A presumptive role of lower ureteral angles in the difficulty of ureteral access sheath insertion during retrograde intrarenal surgery.

PURPOSE: We aimed to investigate whether the angle created by the most lateral portion of the lower ureter is responsible for the difficulty in ureteral access sheath insertion. METHODS: All male patients scheduled to undergo flexible ureteroscopy were enrolled. Patients with ureteral stricture in any course of the ureter and patients with problems at the ureteral opening were excluded. We set the coordinates of the most lateral portion of the lower ureter as M (x, y, z) using computed tomography. The bladder outlet was marked as the zero point O (0, 0, 0). The vector that passed through the

Anodal High-definition Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation over the Posterior Parietal Cortex Modulates Approximate Mental Arithmetic.

The representation and processing of numerosity is a crucial cognitive capacity. Converging evidence points to the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) as primary "number" region. However, the exact role of the left and right PPC for different types of numerical and arithmetic tasks remains controversial. In this study, we used high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) to further investigate the causal involvement of the PPC during approximative, nonsymbolic mental arithmetic. Eighteen healthy participants received three sessions of anodal HD-tDCS at 1-week intervals in coun

The neural correlates of mental arithmetic in adolescents: a longitudinal fNIRS study.

BACKGROUND: Arithmetic processing in adults is known to rely on a frontal-parietal network. However, neurocognitive research focusing on the neural and behavioral correlates of arithmetic development has been scarce, even though the acquisition of arithmetic skills is accompanied by changes within the fronto-parietal network of the developing brain. Furthermore, experimental procedures are typically adjusted to constraints of functional magnetic resonance imaging, which may not reflect natural settings in which children and adolescents actually perform arithmetic. Therefore, we investigated th

Relationship between saccadic eye movements and formation of the Krukenberg's spindle-a CFD study.

In this research, a series of numerical simulations for evaluating the effects of saccadic eye movement on the aqueous humour (AH) flow field and movement of pigment particles in the anterior chamber (AC) was performed. To predict the flow field of AH in the AC, the unsteady forms of continuity, momentum balance and conservation of energy equations were solved using the dynamic mesh technique for simulating the saccadic motions. Different orientations of the human eye including horizontal, vertical and angles of 10° and 20° were considered. The Lagrangian particle trajectory analysis approach

Modelling and Optimal Control of Typhoid Fever Disease with Cost-Effective Strategies.

We propose and analyze a compartmental nonlinear deterministic mathematical model for the typhoid fever outbreak and optimal control strategies in a community with varying population. The model is studied qualitatively using stability theory of differential equations and the basic reproductive number that represents the epidemic indicator is obtained from the largest eigenvalue of the next-generation matrix. Both local and global asymptotic stability conditions for disease-free and endemic equilibria are determined. The model exhibits a forward transcritical bifurcation and the sensitivity ana

Fact learning in complex arithmetic-the role of the angular gyrus revisited.

In recent theoretical considerations as well as in neuroimaging findings the left angular gyrus (AG) has been associated with the retrieval of arithmetic facts. This interpretation was corroborated by higher AG activity when processing trained as compared with untrained multiplication problems. However, so far neural correlates of processing trained versus untrained problems were only compared after training. We employed an established learning paradigm (i.e., extensive training of multiplication problems) but measured brain activation before and afte training to evaluate neural correlates of

Neuro-cognitive performance is enhanced during short periods of microgravity.

There is increasing interest in the effects of microgravity on cognitive processing, particularly as it relates to the potential for human space travel. While findings to date are quite inconsistent, studies reporting a decrement in cognitive performance have generally not been able to distinguish between the direct influence of microgravity, and any associated influence of stress. Furthermore, the currently available findings are primarily based on behavioral observations, and there is a need to better understand the underlying neurophysiological responses. The current study aimed to determin

Estimation of cell proliferation dynamics using CFSE data.

Advances in fluorescent labeling of cells as measured by flow cytometry have allowed for quantitative studies of proliferating populations of cells. The investigations (Luzyanina et al. in J. Math. Biol. 54:57-89, 2007; J. Math. Biol., 2009; Theor. Biol. Med. Model. 4:1-26, 2007) contain a mathematical model with fluorescence intensity as a structure variable to describe the evolution in time of proliferating cells labeled by carboxyfluorescein succinimidyl ester (CFSE). Here, this model and several extensions/modifications are discussed. Suggestions for improvements are presented and analyzed

Spatial-numerical associations survive spatial frequency equalization in an adult unimanual SNARC task.

The origins of spatial-numerical associations (SNAs), such as the SNARC (Spatial-Numerical Association of Response Codes) effect, remain debated. The Brain's Asymmetric Frequency Tuning (BAFT) hypothesis recently proposed that non-symbolic SNAs may arise from hemispheric asymmetries in spatial frequency (SF) processing, rather than reflecting a genuine spatial representation of number. Here we examined whether SNAs persist even in adult human cognition when both SF cues and, crucially, bimanual response confounds are eliminated. Participants performed a Go/No-Go non-symbolic magnitude comparis

A High Throughput and User-Friendly Computational Tool for Quantifying and Visualizing Symmetry Variation in Image Datasets.

Symmetry is a fundamental property of biological systems, yet it is commonly reduced to discrete, subjective classifications that fail to capture the continuous and graded nature of symmetry in real organisms. We present a high-throughput, user-friendly computational framework for quantifying and visualizing biological symmetry as a continuous variable using transformation information ( T I ), an information theoretic measure that quantifies the divergence between an object and its transformed self. We establish key mathematical properties of T I , including invariance, equivariance, and Lip

Theory and simulations of delayed stochastic and deterministic models of prion diseases.

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs), such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and prion diseases, are characterized by the dynamical spread of toxic proteins through the brain. In prion diseases, cellular prion protein ( PrP C ), produced by neurons, misfolds into a toxic form, known as scrapie prion protein ( PrP Sc ). PrP Sc induces neuronal stress which ultimately leads to cell death. In this paper, we develop mathematical models for the progression of prion diseases, incorporating a cellular defense mechanism that introduces a delay term affecting protein translation and a volatility term account

A novel mathematical model of seasonality in Oropouche virus transmission in Amazonas, Brazil.

Oropouche virus (OROV) is a vector-borne arbovirus that has caused more than 500,000 infections across South America, Central America, and the Caribbean. Its primary vector, the midge species Culicoides paraensis, acquires the virus from wild reservoir hosts and transmits it to humans during blood feeding. As outbreaks within the Amazon basin continue to occur and confirmed cases steadily increase, a proper understanding of the interplay between climatic variables, vector behavior, and OROV transmission is needed to develop effective public health interventions. In this paper, we develop a nov

A Kermack-McKendrick type epidemic model with double threshold phenomenon (and a possible application to Covid-19).

The suggestion by K.L. Cooke (1967) that infected individuals become infective if they are exposed often enough for a natural disease resistance to be overcome is built into a Kermack-McKendrick type epidemic model with post-latency age. Both the case that the resistance may be the same for all hosts and the case that it is distributed among the host population are considered. In addition to the familiar threshold behavior of the final size of the epidemic with respect to a basic reproductive number, an Allee effect is generated for the final cumulative force of infection by the final cumulati

Spatiotemporal SEIQR Epidemic Modeling with Optimal Control for Vaccination, Treatment, and Social Measures.

This paper introduces a spatiotemporal SEIQR epidemic model governed by a system of reaction-diffusion partial differential equations that incorporates optimal control strategies. The model captures the transmission dynamics of an infectious disease across space and time. The model incorporates the quarantined compartment Q as part of the epidemic structure. It also includes three time-dependent control variables representing vaccination, treatment of quarantined individuals, and non-pharmaceutical interventions that reduce transmission. The study has four main objectives: (i) to prove the exi

Evolution of Cooperation in Spatially Structured Group-Selection Models of the Continuous Prisoner's Dilemma.

We consider continuous Prisoner's Dilemma games played in a spatial setting by group-structured populations. The evolutionary dynamics is driven by within-group individual-level birth and death events, and by group-level fission and extinction events. Within groups, individuals play well-mixed games, while groups play games on a 1-dimensional spatial grid against their nearest neighbours. Payoffs from individual-level games affect birth rates of individuals, and payoffs from group-level games affect group extinction and fission probabilities. It is well known that the within-group evolution by

Regions in the human inferior temporal gyrus are engaged in numerosity processing across visual stimulus categories.

The visual number form areas, here referred to as inferior temporal gyrus-math (ITG-math), have gained recent attention as a neural substrate of mathematical cognition. Yet, the function of these regions remains debated with some research suggesting selectivity for digits and others suggesting a visual stimulus-independent role in mathematical processing. Here we addressed this debate by exploring the impact of different tasks and stimuli on neural responses in ITG-math. Participants were presented with digits and UFOs, while performing a 1-back task either on stimulus numerosity or on stimulu

Dual neural foundations of coding cognition: Language comprehension scaffolds initial learning before mathematical systems engage.

To resolve the contested cognitive foundations of programming, we used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to compare brain activity in 29 coding-naïve adults while they performed three carefully contrasted tasks, each selected to probe a distinct cognitive function: graphical coding (ScratchJr) engaged linguistic parsing and logical-spatial operations; language comprehension targeted semantic and syntactic processing; and mathematical tasks (mental rotation and arithmetic) tapped visuospatial reasoning and numerical cognition. Univariate analyses revealed that coding robustly engage

The effect of treatment-induced resistance in a two-strain tuberculosis model with age structure and spatial diffusion.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a highly contagious chronic infectious disease that, without timely intervention, can lead to severe health consequences or even death. Improper or incomplete treatment often induces the emergence of drug-resistant TB (DR-TB), which greatly complicates disease management and intensifies its public health burden. This paper develops and analyzes a two-strain TB transmission model incorporating age structure during latency, spatial diffusion, and a treatment-induced resistance pathway. Methodologically, we establish the global existence and non-negativity of model solutions

Complex bifurcation dynamics of tumor-immune interactions incorporating combination therapies.

The complex nonlinear dynamics of tumor-immune interactions drive tumor heterogeneity and complicate treatment strategies. While bifurcation and multistability analyses of mathematical models can uncover critical system dynamics, few studies have explored bifurcation-particularly cusp bifurcation-in high-dimensional tumor-immune systems, as most existing analyses are limited to simplified two-dimensional models. In this study, we extend the tumor-immune model proposed by Anderson et al. (2024a) to incorporate combination therapy with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) and C-C chemokine recept
