Ultrasound-mediated delivery of Pik3cb shRNA using magnetic nanoparticles for the treatment of in-stent restenosis in a rat balloon-injured model.

The aim of the present work was to examine the effect of polyethylene glycol (PEG)-coated superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) nanoparticles carrying Pik3cb short hairpin RNA (shRNA) in the prevention of restenosis with the aid of ultrasound and a magnetic field. SPIO is a type of contrast agent used in medical imaging to enhance the visibility of specific tissues or organs. It consists of tiny iron oxide nanoparticles that can be targeted to specific areas of interest in the body. PEG-coated SPIO nanoparticles carrying Pik3cb shRNA (SPIO-shPik3cb) were prepared, and the particle size and zeta

A magnetic mucus-penetrating nanoagent boosting phlegm elimination for inhalation injury treatment.

Inhalation injuries arising from exposure to toxic gases or smoke in fires or industrial accidents pose grave risks and significant respiratory complications. The limited efficacy of current treatment strategies stems from challenges in delivering therapeutic agents across the mucus barrier to the damaged trachea and bronchus. This research explores the reparative potential and underlying mechanisms of sputum-penetrable magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) coated with poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM), combined with polyethylene glycol (PEG), and loaded with ambroxol hydrochloride (AH) (MNPs@PNIPA

Fucoidan-based antibody-free magnetic nanoparticle for on-site detection of waterborne SARS-CoV-2.

The portable and sensitive point-of-care-test (POCT) method is in urgent need to detect severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) for ensuring public health and safety. However, detection of trace number of pathogens in real water sample from the environment still faces challenges, because complex environment disruptors can rapidly degrade targets. Herein, magnetic beads coated with fucoidan and polydopamine (Fuc-PDA-MBs) were introduced as the capture carrier for pretreatment of samples. Fucoidan, a sulfated polysaccharide, can recognize the SARS-CoV-2 spike (S1) protein re

Specific Loss Power of Co/Li/Zn-Mixed Ferrite Powders for Magnetic Hyperthermia.

An important research effort on the design of the magnetic particles is increasingly required to optimize the heat generation in biomedical applications, such as magnetic hyperthermia and heat-assisted drug release, considering the severe restrictions for the human body's exposure to an alternating magnetic field. Magnetic nanoparticles, considered in a broad sense as passive sensors, show the ability to detect an alternating magnetic field and to transduce it into a localized increase of temperature. In this context, the high biocompatibility, easy synthesis procedure and easily tunable magne

Highly-sensitive detection of Salmonella typhi in clinical blood samples by magnetic nanoparticle-based enrichment and in-situ measurement of isothermal amplification of nucleic acids.

Enteric fever continues to be a major cause of mortality and morbidity globally, particularly in poor resource settings. Lack of rapid diagnostic assays is a major driving factor for the empirical treatment of enteric fever. In this work, a rapid and sensitive method 'Miod' 'has been developed. Miod includes a magnetic nanoparticle-based enrichment of target bacterial cells, followed by cell lysis and loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) of nucleic acids for signal augmentation along with concurrent measurement of signal via an in-situ optical detection system. Application and reactivation of magnetic nanoparticles in Microcystis aeruginosa harvesting.

This study developed a magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) harvesting and reactivation technique for rapid cyanobacteria Microcystis aeruginosa separation. The harvesting of raw MNPs achieved high efficiency of 99.6% with the MNPs dosage of 0.58g MNPs/g dry-biomass, but gradually decreased to 59.1% when directly reused 5 times. With extra ultrasonic chloroform:methanol solvent treatment, the MNPs can be effectively reactivated for M. aeruginosa harvesting with 60% efficiency after 5 times reactivation and the separation efficiency kept above 93% with 0.20g MNPs/g dry-biomass dosage. The cyanobacteri

The peroxidase/catalase-like activities of MFe₂O₄ (M=Mg, Ni, Cu) MNPs and their application in colorimetric biosensing of glucose.

MFe2O4 (M=Mg, Ni, Cu) magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) were found to have catalytic activities similar to those of biological enzymes such as catalase and peroxidase. These nanomaterials, as bifunctional catalase/peroxidases (KatGs), not only could catalyze H2O2 to produce hydroxyl radicals, which oxidized peroxidase substrate to produce color, but also could catalyze the decomposition reaction of H2O2 into water and oxygen directly in the same condition through the catalase-like activity. And it was also found that the amount of generated hydroxyl radicals and oxygen was related to the concentra

Anxiety of microbially synthesized Fe3O4-SPIONs on embryonic/larval ontogeny in red tilapia (Oreochromis sp.).

Iron oxide nanoparticles, recognized for their superparamagnetic properties, are promising for future healthcare therapies. However, their extensive use in medicine and electronics contributes to their discharge into our environments, highlighting the need for further research on their cellular damage effects on aquatic organisms. While the detrimental properties of other compounds have been stated in the early-life stages of fish, the cytotoxic consequences of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) in these stages are still unexplored. Therefore, using the red tilapia (Oreochromi

Breaking the Trade-off in MPI-Guided Magnetic Hyperthermia by Tailoring the Dynamic Magnetization of Magnetic Nanoparticles via Site-Selective Trace Doping.

Among various theranostic strategies, magnetic particle imaging-guided magnetic hyperthermia therapy (MPI-MHT) stands out for its ability to provide real-time, quantitative imaging alongside controlled tumor ablation. Nevertheless, its advancement is hindered by the conflicting requirements for dynamic magnetization of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), which are crucial for optimizing both the MPI signal and the efficacy of MHT. This complexity makes it challenging to enhance performance synergistically within a single agent. Herein, we present an innovative site-selective doping strategy using t

Immobilized Candida antarctica lipase B (CALB) for biodiesel production from rapeseed oil; evaluation of the effect of immobilization protocol.

The catalytic performance of Candida antarctica lipase B (CALB) immobilized on silica-coated magnetic nanoparticles was evaluated for biodiesel production via methanolysis of rapeseed oil. Two different covalent immobilization approaches were compared to assess the effect of immobilization protocols on lipase efficiency. The first approach involved immobilization of CALB on amine-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), which targeted the Lys-rich regions of the enzyme. The second used epoxy-functionalized MNPs, enabling broader nucleophilic groups on the enzyme surface to participate in

A simple and highly efficient method for enriching and separating glycoproteins in complex biological samples using polyethyleneimine- and boric acid-grafted metal-organic frameworks on magnetic nanospheres.

Alterations in glycosylation patterns have been observed in many diseases, including inflammatory, auto-immune, and infectious diseases as well as cancer. However, the low concentrations of glycoproteins in biological samples make it difficult to enrich and separate glycoproteins efficiently before determination. In this study, a composite material was prepared in which Fe3O4-based magnetic nanospheres were modified with polyethyleneimine (PEI)- and boric acid-grafted metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to enable the selective enrichment and separation of glycoproteins from complex biological samp
