The Carney complex (CNC) is a rare autosomal dominant genetic complex that is characterised by multiple neoplasms consisting of neuroendocrine and cardiac tumours, with only 750 cases reported worldwide as of 2017. Cardiac tumours, in the context of the CNC, are of unique importance since the leading causes of death in patients with CNC are cardiac. To prevent sudden cardiac death and embolic events, a difficult diagnosis must be made and postdiagnostic screenings must be regular. We present a case of a 52-year-old man, with a medical history of pituitary microadenoma and facial lentiginosis,

We present a rare case of intraoral atypical lentiginous melanocytic lesion affecting a pediatric patient, in which the diagnosis of lentiginous junctional melanocytic nevus with cytologic atypia was favored. The main differential diagnosis is lentiginous melanoma, which is a slowly progressing lesion, affecting mainly older adults, and microscopically presenting lentiginous growth pattern of moderately atypical melanocytes, with focal nesting and pagetoid spread. It is strongly recommended that melanocytic lesions showing features of atypical lentiginous growth pattern should be treated with

BACKGROUND: Laser-induced postinflammatory hyperpigmentation could be a limiting factor for selecting patients appropriate for the use of ruby laser in the treatment of lentigenes, especially in dark-skinned individuals.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and adverse effects of Q-switched ruby laser light (694 nm) on solar lentigines in patients with Fitzpatrick skin type II, III, and IV.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Controlled comparison study in a university-based laser clinic center. Ninety-one solar lentigines in patients with skin type II, III, and IV were enrolled. All patients were followe

Congenital nevi are benign proliferations present at birth that consist of cells normally present in the skin. Many of these lesions are disfiguring and a source of psychosocial impairment. Because of location or extent of the lesion, surgical excision of the nevus may leave a defect without favorable reconstructive options. Laser ablation of such lesions has been used by several clinicians. A review of laser terminology is presented along with a review of nevus of Ota, nevus of Ito, café-au-lait macules, lentigines, and congenital melanocytic nevi. Although good results may be achieved with l

Dermoscopy has been documented to increase the diagnostic accuracy of clinicians evaluating skin tumours, improving their ability to detect … matoscopic characteristics suggestive of malignancy are seborrhoeic keratosis (SK), including solar lentigo, melanoacanthoma, irritated, clonal and regressive SK, angioma (mainly thrombosed angioma and angiokeratoma), dermatofibroma, benign adnexal tumours and naevi (Clark, Spitz, recurrent, combined, sclerosing). The most useful clues to recognize these …

Worldwide melanoma incidence and mortality are increasing (1). Despite the ongoing research, advanced melanoma is still incurable; therefore … . Reflectance confocal microscopy is very helpful in the management of special lesions, like facial lentigo maligna melanoma. This type of lesion is considered to be a real challenge for the dermatologist because of its clinical and morphological features that are similar to other lesions such as solar lentigines and pigmented actinic keratoses. In this c …

The appearance of actinic lentigines mainly found on face, back of the hands, upper back and décolleté is associated with chronic sun exposure. However, there is no study looking at the role of long UVA specifically in the development of actinic lentigines. This study was conducted in 20 Japanese adult women exposed on the upper back area three times per week for 6 weeks to incremental sub-erythemal UVA1 doses (5 J/cm2 at weeks 1 and 2, 10 J/cm2 at weeks 3 and 4 and 15 J/cm2 at weeks 5 and 6). Clinical assessment, performed on day 0 (before any exposure), and on days 14, 28 and 42, included th

BACKGROUND: In this article, we review and discuss the photoprotection behavior of Asians based on the literature, along with a subanalysis … rns of Asian patients consulting dermatologists are pigmentary disorders, especially actinic/senile lentigo, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, melasma, vitiligo, and Hori's nevus. The survey subanalysis of participants from China, Indonesia, and Japan with predominantly Fitzpatrick skin types (FST) II to IV revealed that they are particularly concerned …

OBJECTIVE: A 730 nm picosecond-domain laser was developed to improve the clearance of pigmented lesion and reduce adverse events. This study assessed the safety and efficacy of this system for the clearance of lentigines and explores how the short picosecond pulses interact with tissue via histology.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Twenty subjects with Fitzpatrick skin types II-IV were enrolled in this prospective, IRB-approved study. Four treatments were administered using a 730 nm picosecond-domain laser. Pre- and posttreatment photos were assessed by blinded reviewers at 4- and 12-week follow-up

BACKGROUND: Melanoma risk prediction models could be useful for matching preventive interventions to patients' risk.
OBJECTIVES: To develop and validate a model for incident first-primary cutaneous melanoma using clinically assessed risk factors.
METHODS: We used unconditional logistic regression with backward selection from the Australian Melanoma Family Study (461 cases and 329 controls) in which age, sex and city of recruitment were kept in each step, and we externally validated it using the Leeds Melanoma Case-Control Study (960 cases and 513 controls). Candidate predictors included clin

Nevus depigmentosus is an uncommon hypopigmented macule or patch that is congenital and stable in its relative size and distribution throughout life; it occurs sporadically and may be localized, segmental or, less often, systematized. We report the case of a 17-year-old girl with a segmental achromic nevus of the left leg and a patch on the lower back with late age of onset who developed lentigines after prolonged intense ultraviolet B exposure as a consequence of an incorrect diagnosis of segmental vitiligo.

A 9-year-old girl presented with a 2-year history of pigmented streaks on her second right toenail as well as on her fourth and fifth left toenails. The patient was otherwise asymptomatic with no other physical findings. Owing to parental concern, a biopsy was performed, which revealed numerous bacteria as well as Medlar bodies overlying the nail bed with no evidence of a nevomelanocytic lesion. To our knowledge, this is the first report of Medlar bodies causing pigmented streaks in the toenails.

Histopathology of a macule showed the features of lentigo; in addition, groupings of melanocytes were observed at the dermoepidermal junction. The differential diagnosis of AL includes speckled lentiginous nevus and segmental neurofibromatosis.

Segmental neurofibromatosis (NF) is a usually non-inherited form of NF that is characterized by unilateral neurofibromas and/or café-au-lait spots. In partial unilateral lentiginosis (PUL), apart from unilateral lentigines, café-au-lait spots of different dimensions have been described in some patients without fulfilling the diagnostic criteria for NF. We report on three patients representing the 4th to 6th cases of segmental NF without neurofibromas. The diagnosis resulted from unilateral café-au-lait spots of different sizes in all patients and axillary "freckling" and associated skeletal al
