OBJECTIVE: Given rising concern regarding antibiotic resistance, our objective was to evaluate antibiotic-resistant infections following leech therapy and to characterize the use of prophylactic antibiotics.
METHODS: All reports of adverse events involving hirudotherapy (product code "NRN") were retrieved from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration MAUDE database between 2012 and 2021. Antibiotic resistance was defined by bacterial culture or infection after antibiotic administration.

The aim of this review article is to give an overview of current knowledge on kitesurfing injuries. As part of a prospective study, the overall self-reported injury rate was 7.0 per 1000 h of practice. One fatal accident and 11 severe injuries occurred. The most commonly injured sites were foot and ankle, head, chest, and knee. Contusions, abrasions, and lacerations were amongst the most frequent injuries. None of the athletes suffering a head injury used a helmet; the board had been flung against the head by the elastic board leech in all cases. The most common injury situation was the jump.

The challenges of nasal reconstruction are readily apparent to any surgeon who has undertaken this task. Defects involving multiple subunits of the nose usually require adjacent tissue transferred to the wound typically in the form of a forehead flap or other local flaps. Herein, we describe current thought on the subunit principle and the application of local flaps and grafts in reconstructing larger superficial defects of the nose. Primary attention is paid to analysis and patient counseling.

Avulsion of the ear is relatively uncommon and replantation a technical challenge. A case in which an avulsed ear was successfully replanted using a single arterial anastamosis is described. New data on proteolytic enzyme inhibitors and mechanisms of their interaction with the enzymes are reviewed.
