Spindle cell carcinoma (SCC) is a rare variant of squamous cell carcinoma characterized by elongated and pleomorphic epithelial cells that resemble a sarcoma. Due to its rareness, and histological resemblance to various sarcomas, the diagnosis of this neoplasia is challenging. Herein we present the case of an 82-year-old female with a polypoid, ulcerated, soft tissue mass located on the left side of the maxilla. The tomographic examination showed a hyperdense mass that infiltrated the orbital cavity, ethmoidal cells, middle and lower nasal concha, maxillary sinus, zygomatic arch, and mandibula

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most frequently encountered neoplasm in the oral cavity, which accounts for more than 90% of all cancers. Except for carcinoma of the lip vermilion, the most common sites of oral SCC are the tongue and floor of mouth, followed at a lower frequency by the soft palate, gingiva, and buccal mucosa. Clinically, it may be misdiagnosed because of its variable appearances. This case report presents a case of well-differentiated SCC of gingiva. A 48-year-old male patient reported to the Department of Periodontology, School of Dental Sciences, Karad, with a 1-ye

Considering the confusion in the literature regarding local recurrence, spread, or metastases of pleomorphic adenoma (PA) in the head and neck region, the aim of this study was to enhance understanding of the characteristics of metastasizing pleomorphic adenoma (MPA) by reviewing the literature and presenting a case. English language articles with proof of metastases were included in the literature review. Of the 80 cases in the literature with MPA, 46 were female and 33 were male (sex missing for one case). Thirty-five percent of the neoplasms affected the bones; the maxilla was affected in f

Myoepithelial carcinoma (MC) is a malignant salivary gland neoplasm whose tumor cells demonstrate cytologic differentiation toward myoepithelial cells and lack ductal or acinar differentiation. It is a relatively rare tumor and many a times remains undiagnosed because of histopathological heterogeneity. It represents about 0.4-0.6% of all salivary gland tumors and 1.2-1.5% of carcinomas. It occurs predominantly in the parotid gland with a mean age of presentation being 55 years (range 14-86) with no sex predilection. MC appears to be a low grade malignancy when arising in a pleomorphic adenoma

The improvement in survival and local control measures in children with neoplasm in the head and neck region may lead to increased iatrogenic adverse effects of treatment. The aim of this study was to report a new case of the long-term effects of chemoradiotherapy on oral health and dental development in a patient treated for Hodgkin's disease at an early age. In this case report, a 26-year-old female is presented, who at the age of 5 years received chemotherapy and radiotherapy for Hodgkin's disease in the neck region. The patient consulted the Department of Oral Medicine because of dental ch

Five cases of central squamous cell carcinoma of the mandible were investigated with the use of computed tomography. Bucco-lingual extent and spread along the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve were evaluated. Three patients with trismus showed involvement of the masseter or medial pterygoid muscle on computed tomography. Involvement of more than two landmarks along the trigeminal nerve were observed in cases with both paresthesia of the lower lip and severe pain that resembled neuralgia. Perineural invasion was confirmed histologically in four cases, and all of these patients had bot

The spindle cell tumor is a variant of sarcomatoid carcinoma that mostly affects the oral cavity. Bone involvement in this tumor leads to a wide excision, which sometimes requires resection of both the maxilla and mandible. The maxilla and mandible are important bones that function to form the 3-dimensional dimensions of the facial bones. The fibular bone can be selected to replace the facial bone because of its strong structure with a skin paddle, long pedicle, and proper bone shape. The authors present the case of a 24-year-old female who underwent maxillectomy and total hemimandibulectomy a

Of the various oral carcinoma subsites, the carcinomas related to the mandibular region (alveolar ridge, floor of mouth, lower retromolar area, lower buccal sulcus) are among those with the highest rate of recurrences. Neoplastic invasion of the mandible is one of the factors promoting the recurrences. Determining the presence and extent of bony involvement is therefore critical in the management of patients. The surgeon has several methods to aid in the determination of margins of invasion: radiology, gross clinical inspection, and intraoperative frozen section. Each has its deficiences and i

Metastasis to the penis is an unusual event. Bladder and prostate tumors are the main sources of penile metastasis. Other sites include the rectosigmoid, kidney, and, less frequently, the pancreas, liver, nasopharynx, and lung. Other sources include malignant melanoma and Burkitt's lymphoma. The differential diagnosis includes idiopathic priapism, venereal or infectious disease, tuberculosis, Peyronie's disease, and primary penile tumor. Chondrosarcoma of the jaw is responsible for 10% of all chondrosarcomas that originate with craniofacial bones. Its behavior is usually characterized by local

A free jejunal graft was used either as a patch or as a conduit in 40 cases of reconstruction of the oral cavity, hypopharynx, and upper esophagus. Compared with previous intraoral reconstructive techniques using skin or myocutaneous flaps, one-stage free jejunal grafts result in low morbidity, rapid postoperative recovery, and no additional head and neck scars. Because of secure vascularization, the retention of temporary mandible implants is made safer. In addition to tongue reconstruction, facial contouring can also be achieved by the use of mesenteric fatty tissue. The well-vascularized ph

A periapical radiopacity is frequently encountered by chance on a conventional periapical or panoramic x-ray. However, local pain and/or swelling in the area of a radiopacity is seldom seen. Here, we report on 2 cases of patients referred to the oral and maxillofacial surgeon with a painful periapical radiopacity in the lower jaw. The clinically and radiologically assumed diagnosis was a cementoblastoma, which was confirmed by histopathological examination following its surgical removal. A cementoblastoma is a rare, benign odontogenic tumor, mostly found in patients younger than 30. Treatment

Neuroblastoma is the most common extracranial solid cancer of infancy, occurring mainly in the adrenal gland, with high metastatic potential. However, involvement of the head and neck region is rare. Here, we present two cases of metastatic neuroblastoma of childhood, in which a mandibular swelling was the first sign of disseminated disease. Case 1 describes a 4-year-old boy with a 2-week history of painful swelling in the left mandibular region, body soreness and weakness. Panoramic radiography and computed tomography showed a destructive lesion in the left mandibular ramus. Case 2 describes
