The outcome of behavior therapy for agoraphobia in relation to marital adjustment.

After intensively treating 18 agoraphobic patients with 13 1/2 hours of exposure in vivo, we examined the effects on both patients and their spouses over a period of six months, using questionnaire measures of symptoms and marital adjustment. Those patients whose marriages were rated as unsatisfactory before treatment improved less during treatment, and were significantly more likely to relapse during follow-up, than those patients with satisfactory marriages. The marriages of nine patients appeared to be adversely influenced by their symptomatic improvement, and two distinct types of marital …

His and Her Education and Marital Dissolution: Adding a Contextual Dimension.

Educationally hypogamous marriages, where the wife is more educated than the husband, have been expected to be less stable than other educational pairings, in part because they do not conform to social norms. With the reversal of the gender gap in education, such marriages have become more common than in the past. Recent research suggests that this new context might be beneficial for the stability of hypogamous unions compared to other educational pairings. Here, we investigate how educational matches in married couples are associated with divorce risks taking into account the local prevalence…

Pre-marital predictors of marital violence in the WHO World Mental Health (WMH) Surveys.

PURPOSE: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a pervasive public health problem. Existing research has focused on reports from victims and few studies have considered pre-marital factors. Consanguinity rates among Syrian refugees in Lebanon: a study on genetic awareness.

Consanguineous marriage is a deeply rooted tradition in the Arab world. Such marriages are linked to higher rates of recessive genetic diseases. During the Syrian conflict, which started in 2011, around one million Syrian individuals became refugees in Lebanon. This study assessed the consanguinity rates among Syrian refugees living in Lebanon up to three successive consanguineous generations, and examined refugees' awareness of the possible consequences of consanguineous marriage and their attitudes towards consanguinity. Their knowledge of, and access to, premarital screening was also assess…

A joint model of marital childbearing and marital disruption.

Married couples with children appear to be less likely to end their marriages than childless couples, especially when the children are young. Although this suggests that children affect the chances that their parents will divorce, the process may not be so simple: the chances that the marriage will last also may affect couples' willingness to make the commitment to the marriage implied by having children. This paper uses data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) to test the hypothesis that the risk of disruption faced by a married woman affects the chances that she will conceive and …

Thalassemia treatment and prevention in Uva Province, Sri Lanka: a public opinion survey.

Due to its excessive cost thalassemia management is a major health care problem in Sri Lanka. The majority of doctors are using only desferrioxamine (DFO), in grossly inadequate doses mainly because of its unavailability. Deferiprone (L1), which is more affordable, is not used due to fear of toxicity, as previously reported. Arthropathy attributed to L1 has been observed in some patients, and has led to the discontinuation of the drug in all patients, without scientific rationale. The proposed thalassemia prevention project for Uva Province is based on prevention of marriages between carriers.…

The Occurrence and Traumatic Impact of Sexual Revictimization in Newlywed Couples.

The present study examines whether individuals with a history of child sexual abuse are at risk of sexual revictimization in marriage and, if so, whether these experiences are associated with increased trauma symptomatology. Two hundred heterosexual newlywed couples were recruited from marriage license records and completed self-report assessments of past sexual victimization and sexual coercion within the marital dyad. Actor-Partner Interdependence Models revealed that, compared to non-victims, women with a history of child sexual abuse (CSA) experienced more acts of sexual coercion by their …

Marital instability after midlife.

"Divorce in later life has been shown to produce dramatic declines in the economic, psychological, and physical well-being of marital partners. This study examines the prevalence and determinants of marital disruption after midlife using Becker's theory of marital instability. Using recent Canadian national data, the marital outcomes of women and men who were married as of age 40 are tracked across the remaining years of the marriage. Cox proportional hazard regression models indicate stabilizing effects of the duration of the marriage, the age at first marriage, the presence of young children…

["Psychologic marital unfitness" in cyclothymia? A case report on the topic of the annullment procedure in canon law].

According to the Canon Law (CIC) of the catholic church a marriage can be annulled because of psychological inability under certain conditions. We present the case report of a married woman, who fell ill with cyclothymia after her first childbirth. Her marriage was annulled under canon 1095 (n.3 CIC) because of psychological inability to fulfill martial obligations. The authors believe that this represents a clear cut case of discrimination against patients with mental disorders: on the one hand the catholic church claims that every martial bond is principally indissoluble; on the other hand t…

Arranged matches and mental illness: therapists' dilemmas.

Traditional societies place especial value on marriage and having children, and marriages are often arranged. A series of situations and dilemmas associated with arranged matches and their consequences are described in the course of mental health work with ultra-orthodox Jewish people with severe mental illness. Issues of confidentiality may arise with parents and matchmakers; on the other hand, respectful cooperation with religious authorities, counselors in the community, and family members is important. Information on genetic counseling, contraception, medication during pregnancy, and breas…

Six-year outcome of the national premarital screening and genetic counseling program for sickle cell disease and β-thalassemia in Saudi Arabia.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Saudi Arabia has a high prevalence of hereditary hemoglobin disorders. We used six years of premarital screening data to estimate the burden of sickle disease and β-thalassemia over the program period and to assess the frequency of at-risk marriage detection and prevention. DESIGN AND SETTING: Retrospective review, premarital couples attending premarital and genetic counseling clinic…

Jordan: communities and community genetics.

The population in Jordan mounted from half a million in 1952 to 5.3 millions in 2004 and is composed of a variety of ethnic groups, the majority being Arabs. Couples nowadays tend to have fewer children, with the total fertility rate falling from 7.4 in 1976 to 3.7 in 2004. Consanguineous marriages are traditionally favored, with the preferred marriage partner being the offspring of the father's brother. First-cousin marriages declined from 28.5% for marriages contracted between 1950 and 1979 to 19.5% for marriages contracted after 1980. In the overall population, carrier rates for beta-thalas…
