Lignin-first depolymerization of softwood over a NiCu/TiO2 catalyst for the sustainable production of dihydroconiferyl alcohol.

Reductive catalytic fractionation (RCF) has emerged as a promising biorefinery strategy for lignin valorization. However, the inherent structural complexity of lignin often results in low selectivity toward specific high-value products, limiting the economic viability of this process. Herein, we report a bimetallic NiCu/TiO2 catalyst that enables efficient RCF of Pinus sawdust, achieving exceptionally high selectivity (up to 88.07 %) toward the dihydroconiferyl alcohol (Pol-G). Mechanistic studies reveal that the synergistic effect of the NiCu alloy suppresses the elimination of Cγ-OH group in

Using lignin waste as additives to bitumen for the sustainability of the circular economy: A study of the interaction of mixture components.

The growing role of the circular economy, the shortage of oil, and the expansion of its application areas have led to the search for and use of alternative raw materials that can replace/supplement petroleum products. One direction is the use of lignin, which is produced during cellulose production and can be used as a component/substitute for bitumen binders. Despite significant scientific research in this area, the use of oxidized long-term storage lignin has not been practically studied. Therefore, the purpose of this work was basic research on the interaction between bitumen and lignin, wh

Comparison of lignin degradation and flavor compound formation in roasted tobacco by two Bacillus subtilis strains.

Two strains of Bacillus subtilis designated YY-10 and BY-2, were isolated from the surface of tobacco and found to be capable of significant lignin degradation. The predominant lignin-degrading enzymes produced by these strains were lignin peroxidase (LiP) and manganese peroxidase (MnP), respectively. A notable distinction was observed in the organoleptic evaluation and volatile flavor compounds, as determined by sensory evaluation and GC-MS analysis. The content of volatile flavor compounds, such as geranylacetone, meglumine trienone B, and meglumine trienone C, was found to be significantly

Synergistic Effect of AlCl3 and Glycerol/ChCl in the Conversion and Dissolution of Lignin in Three-Constituent Deep Eutectics.

"Lignin-first" approach has attracted much attention on biomass utilization. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have the advantages of being versatile and tunable, among which three-constituent DES (glycerol/ChCl/AlCl3·6H2O) is found efficient for lignin extraction in biomass fractionation. Herein, how this kind of three-constituent DES affects the fractionation efficiency of lignin is investigated in detail at molecular level. Molecular dynamics simulations indicate that glycerol and ChCl provide strong interaction with the small fragments of lignin. Chloride anion is found to contribute mostly el

The AeMYBs responding to CMCS cooperatively regulate the phenylpropanoid pathway to participate in postharvest lignin biosynthesis of okra.

Lignification is one of the key factors restricting the postharvest storage quality of okra. Analyzing the key factors inducing lignin deposition is beneficial for targeted regulation of the quality deterioration caused by postharvest lignification of okra. The aim of this study is to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of key v-myb avian myeloblastosis viral oncogene homolog (MYB) transcription factors involved in postharvest lignification of okra in response to carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS). Subcellular localization experiments confirmed that AeMYB6, AeMYB315-1, and AeMYB35-2 are all nuclear

Phenolic compounds fingerprints show distinct ligninolytic bacteria behaviours during technical lignins conversion.

Lignins, one of the main components of plant cell wall, and by-products of certain industries (paper and wood industries,…) are a renewable source of aromatic molecules. They can be degraded and transformed by microbial and enzymatic processes known to be respectful of the environment. Biological valorization of lignins remains challenging as biocatalysts are not sufficiently effective and efficient. Moreover, the chemical complexity and heterogeneity of lignins are a barrier to their use. Understanding the microbial behaviour on lignins by fingerprinting their efficient transformation could l

The impact of green and organic solvent-based lignin fractionation on polylactic acid biomaterial properties and biocompatibility.

Biomass (cardoon)-derived lignin was fractionated using three solvents, gamma-valerolactone (GVL), acetone, and ethanol (EtOH), and incorporated into polylactic acid (PLA) with 1, 3, and 5 wt% of lignin developing biocomposites via solvent casting. The organosolv fractionation and lignin extraction process enabled the selective separation of lignin, with the choice of solvent significantly influencing lignin particle morphology. Scanning electron microscopy revealed GVL promoted particle nucleation through gradual coalescence, acetone led to rapid solidification with a mixture of large and sma

Synthesis of ZIF-67 composite lignin hydrogel and its catalytic degradation of naphthalene by PMS in wastewater.

The incorporation of ZIF-67 into hydrogels for wastewater pollutant remediation has been widely studied, but the synthesis often requires organic solvents such as methanol or ethanol, which can result in the generation of toxic liquid waste. In this study, a novel hydrogel (ZIF-67@SL) was synthesized by integrating ZIF-67 into a dual-network system of sodium lignosulfonate (SL) and acrylamide (AM) using an in situ precipitation method in water. The material was characterized by XRD, FTIR, XPS, SEM, TEM, BET, and TGA analyses. ZIF-67@SL was used to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for degrading

Dual-functionalized lignin as a sustainable modifier for high-performance phenol-formaldehyde adhesives in plywood production.

Biopolymers derived from natural sources are sustainable, non-toxic, and biodegradable, making them attractive alternatives to fossil-based polymers. Among these, lignin has garnered significant attention due to its potential in adhesive applications. In this study, lignin was extracted from redwood (Pinus sylvestris L.) sawdust using an alkaline delignification process and subsequently modified through propargylation and silanization. Comprehensive characterization using FTIR, solubility tests, TGA/DTG, 1H NMR, SEM-EDX, and contact angle measurements confirmed significant improvements in phys

Structure-performance relationships in lignin-derived carbon aerogels: the role of subunit composition in electrochemical behavior.

Carbon aerogels have emerged as promising electrode materials for supercapacitors due to tunable porous structure and excellent electrochemical property. However, their performance highly depends on both biomass sources and preparation methods. In the present study, three distinct lignins extracted from pine (softwood), poplar (hardwood), and wheat straw (grass) were employed to fabricate lignin-resorcinol-formaldehyde carbon aerogels (LRFCs) via sol-gel polymerization under deep eutectic solvent (DES) system. The lignin chemical structure, molecular weight distribution, and monomeric composit

Enhancing the thermostability of lignin peroxidase: Heme as a keystone cofactor driving stability changes in heme enzymes.

Heme-containing enzymes, critical across life's domains and promising for industrial use, face stability challenges. Despite the demand for robust industrial biocatalysts, the mechanisms underlying the thermal stability of heme enzymes remain poorly understood. Addressing this, our research utilizes a 'keystone cofactor heme-interaction approach' to enhance ligand binding and improve the stability of lignin peroxidase (LiP). We engineered mutants of the white-rot fungus PcLiP (Phanerochaete chrysosporium) to increase thermal stability by 8.66 °C and extend half-life by 29 times without losing

Study on the efficient electrocatalytic depolymerization of α-O-4 bond in lignin assisted by simple electrolyte.

Lignin is anticipated to serve as a replacement for dwindling fossil fuel resources owing to its abundant sources and renewable nature. The electrochemical oxidation technique for depolymerizing lignin has garnered significant interest for its environmentally friendly and mild operating conditions. Nevertheless, the current utilization of auxiliary electrolytes, predominantly organic bases, ionic liquids, and other specialized substances, poses a constraint on the widespread adoption of this approach. Furthermore, there is a scarcity of instances where electrochemical technology has been emplo

Efficient cleavage of CαCβ bonds in lignin using tetrabutylammonium tetrafluoroborate as both the catalyst and auxiliary electrolyte.

Lignin is a promising alternative to fossil resources due to its abundance of benzene ring monomers. However, the stability of the CαCβ bond in lignin has hindered its efficient depolymerization. Electrochemical methods for breaking this bond are not well-studied. This paper presents a novel approach for catalytic depolymerization of lignin to produce acetals under mild conditions, without the need for additional catalysts. Under room temperature and in an air atmosphere, the combination of tetrabutylammonium tetrafluoroborate (TBABF4) as an auxiliary electrolyte and methanol (MeOH) as a solve

Serine hydroxymethyltransferase6 is involved in growth and resistance against pathogens via ethylene and lignin production in Arabidopsis.

Photorespiratory serine hydroxymethyltransferases (SHMTs) are important enzymes of cellular one-carbon metabolism. In this study, we investigated the potential role of SHMT6 in Arabidopsis thaliana. We found that SHMT6 is localized in the nucleus and expressed in different tissues during development. Interestingly SHMT6 is inducible in response to avirulent, virulent Pseudomonas syringae and to Fusarium oxysporum infection. Overexpression of SHMT6 leads to larger flowers, siliques, seeds, roots, and consequently an enhanced overall biomass. This enhanced growth was accompanied by increased sto

Characterization of a phylogenetically distinct extradiol dioxygenase involved in the bacterial catabolism of lignin-derived aromatic compounds.

The actinobacterium Rhodococcus jostii RHA1 grows on a remarkable variety of aromatic compounds and has been studied for applications ranging from the degradation of polychlorinated biphenyls to the valorization of lignin, an underutilized component of biomass. In RHA1, the catabolism of two classes of lignin-derived compounds, alkylphenols and alkylguaiacols, involves a phylogenetically distinct extradiol dioxygenase, AphC, previously misannotated as BphC, an enzyme involved in biphenyl catabolism. To better understand the role of AphC in RHA1 catabolism, we first showed that purified AphC ha

Comparison of the Degradation Performance of Seven Different Choline Chloride-Based DES Systems on Alkaline Lignin.

Lignin is a natural polymer second only to cellulose in natural reserves, whose structure is an aromatic macromolecule composed of benzene propane monomers connected by chemical bonds such as carbon-carbon bonds and ether bonds. Degradation is one of the ways to achieve the high-value conversion of lignin, among which the heating degradation of lignin by deep eutectic solvent (DES) can be an excellent green degradation method. In this study, choline chloride (CC) was used as the hydrogen bond acceptor, and urea (UR), ethylene glycol (GC), glycerol (GE), acetic acid (AA), formic and acetic mixe

The role of acetone-fractionated Kraft lignin molecular structure on surface adhesion to formaldehyde-based resins.

One of the key strategies for valorizing kraft lignin (KL) into value-added products such as bio-based adhesives is to perform solvent fractionation of KL to produce lignin with improved homogeneity. Understanding the structure and properties of fractionated KL will aid in the selection of the best samples for certain applications. In this study, acetone-fractionated KL from softwood and hardwood was characterized to understand its chemical structure, elemental composition, molecular weight, and thermal properties. The results revealed that acetone-insoluble KL (AIKL) fractions from softwood a

Lignin-Enabled Cell Wall Engineering of Wood for Integrated Photothermal Conversion and Phase Change Energy Storage.

Wood-based phase-change composites are promising for solar-thermal energy storage and thermal regulation. However, native wood limits phase-change material (PCM) uptake, whereas extensive delignification removes lignin's intrinsic light-harvesting capacity. We developed a cell-wall nano-engineering approach using aqueous p-toluenesulfonic acid to partially remove hemicellulose and redistribute retained lignin. This treatment increased cell-wall accessibility while preserving the wood's photothermal function. After impregnation with poly(ethylene glycol) impregnation, the resulting composite ac
