Health literacy: a new challenge for laboratory medicine.

Poor health literacy and inappropriate test prescribing hamper the value of laboratory medicine. The disintermediation between test producers and interpreters may happen both in Point of Care Tests, where doctor mediation is provided, but laboratory expert supervision is not, and in Direct to Consumer Testing, where no medical mediation is provided at all. In these cases, the respect for patient's autonomy must not preclude the principles of non-maleficence (as an individual concern) and justice (as a societal concern), as wrong test interpretation can generate confusion, anxiety, inappropriat

Effectiveness of interprofessional education for medical and nursing professionals and students on interprofessional educational outcomes: A systematic review.

AIM AND BACKGROUND: Patient safety is a global health priority as unsafe care is a principal cause of death and disability. Ineffective interprofessional communication and collaboration among nursing and medical professionals and students contribute to unsafe practices. Interprofessional education provides opportunities to strengthen nurse-physician collaboration and enhance patient care. However, there is inconclusive evidence regarding interprofessional education effectiveness. This review aims to systematically evaluate interprofessional education effectiveness for nursing and medical profe

Evaluating the introduction of a practical thyroid ultrasound teaching session for medical students.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The use of thyroid ultrasound is gaining in popularity at postgraduate level. However, it has not been broadly incorporated into the UK undergraduate medical curriculum. Thyroid ultrasound can help augment students understanding of both anatomy and endocrinology. We aimed to embed a hands-on thyroid ultrasound practical teaching session as part of the QUB (Queen's University Belfast) 3rd year medical students' endocrine and diabetes rotation. Students completed a questionnaire on the effectiveness of the teaching. METHODS: Fifty 3rd year medical students completed a quest

Patients Decision Aid System Based on FHIR Profiles.

Patients are becoming more and more involved in clinical decision-making process. Several factors support this process. Advances in omics allows individualization of diagnosis and treatment. Patient awareness and easy availability of data on the Internet allows patients to become informed decision makers when it comes even to disease management. Mass media emphasize the issue of medical errors, making patients demanding for quality in medical care. In some healthcare settings, patents face a problem of interpreting medical data and making decisions on treatment tactics without having a doctor,

Lost in Translation: Interprofessional Variability in Understanding Pro Re Nata (PRN) Prescribing in Geriatric Practice-A Prospective Observational Study.

Background/Objectives: Medication safety is a critical concern in older adults due to age-related vulnerability, multimorbidity, and polypharmacy. Pro Re Nata (PRN, "as needed") prescribing is common in geriatric care but may be interpreted inconsistently across healthcare professionals, potentially increasing the risk of medication errors. This study aimed to evaluate PRN prescribing patterns in hospitalized older adults and assess interprofessional perceptions of the clarity and appropriateness of PRN prescribing for conditions. Methods: We conducted a prospective, single-day observational s

Enhancing medical students' proficiency in coping with chronic health conditions - accounts of a poetic approach to learning in type 2 diabetes clinical simulation.

BACKGROUND: Managing Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in Primary Health Care requires not only clinical accuracy but also humanistic and reflective capacities. Simulation-based education that integrates theatrical and humanistic elements may foster these competencies. This study explores how a clinical simulation module shaped medical students' awareness of their role in chronic care, drawing on Balint's psychodynamic perspective and Aristotelian poetics. METHODS: A qualitative study was conducted during a T2DM simulation module with fourth-year medical students. Eighteen simulation sessions were obs

How Does Medical Artificial Intelligence Revolutionize Physician Productivity?

This study examines the impact of medical artificial intelligence (AI) on physician workload and the quality of patient care. A meta-analysis of empirical studies found that AI significantly reduces physician workload and diagnostic time by automating repetitive interpretation and documentation processes, freeing clinicians to focus solely on patients. Automated generative AI-based electronic medical record systems reduce documentation time by approximately 40%, while voice recognition and AI scribing technologies reduce patient charting time by 28.8%. This reduces administrative burden, a maj

A Longitudinal Study on the Self-Reported Confidence of Medicine Interns Regarding Interpreting Chest Radiographs and Electrocardiograms, Performing Procedures, and Communicating With Patients' Families.

Background Gaining confidence in the performance of basic medical procedures and patient communication is integral to resident training. Research suggests that residents tend to exhibit more confidence over the course of their training, but findings have been mixed regarding different competency domains. Furthermore, changes in confidence throughout the intern year of residency remain underexplored. Objective This study aimed to assess changes during the intern year in self-reported confidence in chest radiograph interpretation, electrocardiogram (EKG) interpretation, basic procedures, and com

Design and validation of a prehospital stroke scale to predict large arterial occlusion: the rapid arterial occlusion evaluation scale.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: We aimed to develop and validate a simple prehospital stroke scale to predict the presence of large vessel occlusion (LVO) in patients with acute stroke. METHODS: The Rapid Arterial oCclusion Evaluation (RACE) scale was designed based on the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) items with a higher predictive value of LVO on a retrospective cohort of 654 patients with acute ischemic stroke: facial palsy (scored 0-2), arm motor function (0-2), leg motor function (0-2), gaze (0-1), and aphasia or agnosia (0-2). Thereafter, the RACE scale was validated prospe

[Practical guide to the examination and interpretation of genital lesions of minor female victims of sexual assault].

Through a comprehensive review of the literature on sexual assault, the authors propose to clarify the different stages of the exam and help the practitioner to the forensic interpretation of lesions. The authors describe the basic principles that make consensus in how to interview victims in order to increase the reliability of the information collected. The various medical data that must be collected allowing to guide diagnosis (urogenital symptoms, sexual behaviour disorder) or facilitate the interpretation of lesions (age of puberty, use of tampons…) are specified as well as the different

Gabapentinoid-associated fatalities in forensic practice: An autopsy-based retrospective study.

Gabapentinoids are increasingly encountered in medico-legal death investigations, yet their role in fatal outcomes remains difficult to interpret when evaluated in isolation from contextual and toxicological complexity. This autopsy-based retrospective study examined deaths attributed to pregabalin and/or gabapentin intoxication within a national forensic board system, focusing specifically on cases interpreted in the context of non-medical use and polydrug involvement. Cases were identified through systematic review of board-level expert opinion files, and demographic characteristics, clinica

Healthcare providers' use and acceptance of translation technologies in multilingual healthcare settings: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Language barriers remain a major challenge to equitable healthcare delivery. While qualified interpreters are considered the preferred standard, their availability is often limited. Translation technologies are therefore increasingly used in practice. However, quantitative evidence on how healthcare providers use these tools, how they evaluate them, and which factors are associated with their acceptance remains limited. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among healthcare and psychosocial service providers across a range of clinical settings. Inferential analyse

Escalating Concerns in Paediatric Hospital Care: A Qualitative Study of Involvement, Support and Empowerment of Families From Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Backgrounds.

BACKGROUND: Families frequently recognise early signs of deterioration in their children. In English-centric environments, families from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds face challenges in escalating concerns in hospital because of language barriers, limited health literacy, uncertainty about escalation pathways, and variable staff responsiveness. Although digital approaches may support communication, it remains unclear whether they address the wider organisational conditions required for equitable escalation of care. OBJECTIVE: This study explored hospital experiences

A novel approach for the automated segmentation and volume quantification of cardiac fats on computed tomography.

The deposits of fat on the surroundings of the heart are correlated to several health risk factors such as atherosclerosis, carotid stiffness, coronary artery calcification, atrial fibrillation and many others. These deposits vary unrelated to obesity, which reinforces its direct segmentation for further quantification. However, manual segmentation of these fats has not been widely deployed in clinical practice due to the required human workload and consequential high cost of physicians and technicians. In this work, we propose a unified method for an autonomous segmentation and quantification
