Exogenously administered testosterone functions as a contraceptive in the male by suppressing the secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) from the pituitary. After 2 to 3 months of treatment, low levels of FSH and LH lead to markedly decreased sperm concentrations. This approach to contraceptive development appears safe and fully reversible, however, sperm concentrations are not suppressed to zero in all men. Therefore, researchers have combined testosterone with progestins to further suppress pituitary gonadotropins and optimize contraceptive efficacy. Cur

OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between enrollment in patient-centered medical homes (PCMHs) and the receipt of preventive services among adolescents and young adults.
METHODS: Retrospective cohort study including patients of Hennepin County aged 10 to 24 who had face-to-face or telephone encounters with health care providers between 2010 and 2014 at clinics with PCMHs at the Hennepin County Medical Center, Minnesota. Exposure was enrollment in PCMHs. Outcomes were receipt of (1) preventive visits; (2) prescriptions for influenza, meningococcal, and human papillomavirus vaccinations;

BACKGROUND: Long acting and permanent contraceptive methods by far are the most effective, very safe and convenient methods than short acting contraceptive methods. But in less developed countries, use of long acting reversible contraceptive or permanent methods (LARCs/PMs) is very low. Therefore the aim of this study was to identify determinants of long acting contraceptive method utilization among HIV positive reproductive age women.
METHODS: An institutional based case control study was conducted among random sample of 354 HIV positive reproductive age women (total of 97.8% response rate)

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate rates of discontinuation and short interval pregnancy among women with HIV who received a postpartum IUD or implant.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of women who had an IUD or implant placed within 3 months postpartum during a 9-year period (1/1/09 to 2/14/18). We assessed the prevalence of discontinuation within 12 months and rates of subsequent delivery within 18 months. We examined differences in these outcomes between women with and without HIV.
RESULTS: Of the 794 women who received a long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) within 3 months …

PURPOSE: The purpose of this paper is to examine the risk of unintended pregnancy among women during Cook County Jail intake by assessing basic contraceptive history, the need for emergency contraception (EC) at intake, and contraception at release.
DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: This is a cross-sectional study of women 18-50 years old at Cook County Jail in Chicago, Illinois from June 2011 through August 2012. The authors administered the survey at the time of intake on 33 convenient evenings. Surveys consisted of multiple-choice close-ended questions administered via interview. Topics include

OBJECTIVE: Unintended pregnancy and an unmet need for modern contraception remain high among adolescent girls and women in Cambodia. Qualitative descriptive research was conducted to explore the barriers to contraceptive use among young women in urban Cambodia.
METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted among 30 adolescent girls and women aged 16-27 years, using purposive and snowball sampling strategies until data saturation was achieved. The audio-recorded interviews were transcribed verbatim and quality-checked. Inductive thematic data analysis was conducted. The results are presen

The large-scale initiatives to address the global unmet needs for family planning (FP) have gathered and compelled scientists, providers, program managers, and other stakeholders (including users) to re-examine the various methods of modern contraception, focusing on those that are proven to be more effective (long-acting reversible contraceptives and permanent methods), historically more widely used (oral contraceptives, condoms), and in development (male hormonal contraception). Implementing FP programs requires an understanding of the human rights principles underpinning the delivery of con

The health impact of opioid use disorder on women and infant health alongside persistent rates of unintended pregnancy calls for better targeted reproductive healthcare for all women, especially those receiving treatment for opioid treatment disorder and decreasing barriers to care. This cross-sectional mixed-methods study explored the reproductive intentions and contraceptive practices of women (N = 50) in medication-assisted treatment of opioid use disorder with a focus on knowledge and use of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC), specifically intrauterine devices and implants. Eighty…

INTRODUCTION: The intrauterine device (IUD) and intrauterine system (IUS) are widely used forms of long-acting reversible contraception. Occasionally, IUD/IUS users have an ultrasound scan that shows a low-lying IUD/IUS or an IUD/IUS is found incidentally on scan to be low-lying within the uterus. No formal guidelines exist on the clinical implications of this scenario or the most appropriate management. We report here on a systematic review of the literature.
METHODS: A search of the online database PubMed was performed to identify articles relating to low-lying or malpositioned IUD/IUS.

Obesity is a major public health concern affecting an increasing proportion of reproductive-aged women. Avoiding unintended pregnancy is of major importance, given the increased risks associated with pregnancy, but obesity may affect the efficacy of hormonal contraceptives by altering how these drugs are absorbed, distributed, metabolized or eliminated. Limited data suggest that long-acting, reversible contraceptives maintain excellent efficacy in obese women. Some studies demonstrating altered pharmacokinetic parameters and increased failure rates with combined oral contraceptives, the contra

Background: Understanding HIV risk behaviors among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) seeking contraception could help inform integrating HIV prevention services within family planning (FP) clinics. Methods: From 10/2018 to 04/2019, we conducted a survey at 4 FP clinics in Kisumu, Kenya to evaluate risk behaviors among AGYW without HIV infection seeking contraception. All AGYW aged 15-24 were invited to participate following receipt of FP services. Adolescent girls and young women initiating or refilling contraception were included in this analysis. INTRODUCTION: Unplanned pregnancies lead to adverse health outcomes and contribute to economic burdens. A lack of continuity and consistency in immediate postpartum care may be a contributor. The most frequent postpartum medical encounters occur with the child's pediatric health care provider, which represents an opportunity to discuss postpartum contraception. Therefore, our objective was to evaluate postpartum family planning knowledge and behavior in women, and to assess the potential acceptability of a pediatrician-delivered intervention to improve knowledge of and convenient access to con

BACKGROUND: Access to quality removal services is a key component of informed choice in contraceptive implant use; however, limited data exist on users' access to removal services. In Ghana, implants are available across the country and are the most commonly used contraceptive method among married women.
METHODS: From October 2017 and January 2018, we conducted a phone survey with a stratified random sample of 1,159 women who had obtained an implant from a public-sector Ghana Health Service clinic in 2 regions and 1,073 women who had an implant inserted through Marie Stopes International Ghan

CONTEXT: Although reproductive life planning (RLP) is recommended in federal and clinical guidelines and may help insured women make personalized contraceptive choices, it has not been systematically evaluated for effectiveness.
METHODS: In 2014, some 984 privately insured women aged 18-40 who were not intending to become pregnant in the next year were randomly assigned to receive RLP, RLP with contraceptive action planning (RLP+) or information only (the control group).
