Pyogenic cervical osteomyelitis presenting as a massive prevertebral abscess in a patient with rheumatoid arthritis.

Pre-existing rheumatoid arthritis appeared to have masked the diagnosis and contributed to a succession of hazardous events in a 58-year-old man with pyogenic cervical osteomyelitis. A massive prevertebral abscess and near asphyxiation finally led to the diagnosis of an indolent Staphylococcus aureus infection in a course marked by antecedent staphylococcal sepsis, a series of dangerous cervical spine chiropractic manipulations in the presence of advanced bony destruction, and, ultimately, cervical spine bony collapse and gibbus formation. The absence of myelopathy despite long-standing progre

Complex regional pain syndrome and chiropractic.

OBJECTIVE: Complex regional pain syndromes (CRPS) represent curious and difficult syndromes for both patient and clinician. CRPS presents as a triad of signs and symptoms, usually after a seemingly trivial injury to a peripheral joint or appendage. The clinical triad includes severe pain, vasomotor changes in and around the affected area, and trophic changes in the affected limb. Many of the acute symptoms are similar to those seen after many acute injuries, which makes an early diagnosis often times difficult. Current treatment protocols revolve around aggressive physical therapy plus pharmac

A suspected case of ulnar tunnel syndrome relieved by chiropractic extremity adjustment methods.

BACKGROUND: There has been little published about ulnar tunnel syndrome (UTS) as it relates to the practice of chiropractic, despite chiropractors' apparent interest in nerve compression syndromes and a growing trend toward providing chiropractic extremity care. This syndrome is not very common and could be mistaken for carpal tunnel syndrome by practitioners who are not aware of the differences. OBJECTIVE: To discuss the case of a patient with ulnar tunnel syndrome whose symptoms were resolved by chiropractic extremity adjustment. Clinical features A 45-year-old female patient complained of

Ileum terminal antibiotic infusion affects jejunal and colonic specific microbial population and immune status in growing pigs.

BACKGROUND: A recent hypothesis purports that spinal manipulation may cause changes at a brain level. Functional Neurology, a mainly chiropractic approach, promotes the use of spinal manipulation to improve 'brain function' as if it were a proven construct. No systematic review has been performed to investigate how well founded this hypothesis is. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether spinal manipulation has an effect on 'brain function' that is associated with any clinical benefits. METHOD: In this systematic review, the literature was searched in PubMed, Embase, and PEDro (final search Februar
