Race and Ethnicity, Hypertension, and Neuroimaging Markers of Brain Aging: A Causal Mediation Analysis in the HABS-HD Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The mechanisms underlying racial/ethnic differences in dementia incidence and pathology are multifactorial, and hypertension represents an actionable target for reducing these differences. We aimed to estimate the extent to which controlling for hypertension mediates racial/ethnic inequities in neuroimaging markers of brain aging. METHODS: The Health and Aging Brain Study-Health Disparities cohort is a highly phenotyped, racially and ethnically diverse cohort of cognitive aging. We used marginal structural models with inverse probability weights to estimate total an

Gender-specific associations between sexual compulsivity, sexual functioning and sexual satisfaction: a mediation analysis in an Iranian community sample.

BACKGROUND: Compulsive sexual behaviour disorder is recognised as a mental health disorder, characterised by the inability to control impulses and repetitive sexual behaviours, and is often associated with reduced sexual functioning and satisfaction. However, few studies have examined the associations between sexual compulsivity, sexual functioning and sexual satisfaction in non-Western populations, particularly with a gender perspective. METHODS: This study aimed to examine gender-specific patterns of these relationships in a community-based Iranian sample. Data were collected from 705 parti

The Role of Engagement in Virtual Reality to Enhance Emotional Well-Being in Breast Cancer Patients: A Mediation Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Virtual reality (VR) has garnered increasing attention in oncology due to its potential to enhance patient care by alleviating anxiety and emotional distress. The present work evaluates the hypothesis proposed by a recent theoretical model that engagement and the sense of presence are key mediators that impact the degree of beneficial effects that VR may have on the emotional well-being of breast cancer patients. METHODS: This study draws on data from three previous studies comprising 156 breast cancer patients. The psychological variables of well-being studied included emotiona

Identifying a proteomics signature of cognitive impairment and dementia in blood and cerebrospinal fluid through a mediation analysis framework.

This study aimed to identify CSF and plasma proteins that mediate the association between age and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease using mediation analysis. By focusing on proteins significantly associated in both CSF and plasma, we sought to identify biomarkers accessible for clinical applications. Proteomic measurements were obtained from CSF and plasma from a cohort of cognitively normal and MCI patients at the Johns Hopkins Alzheimer's Disease Research Center using Olink Proximity Extension Assay technology. Mediation effects were estimated using single- and multiple…

Sensory Responsiveness, Sexual Mindful Awareness, and Sexual Satisfaction Among Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse: A Cross-Sectional Mediation Analysis.

Previous studies have demonstrated that a history of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) is associated with reduced sexual satisfaction among adult survivors. Recent studies have suggested that survivors of traumatic experiences may display sensory modulation dysfunction, manifested as either over- or under-responsiveness to sensory stimuli. In this study we examined a moderated mediation model according to which: a) the effect of history of CSA on adult sexual satisfaction would be mediated by both high and low sensory responsiveness, and b) these mediation effects would be moderated by sexual mindf

Immunosenescence-related T cell phenotypes, structural brain imaging, and cognitive impairment in patients with schizophrenia: a moderated mediation analysis.

Cognitive impairment is a core characteristic of schizophrenia. Immunosenescence has been consistently implicated in the cognitive dysfunction observed in neurodegenerative diseases, but how it may relate to cognitive deficits in schizophrenia is still unclear. We explored the associations between immunosenescence and cognitive impairment in patients with schizophrenia (SCZ, n = 65) and healthy controls (HCs, n = 39). Immunosenescence markers were assessed by flow cytometry and included the percentage of naïve or memory T cell subsets labeled by CD4+/CD8+, CD45RA+(naïve)/CD45RO (memory), or CD
