Evaluation of circulating immune cells, analytes, and inflammatory markers in sows affected with postpartum dysgalactia syndrome.

Postpartum dysgalactia syndrome (PDS) is a condition affecting periparturient sows, characterized by a reduction in milk and colostrum synthesis shortly after farrowing. Insufficient milk production results in substantial economic losses due to increased piglet morbidity/mortality and premature sow culling. Since PDS develops within a few days following farrowing, the study objectives were to determine if periparturient immune cell profiles and circulating biomarkers differ in sows affected by PDS. We hypothesized differences in immune cells, circulating analytes, and inflammatory markers woul

[Common problems during lactation and their management].

OBJECTIVE: To present an updated review on common problems associated with breastfeeding and their management. SOURCE OF DATA: A comprehensive bibliographic review on the issue was performed by searching publications from the MEDLINE database and from national and international organizations. Books and some key articles cited in other sources were also selected. SUMMARY OF THE FINDINGS: Several common problems that may arise during the breastfeeding period, such as breast engorgement, plugged milk duct, breast infection and insufficient milk supply, originate from conditions that lead the mo

Successful sustained lactation following postpartum tubal ligation.

This study was undertaken to see whether tubal ligation performed within days postpartum, and associated with a delay in the initiation of breastfeeding, exerts a disruptive influence on successfully establishing lactation among the rural population of northern Thailand. Lactational performance of 12 rural northern Thai mothers was not affected by the delay in reunion of mothers with their babies as a result of postpartum tubal sterilization procedure when compared with a group of 8 other healthy mothers and babies. The volume of breast milk transferred, frequency of breastfeeding and the tota

Enhanced growth of E. coli in whey from sows with agalactia syndrome.

E. coli strains were inoculated into porcine whey samples. Replication rates and the final number of bacteria increased when grown in samples collected from sows affected by the agalactiae syndrome as compared with control samples from healthy ones. The bacteria grew especially well in samples collected on the day of farrowing. The results suggest that milk collected at the very early stages of lactation and from sows affected by agalactia supports growth of E. coli. This might make the mammary glands more sensitive to infections caused by coliform bacteria although the causal relationship rem

Can pharmacologic hyperprolactinemia and breast-suction induce lactation in women with normal menstrual cycles?

Six women--age range 21/24--with regular ovulatory cycles, voluntarily underwent with L-Sulpiride (100 mg/die) from the 5th to the 19th day of the cycle. On the 13th, 14th and 15th day of therapy breast suction by syringe breast-pump was performed on each woman every 6 hours and for 4' from either breast. Milk secretion was poor and showed no noticeable increase in the three days of breast suction. L-Sulpiride-induced hyperprolactinemia combined with nipple stimulation-induced increased PRL secretion failed to stimulate milk secretion at a level comparable with physiologic lactation in puerper

[Perinatal stress in brain programming and pathogenesis of psychoneurological disorders].

We analyzed data from our studies and other author's works concerning the influence of stress stimuli on the development of neuroendocrine and immune systems. The results of our analysis suggest that "immunological stress" induced by viral or bacterial infection, an unhealthy diet, and the mother's behavior during pregnancy and lactation are significant risk factors for the developing offspring. The brain is the key target for these factors. The continuous effect of stress stimuli during critical periods of brain development induces hyperactivity and increased response of hypothalamic-pituitar

Dexfenfluramine in psychotic patients.

Dexfenfluramine (DF) is contraindicated in severe psychiatric disorders and in depression. We used DF in 3 patients with chronic psychosis and severe overeating without changes in psychiatric pharmacotherapy. Two patients had paranoid schizophrenic psychosis with hallucinations, one patient mixed psychosis, beginning with lactation psychosis, and several attacks of hallucinations and depression later. Overeating was removed in all 3 patients without any negative effect on the psychotic state. All patients were able to maintain their body weight. Two patients with poorly controlled diabetes imp
