimes reach 13 centimetres.
METHODS: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted from 1ST May 2019 to 31st October, 2019 at Institute of Kidney Diseases, Urology Department, Hayatabad Peshawar. 164 patients with vesical stone were included in study. Ultrasound-KUB was used for diagnosis of vesical

Prophylactic cholecystectomy for asymptomatic cholelithiasis is sometimes required before transplantation. However, there is little indication in the literature that transplant recipients are at any greater risk than individuals in the general population. Between January 1990 and December 1993, 211 renal transplant recipients underwent duplex sonography. All were asymptomatic. Twenty-one had positive findings: gallstones were found in 15 patients (7.11%) and sludge was found in 6 (2.84%). Of gallstone patients, seven (3%) were men and eight (4%) were women. One gallstone patient also had diabe

Being a foreign body, intrauterine coil causes decubitus and inflammation of the adjacent tissues. Long-term carriage of the coil may give rise to endometritis, myometritis, parametritis, salpingo-oophoritis, tubo-ovarian inflammatory infiltrates. These infiltrates invade retroperitoneal pelvic fat and may obstruct pelvic ureters. Ureteral obstruction may bring about ureterohydronephrosis, pyelonephritis and renal calculi. The coil may be also responsible for chronic pyelonephritis. The authors have treated 64 females aged 18-45 years with urological complications due to intrauterine coils whi
