Effects of cognitive demands on postmovement motor cortical deactivation.

Postmovement beta-rebounds induced by different intermovement intervals were investigated using magnetoencephalography in 14 healthy participants to test the hypothesis that postmovement motor cortical deactivation over the primary motor cortex depends on movement-related cognitive demands. Shorter latency and lower amplitude in postmovement beta-rebounds over the contralateral primary motor cortex were noted in the short-movement interval movement (repetitive finger lifting). Greater latency span of postmovement beta-rebounds jittering using single-trial analysis in the long-movement interval…

Enhanced Time-Locked Decoding for Spoken Words but Not Environmental Sounds in Natural-Like Auditory Conditions.

Humans are especially sensitive to speech sounds even in complex acoustic environments, but it remains unclear whether speech is tracked differently from other meaningful sounds under such conditions. Magnetoencephalography recordings combined with machine learning have revealed that dynamic time-locking of cortical activation to unfolding speech is crucial for encoding its acoustic-phonetic features. Here we investigated whether a similar mechanism for speech encoding operates during concurrent processing of speech and nonspeech sounds. Twenty participants listened to superimposed spoken word…

Efficacy of Optically Pumped Magnetometers in Detecting Activity From the Cerebellar Cortex.

The cerebral cortex has been extensively studied using magnetoencephalography (MEG), but the cerebellum has received less attention, partly due to technical limitations. Recent advances in high-resolution anatomical modeling enable surface-based analysis of cerebellar activity. At the same time, MEG technology has evolved, with on-scalp systems employing optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs) emerging as an alternative for conventional superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID)-based systems. In contrast to rigid one-size-fits-all SQUID sensor helmets, OPMs allow flexible positioning o…

Gating of somatosensory neural oscillations across the lifespan: A narrative review.

Healthy and pathological aging are associated with progressive changes in cortical inhibition, yet the underlying neural mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Somatosensory gating (SG), the brain's suppression of redundant tactile input, provides a pre-attentive marker of inhibitory function. Paired-pulse paradigms concurrent with noninvasive magnetoencephalography (MEG) provide a millisecond portrayal of the neural dynamics underlying somatosensory processing and the gating of such responses with excellent spatial resolution. This narrative review synthesizes SG research focusing on neur…

Distinct Cortical Networks Subserve Spatio-temporal Sampling in Vision through Different Oscillatory Rhythms.

Although visual input arrives continuously, sensory information is segmented into (quasi-)discrete events. Here, we investigated the neural correlates of spatiotemporal binding in humans with magnetoencephalography using two tasks where separate flashes were presented on each trial but were perceived, in a bistable way, as either a single or two separate events. The first task (two-flash fusion) involved judging one versus two flashes, whereas the second task (apparent motion: AM) involved judging coherent motion versus two stationary flashes. Results indicate two different functional networks…

Evaluation of EEG and MEG responses during Fine Motor Imagery from the same limb.

Motor imagery (MI) is an important brain-computer interface (BCI) paradigm. BCI systems based on fine MI can provide an intuitive control pathway of the outer device. Electroencephalography (EEG) is a widely used modality for MI due to its high temporal resolution and portability. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) has high spatial and temporal resolution, which has received more and more attention. This study designed four kinds of MI tasks of different joints from the same upper limb, including finger, wrist, elbow, and shoulder joints, and additionally added a resting task. The EEG and MEG signal…

Learning of new associations invokes a major change in modulations of cortical beta oscillations in human adults.

Large-scale cortical beta (β) oscillations were implicated in the learning processes, but their exact role is debated. We used MEG to explore the dynamics of movement-related β-oscillations while 22 adults learned, through trial and error, novel associations between four auditory pseudowords and movements of four limbs. As learning proceeded, spatial-temporal characteristics of β-oscillations accompanying cue-triggered movements underwent a major transition. Early in learning, widespread suppression of β-power occurred long before movement initiation and sustained throughout the whole behavior

Spatiotemporal dynamics of abstract and concrete semantic representations.

Dual Coding Theories (DCT) suggest that meaning is represented in the brain by a double code: a language-derived code in the Anterior Temporal Lobe (ATL) and a sensory-derived code in perceptual and motor regions. Concrete concepts should activate both codes, while abstract ones rely solely on the linguistic code. To test these hypotheses, the present magnetoencephalography (MEG) experiment had participants judge whether visually presented words relate to the senses while we recorded brain responses to abstract and concrete semantic components obtained from 65 independently rated semantic feat…

Assessment and Comparison of Nonlinear Measures in Resting-State Magnetoencephalograms in Alzheimer's Disease and Mild Cognitive Impairment.

BACKGROUND: Nonlinear dynamical measures, such as fractal dimension (FD), entropy, and Lempel-Ziv complexity (LZC), have been extensively investigated individually for detecting information content in magnetoencephalograms (MEGs) from patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). OBJECTIVE: To compare systematically the performance of twenty conventional and recently introduced nonlinear dynamical measures in studying AD versus mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and healthy control (HC) subjects using MEG. METHODS: We compared twenty nonlinear measures to distinguish MEG recordings from 36 AD (mean a

Spontaneous beta power, motor-related beta power and cortical thickness in major depressive disorder with psychomotor disturbance.

INTRODUCTION: The psychomotor disturbance is a common symptom in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). The neurological mechanisms of psychomotor disturbance are intricate, involving alterations in the structure and function of motor-related regions. However, the relationship among changes in the spontaneous activity, motor-related activity, local cortical thickness, and psychomotor function remains unclear. METHOD: A total of 140 patients with MDD and 68 healthy controls performed a simple right-hand visuomotor task during magnetoencephalography (MEG) scanning. All patients were div…

Oscillatory markers of neuroHIV-related cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease during attentional interference processing.

People with HIV (PWH) frequently experience mild cognitive decline, which is typically attributed to HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND). However, such declines could also be a sign of early Alzheimer's disease (AD) in older PWH. Distinguishing these two pathologies in PWH is exceedingly difficult, as there is a major knowledge gap regarding their neural and neuropsychological bases. In the current study, we begin to address this knowledge gap by recording magnetoencephalography (MEG) during a flanker interference task in 31 biomarker-confirmed patients on the AD spectrum (ADS), 25 o…

A Crucial Role of the Frontal Operculum in Task-Set Dependent Visuomotor Performance Monitoring.

For adaptive goal-directed action, the brain needs to monitor action performance and detect errors. The corresponding information may be conveyed via different sensory modalities; for instance, visual and proprioceptive body position cues may inform about current manual action performance. Thereby, contextual factors such as the current task set may also determine the relative importance of each sensory modality for action guidance. Here, we analyzed human behavioral, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and magnetoencephalography (MEG) data from two virtual reality-based hand-target …

Longitudinal changes in the neural oscillatory dynamics underlying abstract reasoning in children and adolescents.

Fluid reasoning is the ability to problem solve in the absence of prior knowledge and is commonly conceptualized as "non-verbal" intelligenc … uths. A total of 34 participants age 10 to 16 years-old completed an abstract reasoning task during magnetoencephalography (MEG) on two occasions set one year apart. We found robust longitudinal optimization in theta, beta, and gamma oscillatory activity across years of the study across a distributed network commonly implicated in fluid reasoning abilities. Late combination shows that MEG adds to MRI in classifying MCI versus controls.

Early detection of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is essential for developing effective treatments. Neuroimaging techniques like Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) have the potential to detect brain changes before symptoms emerge. Structural MRI can detect atrophy related to AD, but it is possible that functional changes are observed even earlier. We therefore examined the potential of Magnetoencephalography (MEG) to detect differences in functional brain activity in people with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) - a state at risk of early AD. We introduce a framework for multimodal combination to ask wh…

Two mechanisms facilitate regional independence between brain regions based on an examination of alpha-band activity in healthy control adult males.

BACKGROUND: At rest, 8 to 12 Hz alpha rhythms are the dominant rhythm in the brain, with a common peak alpha frequency (PAF = the frequency at which alpha generators show maximum power) observed across brain regions. Although a common PAF across brain regions should result in high between-region connectivity, especially connectivity measures assessing the phase-similarity between alpha generators, high inter-regional alpha connectivity has not been observed. The present study was conducted as an initial step toward identifying mechanisms that allow brain regions to maintain functional independ

Spatiotemporal dynamics of responses to biological motion in the human brain.

We sought to understand the spatiotemporal characteristics of biological motion perception. We presented observers with biological motion walkers that differed in terms of form coherence or kinematics (i.e., the presence or absence of natural acceleration). Participants were asked to discriminate the facing direction of the stimuli while their magnetoencephalographic responses were concurrently imaged. We found that two univariate response components can be observed around ~200 msec and ~650 msec post-stimulus onset, each engaging lateral-occipital and parietal cortex prior to temporal and fro

The roles of online and offline replay in planning.

Animals and humans replay neural patterns encoding trajectories through their environment, both whilst they solve decision-making tasks and during rest. Both on-task and off-task replay are believed to contribute to flexible decision making, though how their relative contributions differ remains unclear. We investigated this question by using magnetoencephalography (MEG) to study human subjects while they performed a decision-making task that was designed to reveal the decision algorithms employed. We characterised subjects in terms of how flexibly each adjusted their choices to changes in tem…

Human brain connectivity: Clinical applications for clinical neurophysiology.

This manuscript is the second part of a two-part description of the current status of understanding of the network function of the brain in health and disease. We start with the concept that brain function can be understood only by understanding its networks, how and why information flows in the brain. The first manuscript dealt with methods for network analysis, and the current manuscript focuses on the use of these methods to understand a wide variety of neurological and psychiatric disorders. Disorders considered are neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer disease and amyotrophic lat
