Surgical treatment of maxillonasal dysplasia or Binder syndrome is a challenge for surgeons. Its aim is to replace or substitute the missing or malformed anatomic structures. The authors report a comprehensive analysis for the understanding of the mechanisms resulting in the lack of maxillonasal development observed in Binder syndrome. The evolution of the surgical treatment due to facial function analysis is explained, and the surgical treatment of 20 consecutive cases over the last 20 years is reviewed, illustrated by three-dimensional reconstruction to emphasize the choice made and the resu

Coffin-Lowry Syndrome is characterized by mental retardation, skeletal abnormalities, delayed bone development, short stature, tapered fingers, large ears, orbital hypertelorism, anteverted nares, and a prominent frontal region. This inherited disorder is x-linked and is genetically mapped to the Xp22.2 chromosomal region. This report presents the dental findings of three male members of the same family: an older brother and younger identical twins; all three were first examined at age 10. The father's family came from North Africa and the mother's from Eastern Europe. In addition to the repor

A case of arthrogryposis multiplex congenita that affected a patient's temporomandibular joint is described. Preoperatively, the patient's interincisal opening was limited to 9 mm. Elective surgery was performed, which consisted of bilateral coronoidotomies, right and left meninscectomies, capsular release, and lateral pterygoid myotomies. Physical therapy was initiated postoperatively. Eighteen weeks after the surgery, the patient was able to open 18 mm and force open to 20 mm. The patient also noted significant improvement in speech and jaw function in the postoperative period.

Several aspects of the management of developmental asymmetrical facial growth are addressed. The abnormality is further defined. Methods of examination and assessment of records are discussed. A complicating factor has been the adoption of too many classification systems. With three-dimensional imaging techniques (computed tomography scan and stereophotography) great advancement has been made in efforts at describing the range of variation. Hemifacial microsomia patients are best treated in multidisciplinary centers by competent specialists with the necessary expertise and skills. The procedur

This study aimed to measure the association between condylar morphology and a measure of the maxillary centroid following bimaxillary surgery using mandibular-dependent splints. The study included skeletal Class III and Class II malocclusion patients, excluding those with facial asymmetry. Based on computed tomography imaging patients were characterized into normal or abnormal temporomandibular joint (TMJ) groups. A computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing splints were fabricated to reposition the maxilla in Le Fort I osteotomy. The primary outcome measure was the absolute difference

Malignant hyperthermia (MH) is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by abnormal calcium homeostasis in skeletal muscles in response to triggering agents. Autopsy, morphology, and genetic analysis were performed on a 19-year-old man who died rapidly after exposure to sevoflurane during maxillofacial surgery. Muscle spasm around the operation area and limb rigidity occurred and renal tubules full of myoglobin casts were observed by microscopy. Ultrastructural changes in the skeletal muscles and the myocardium were detected by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Genetic analysis discl

Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is being extensively used by dentists and dental specialists. Although the advantages of using this modality are enormous, with information comes responsibility. Most dental clinicians are not maxillofacial radiologists and are generally not familiar with interpretation of anatomy and pathosis in the head-and-neck area outside their immediate area of clinical interest. This leaves a larger part of extragnathic anatomy unassessed in a CBCT volume that is prescribed for specific dental diagnosis and treatment planning. This is critical because literature show

Agnathia-otocephaly, a rare, sporadic and lethal malformation, is characterized by microstomia (small mouth), aglossia (absence of the tongue), agnathia (absence of the lower jaw) and abnormally positioned ears. It is a principal anomaly derived from the first pharyngeal arch as a consequence of failed mesenchymal migration of the maxillary prominence and atrophy in the development of the mandibular prominences. Unfortunately, these patients have poor prognoses and may succumb to death shortly after birth due to respiratory problems if appropriate airway management is not implemented. Difficul

A benign osteogenic tumor made up of mature, well-differentiated bone tissue is called an osteoma. Jaw solitary peripheral osteomas are an uncommon occurrence. The mandible is affected more frequently than the maxilla, and the lingual side of the body, the angle, and the inferior border of the jaw are the sites of highest preference. Males are more likely than females to be impacted by osteomas, which can strike at any age. Patients with osteomas should be considered to have Gardner syndrome. This condition includes many embedded or supernumerary teeth, skeletal abnormalities such as osteoma a

Glossodynia is chronic pain localized around the tongue, with no perceivable organic abnormalities. In the fields of oral and maxillofacial surgery, it is categorized as an oral psychosomatic disease. In contrast, psychiatric nosology classifies glossodynia as a pain disorder among somatoform disorders, per the DSM-IV. The patient was a 71-year-old woman who developed symptoms of glossodynia, specifically a sore tongue. In the decade before she presented to us, she had had bizarre symptoms of oral cenesthopathy such as the sensation that her teeth had become 'limp and floppy' and that she need

OSAS, a common cause of disrupted sleep and EDS, result from repetitive closure of the upper airway during sleep. It probably represents the most severe syndrome related to obstruction of the upper airway; less severe forms include UARS, a syndrome characterized by the need for increased effort to breath but no prominent apneas or hypopneas, and primary snoring. Initial clues to the presence of OSAS and related disorders are derived from the history and include loud snoring, EDS or insomnia, and witnessed apneas. Some patients, especially women, may complain mostly of tiredness or fatigue, and

BACKGROUND: Although considerable progress has been made in the last 30 years in the treatment of cleft palate (CP), a multidisciplinary approach combining examinations by a paediatrician, maxillofacial surgeon, otolaryngologist and speech and language pathologist followed by surgical operation is still required. In this work, we performed an observational cross-sectional study to determine whether the CP grade or number of ventilation tubes received was associated with tympanic membrane abnormalities, hearing loss or speech outcomes.
METHODS: Otologic, audiometric, tympanometric and speech e

Domestic rabbits are increasing in popularity as household pets; therefore, veterinarians need to be familiar with the most common diseases afflicting rabbits including dental disease. Current diagnostic approaches include gross oral examination, endoscopic oral examination, skull radiography, and computed tomography (CT). Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), a new oral and maxillofacial imaging modality that has the capability to produce high-resolution images, has not yet been described for use in evaluating dental disease in rabbits. A total of 15 client-owned rabbits had CBCT, oral examin
