Daytime sleepiness and quality of life: are they associated in obese pregnant women?

OBJECTIVE: To know the relationship between daytime sleepiness and quality of life during pregnancy according to the weight gain and baseline weight. METHODS: We studied 216 pregnant women (108 obese and 108 non-obese). At first and third trimester of pregnancy they completed the 12-item short-form health survey (SF-12) and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS). Furthermore, in both visits, we evaluated blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), and reviewed all medical charts to identify pregnancy complications. RESULTS: Weight gain and mental component of quality of life (MCS-12) in both trimeste

Low serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D level is associated with obesity and atherogenesis in adolescent boys.

PURPOSE: We investigated the relationship of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) level with obesity and atherosclerosis in Japanese adolescents. METHODS: We examined 492 children (247 boys and 245 girls) aged 12-13 years. The serum 25(OH)D level was compared among underweight, healthy weight, and overweight children. Spearman correlation coefficient analysis was performed to examine the relationships between the 25(OH)D level and body mass index (BMI), plasma lipids, and blood pressure and to compare the latter between the normal (≥20 ng/mL) and low (<20 ng/mL) 25(OH)D groups. Further, we performed

Validity, tolerability, and feasibility of automated arterial occlusion pressure across body positions.

Objective. Accurate arterial occlusion pressure (AOP) measurement is essential for individualized blood flow restriction (BFR) prescription, but no automated BFR device has been validated across the range of body positions commonly used in practice. This study evaluated the validity, tolerability, and feasibility of automated algorithm-based AOP measurement compared to pulsed-wave Doppler ultrasound across supine, seated, and standing positions.Approach. Forty-six healthy adults completed AOP measurements on the dominant lower limb using both automated and Doppler ultrasound methods at three b

The Relationship Between Psychological Factors and Postural Performance under Different Biofeedback Conditions.

The postural biofeedback technique has been of potential interest to postural rehabilitation, as it promotes conscious postural control and reduces sway, ensuring body stability. However, it remains unclear whether the enhanced awareness of postural performance with biofeedback influences psychological states. Existing research suggests that psychological states such as confidence and anxiety regarding postural and fall risk may impact postural control. This study investigated the effects of two postural biofeedback techniques on balance confidence and anxiety, as well as the association betwe

Neurohormonal consequences of diuretics in different cardiovascular syndromes.

Diuretics have long been used to lower blood pressure in hypertensive patients or to control body fluid and electrolyte homeostasis in diseases such as congestive heart failure, chronic renal failure or cirrhosis. The initial response to diuretics is a negative sodium and fluid balance. The diuretic-induced loss of salt and water activates several hormonal systems such as vasopressin, the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system or the sympathetic nervous system which tend to compensate for the changes in sodium and water balance. This neurohormonal response may have important clinical implication

Interrelationships between Sarcopenia, Bone Mass, and Metabolic Parameters in Pediatric Obesity.

UNLABELLED: <p>Introduction: Sarcopenic obesity (SO) is defined as co-existence of obesity and sarcopenia. The co-occurrence of sarcopenia and obesity might act synergistically and SO might have a greater effect on adverse health outcomes than sarcopenia or obesity alone. The term osteosarcopenic obesity was introduced recently to describe the impairment of bone, muscle, and fat tissues. This study aimed to evaluate cardiometabolic and bone parameters in relation with the presence of sarcopenia and their association with components of sarcopenia (muscle strength, muscle mass, and physical perf

The Effects of Adipose-Derived Stem Cells in a Rat Model of Tobacco-Associated Erectile Dysfunction.

Tobacco use is associated with erectile dysfunction (ED) via a number of mechanisms including vascular injury and oxidative stress in corporal tissue. Adipose derived stem cells (ADSC) have been shown to ameliorate vascular/corporal injury and oxidative stress by releasing cytokines, growth factors and antioxidants. We assessed the therapeutic effects of intracavernous injection of ADSC in a rat model of tobacco-associated ED. Thirty male rats were used in this study. Ten rats exposed to room air only served as negative controls. The remaining 20 rats were passively exposed to cigarette smoke

Preoperative blood pressure and risk of delayed graft function in deceased donor kidney transplantation.

BACKGROUND: In kidney transplantation, delayed graft function (DGF) is associated with increased morbidity and a higher risk of graft failure. Prior research suggests that chronic hypotension increases DGF risk, but the relationship of preoperative blood pressure to DGF is unclear. METHODS: In this single center study of adult deceased donor kidney transplant recipients transplanted between 2015 and 2019, we evaluated the question of whether preoperative mean arterial pressure (MAP) affected DGF risk. Additionally, we investigated whether the risk of DGF was moderated by certain donor and rec

The influence of nasal abnormalities in adherence to continuous positive airway pressure device therapy in obstructive sleep apnea patients.

BACKGROUND: The few studies that examine the effect of nasal abnormalities on continuous positive airway pressure device (CPAP) adherence are controversial. The aim of this study was to evaluate the contribution of nasal abnormalities in CPAP adherence. METHODS: We included patients with moderate to severe OSA. The patients were submitted to rhinoscopy, nasofibroscopy, nasal inspiratory peak flow, and acoustic rhinometry. The patients who used a CPAP for 4 h or more per night for at least 70 % of the nights over a 6-month period were considered to have good adherence. RESULTS: Thirty-four pa

Low Mean Perfusion Pressure Indexed to Body Surface Area is a Powerful Predictor of Poor Outcomes After Heart Transplantation in Patients With High Pre-Transplant Venous Pressure: A Clinical Study With Physiological Insights From Mathematical Modelling of Biventricular Heart Failure.

BACKGROUND & AIM: The deleterious consequences of chronically elevated venous pressure in patients with profound right ventricular or biventricular dysfunction are well known, including renal and hepatic dysfunction, and volume overload. The only option for these patients, if they fail optimal medical treatment, is a heart transplant, as they are not candidates for left ventricular assist device therapy. Mean perfusion pressure (MPP) is important in the outcomes of critically ill patients with high venous pressure. The question arises whether MPP is important for the outcomes of heart transpla

Complex Lower Extremity Wound in the Complex Host: Results From a Multicenter Registry.

BACKGROUND: The complex diabetic lower extremity wound has not been well studied. There are a variety of new technologies now being applied with a paucity of evidence in evaluating their outcomes. The aim of this study is to describe clinical outcomes in the complex lower extremity wound in the comorbid host. We hypothesized that treatment choice would have minimal impact on healing outcomes in this compromised population. METHODS: A multicenter retrospective registry of patients with diabetes and lower extremity wounds was created to compare treatment modalities of collagen-glycosaminoglycan

Comparison of vatinoxan-medetomidine-ketamine-butorphanol and medetomidine-ketamine-butorphanol combinations for intramuscular anesthesia in New Zealand white rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus).

Rabbit perianesthetic morbidity and mortality are high due to unique physiologic and anatomic considerations. α2-adrenergic agonists are frequently used for sedation and anesthesia. However, these drugs can produce negative cardiovascular effects. A commercially available formulation licensed for sedation in dogs (Zenalpha®) combines medetomidine with vatinoxan, a peripherally acting α2-adrenergic antagonist. We evaluated this vatinoxan-medetomidine combination (2 mg/kg of vatinoxan-0.1 mg/kg of medetomidine) co-administered with ketamine (5 mg/kg) and butorphanol (0.5 mg/kg) (ZKB) in rabbits
