The maxillary sinus is a rare anatomic site for Hodgkin lymphoma, as only 1 such case has been previously reported in the literature. Nevertheless, we recommend that lymphoma be considered in the differential diagnosis of a mass that involves the maxillary sinus or any other unusual extranodal site in the head and neck. Lymphoma in a patient who presents with disease in an unusual site and without lymphadenopathy is difficult to diagnose. We report the case of a 60-year-old woman who presented with nasal congestion and obstruction. Examination revealed an abnormal-appearing mucosa involving th…

BACKGROUND: Maxillary sinus surgery has been evolving and, due to advances in technology, endoscopic surgery is widely used in the maxillary sinus for multiple pathologies that 15 years ago were treated through open approaches. For this reason, we conducted an observational descriptive study.
METHODS: We reviewed the clinical records of patients with pathology involving the maxillary sinus and who were surgically treated from January 2008 to December 2009, type of disease, surgical approach used, presence of complications, pre- and postoperative score according to the Lund-Mackay scale, and r…

INTRODUCTION: Lymphoepithelial carcinoma of the maxillary sinus is a very rare malignancy and it can be difficult to make a pre-operative diagnosis.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 72-year-old Caucasian woman presented to our facility with an isolated right-side epistaxis that had been present for three months, with the results of a computed tomography scan showing a soft tissue mass in the right maxillary sinus with an impacted tooth. The results of a transnasal endoscopic biopsy were compatible with a lymphoepithelial carcinoma, following which our patient underwent a radical excision of the mass. The…

We report a rare case of desmoplastic ameloblastoma lesion that filled the entire maxillary sinus. The patient visited our hospital with a chief complaint of swelling around the upper left premolars. A panoramic X-ray captured an image of a mixture of ill-defined radiolucency and radiopacity from the swollen area to the maxillary sinus. Computed tomography (CT) and Magnetic resononce imaging (MRI) showed that the lesion occupied almost the entire left maxillary sinus and had entered the nasal cavity. A pathologic diagnosis of ameloblastoma was made after biopsy, and the tumor was removed and t…

Ameloblastomas are epithelial odontogenic tumors in the mandibula or maxilla with potential local infiltrating growth; therefore, relapses can occur after incomplete resection. Among the different histological subtypes, the following are of clinical importance: The so-called unicystic ameloblastoma, radiologically presenting as a common dentigerous cyst, and the so-called extraosseous ameloblastoma. This case report describes the rare combination of a unicystic ameloblastoma with extraosseous localization in the maxillary sinus and association with a displaced tooth. This unusual constellation…

Pneumosinus dilatans is a rare disease in which 1 or more paranasal sinuses are dilated without functional alteration. The frontal sinus is the most commonly affected site, with involvement of the maxillary sinus being rare. Asymmetrical facial contour is the most common sign, and nasal obstruction and pain may also be present. We describe 6 cases of maxillary pneumosinus dilatans with histories of protrusion of the malar region. Plane radiography and computed tomography revealed abnormal expansion of the maxillary sinus without thinning of the bony wall, leading to a diagnosis of maxillary pn…

A 7-year-old girl had presented with right cheek swelling noted 3 months earlier. It was slowly progressive. Swelling was well defined, non-tender, smooth, firm in consistency and measured 4×4 cm. Intraoral examination revealed no missing teeth. Permanent teeth - central incisors (upper and lower), primary lateral incisor, canine and first and second molar were present. X-ray paranasal sinuses showed well-defined unilocular radiolucency with a thin sclerotic border enclosing permanent first molar, premolar and canine on the right side and first molar on the left side. The cyst was removed by e

This article is divided into six sections that are related to six commonly used operations for surgery on the maxillary sinus. The authors discuss maxillary sinoscopy, the Caldwell-Luc procedure, extended middle meatus antrostomy, endoscopic maxillary sinus antrostomy, minimally invasive sinus technique, and balloon sinus procedures. In each of these procedures, the authors discuss potential complications and address prevention and management strategies. Maxillary sinus surgery can greatly improve patients' symptoms and disease process. The authors encourage the surgeon to take great care in e…

CONCLUSIONS: The current report, as well as other studies and case series, suggests that there is great potential for healing and bone formation in the maxillary sinus membrane. The precise mechanism is not known. Further clinical and his …

In endonasal surgery, approaching the anterior maxillary wall via the ipsilateral nostril is difficult. It is necessary to have good visual and instrument control when removing lesions such as inverted papilloma. We describe an approach through a temporary septotomy which provides good access from the contralateral nostril. The contralateral mucoperichondrial incision is anterior and the ipsilateral one posterior. The cartilage is hinged superiorly. There is minimal chance of perforation.

Endoscopic repair of orbital blow-out fractures could become a predictable and efficient treatment alternative to traditional methods. However, maxillary sinus endoscopy provides a complex and disorienting view of the orbital floor. To be a useful and consistent technique for providing access to the orbital floor, specific knowledge of maxillary endoscopic anatomy is required. The purpose of the study was to provide an anatomic description of the orbital floor via the endoscopic approach. Objectives include defining consistent landmarks for use in endoscopic repair of orbital floor fractures. …

Meningiomas account for nearly 15% of primary brain tumors, but extracranial meningiomas are very rare. We presented a case of invasive maxillary sinus meningioma. A 50-year-old man presented with facial tenderness and severe pain in the left cheek. He had a prior surgery for a meningioma in the left frontal lobe eight months before. Physical examination and computed tomography showed a mass in the left maxillary sinus. Histopathological result of the biopsy obtained via the Caldwell-Luc approach was invasive meningioma. The mass was removed with the sinus mucosa. The histology of the resected…

Malignant melanoma is a common disease in dermatology. Especially the skin exposed to the sun is frequently affected. Primary tumors of the same entity in the respiratory mucosa is very rare. We report about a 80 year old man, who came into our clinic with recurrent epistaxis and a nasal congestion on the right side. Attendant, a protrusio of the right bulbus could be seen. After obtaining biopsies the diagnosis of a malignant melanoma of the right maxillary sinus was obvious. We sent the patient to primary radiotherapy with a total dose of 59,4 Gy. With this therapy all clinical symptoms, the…

An unusual case is reported of accidental extrusion of sodium hypochlorite solution into the maxillary sinus during instrumentation in the course of root canal treatment of a maxillary premolar. This caused a burning sensation accompanied by nasal bleeding, swallowing of blood, and interrupted breathing. The case was managed by irrigating with sterile saline, arresting nasal bleeding, and administering antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, and decongestants.

Maxillary sinus mucoceles account for less than 10% of all paranasal sinus mucoceles. They are reported mostly as long-term sequelae of Caldwell-Luc operations. Orbital involvement is an extremely rare condition that might result in orbital complications. A 43-year-old woman presented to the ophthalmology department with progressive ophthalmologic complaints. She was referred to our department for suspicion of a mass in the left maxillary sinus. The patient had undergone a left Caldwell-Luc sinus procedure two years before followed by two maxillary sinus lavages. Findings of computed tomograph…
