BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment is a recognized long-term complication of anti-NMDAR encephalitis, but its pooled magnitude, domain specificity, and time course have not been systematically quantified.
OBJECTIVE: To quantify pooled global cognitive and verbal episodic memory impairment in convalescent anti-NMDAR encephalitis relative to healthy comparators, and to assess whether impairment magnitude changes with time since disease onset.
METHODS: We systematically reviewed observational studies assessing standardized cognitive outcomes in adults with cell-based-assay-confirmed anti-NMDAR en

Despite distinct classes of psychoactive drugs producing putatively unique states of consciousness, there is surprising overlap in terms of their effects on episodic memory and cognition more generally. Episodic memory is supported by multiple subprocesses that have been mostly overlooked in psychopharmacology and could differentiate drug classes. Here, we reanalyzed episodic memory confidence ratings from 10 previously published data sets (28 drug conditions total) using signal detection models to estimate two conscious states involved in episodic memory and one consciously controlled metacog

INTRODUCTION: Free and Cued Selective Reminding Test (FCSRT) performance identifies patients with preclinical disease at elevated risk for developing Alzheimer's dementia, predicting diagnosis better than other memory tests.
METHODS: Based on literature mapping FCSRT performance to clinical outcomes and biological markers, and on longitudinal preclinical data from the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging, we developed the Stages of Objective Memory Impairment (SOMI) model. Five sequential stages of episodic memory decline are defined by Free Recall (FR) and Total Recall (TR) score ranges and

How do we know what sort of people we are? Do we reflect on specific past instances of our own behaviour, or do we just have a general idea? Previous work has emphasized the role of personal semantic memory (general autobiographical knowledge) in how we assess our own personality traits. Using a standardized trait empathy questionnaire, we show in four experiments that episodic autobiographical memory (memory for specific personal events) is associated with people's judgments of their own trait empathy. Specifically, neurologically healthy young adults rated themselves as more empathic on ques

Insulin resistance, a major component of metabolic syndrome (MetS), is involved in phosphorylated tau and beta amyloid buildup, linking MetS to neurodegenerative processes, e.g., Alzheimer's disease. One of the initial signs of neurodegeneration, in diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, is olfactory dysfunction. Accordingly, in previous reports we found that high carbohydrate diet based on 30% sucrose in drinking water, increased visceral fat and insulin resistance, leading to an augment of oxidative stress and reduced brain energy metabolism, upregulating amyloidogenic genes (APP and

SPTAN1 spectrinopathies refer to a group of rare, inherited diseases associated with damage to non-erythrocytic α-II spectrin (α-II). They are linked to a range of mild to severe neuropathologies of the central and peripheral nervous systems, such as early infantile epileptic encephalopathy type 5, cerebellar ataxia, inherited peripheral neuropathy, and spastic paraplegia. Modeling human SPTAN1 encephalopathies in laboratory animals has been challenging partially because no haploinsufficiency-related phenotypes unfold in heterozygous Spna2 deficient mice nor stable transgenic lines of mice mim

BACKGROUND: Diabetes increases the risk for cognitive decline, but the mechanisms behind this association remain unknown. Impaired early insulin secretion in elderly men and insulin resistance, both of which are pathophysiological features of type 2 diabetes, have previously been linked to Alzheimer's disease.
OBJECTIVE: To examine if the early insulin response to oral glucose load predicts cognitive performance after 10 years in men and women aged 45-74 years.
METHODS: This study was based on a subpopulation of the Health 2000 Survey, a Finnish nationwide, population-based health examinatio

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Genetic factors play an important role in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and cognitive aging. However, it is unclear whether risk loci identified in European ancestry (EA) populations have similar effects in other groups, such as South Asians.
DESIGN: We investigated the allelic distribution and cognitive associations of 56 known AD risk single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) identified from three EA genome-wide association studies (EA-GWASs) in a South Asian population. Single SNP and genetic risk score (GRS) associations with measures of episodic memory were assessed.

BACKGROUND: Semantic and short-term episodic memory are impaired in some brain disorders including Alzheimer's disease.
OBJECTIVE: Development and validation of an almost self-administered, but cognitively demanding four-minute test identifying very mild cognitive impairment (vMCI).
METHODS: The innovative hedgehog PICture Naming and Immediate Recall (PICNIR) consisted of two parts. The first task was to write down the names of 20 black-and-white pictures to evaluate long-term semantic memory and language. The second task involves immediate recall and writing the names of as many previously

INTRODUCTION: Deficits in episodic memory following traumatic brain injury (TBI) are common and affect independence in activities of daily living. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and concurrent cognitive training may contribute to improve episodic memory in patients with TBI. Although previous studies have shown the potential of tDCS to improve cognition, the benefits of the tDCS applied simultaneously to cognitive training in participants with neurological disorders are inconsistent. This study aims to (1) investigate whether active tDCS combined with computer-assisted cognitiv

OBJECTIVE: Dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis has been implicated in the pathophysiology of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and its associated cognitive deficits. However, the role of the cortisol/dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) ratio, a functional index of the catabolic/anabolic balance, remains poorly characterized in the early stages of the illness. This study aimed to investigate the association between this neuroendocrine marker and executive function in a rigorously defined cohort of drug-naive, first-episode OCD patients.
METHODS: Seventy-five drug-naive,

BACKGROUND: Ageing is highly associated with cognitive decline and modifiable risk factors such as diet are believed to protect against this process. Specific dietary components and in particular, (poly)phenol-rich fruits such as berries have been increasingly recognised for their protection against age-related neurodegeneration. However, the impact of cranberries on cognitive function and neural functioning in older adults remains unclear.
DESIGN: A 12-week parallel randomised placebo-controlled trial of freeze-dried cranberry powder was conducted in 60 older adults aged between 50 and 80 ye

INTRODUCTION: Bipolar disorder (BD) is often accompanied by trait-related cognitive impairments, but it is unclear which neurocircuitry abnormalities give rise to these impairments and whether neurocircuitry differences are exacerbated with illness progression. This longitudinal fMRI study of recently diagnosed BD patients investigates whether aberrant working memory (WM) related activity in the cognitive control network is accentuated by new affective episodes.
METHODS: Forty-seven recently diagnosed BD patients in full or partial remission and 38 healthy controls were assessed with neurocog

Episodic memory is the type of memory that allows the recollection of personal experiences containing information on what has happened and, also, where and when it happened. Because of its sensitivity to neurodegenerative diseases and the aging of the brain, it is considered a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease dementia (ADD). The objective of the present study was to examine episodic memory in amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) and ADD. Patients with the diagnosis of early aMCI, late aMCI, and mild ADD were evaluated using the Doors and People tool which consists of four subtests examinin

Identification of biological changes underlying the early symptoms of Alzheimer's disease (AD) will help to identify and stage individuals prior to symptom onset. The limbic system, which supports episodic memory and is impaired early in AD, is a primary target. In this study, brain metabolism and microstructure evaluated by high field (7 Tesla) proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) were evaluated in the limbic system of eight individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), nine with AD, and sixteen normal elderly controls (NEC). Left hippocampal

The depression, anxiety and physiosomatic symptoms (DAPS) of schizophrenia are associated with negative symptoms and changes in tryptophan catabolite (TRYCAT) patterning. The aim of this study is to delineate the associations between DAPS and psychosis, hostility, excitation, and mannerism (PHEM) symptoms, cognitive tests as measured using the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease (CERAD) and IgA/IgM responses to TRYCATs. We included 40 healthy controls and 80 participants with schizophrenia. Depression and anxiety symptoms were measured with The Hamilton Depression (HAM-D

Identifying vulnerability factors for relapse of depression is essential in planning preventive interventions. Emotional face processing in major depression (MDD) shows promise as a potential cognitive marker for depression. The current study investigates how working memory (WM) load in face processing relates to rumination and new episodes of MDD in a novel explorative paradigm. It was expected that history of MDD is associated with reduction of the ability to process sad stimuli in high WM load conditions and reduction of the ability to process happy stimuli in low WM conditions. It was furt

BACKGROUND: Screening procedures for early Alzheimer's disease (AD) trials seek to efficiently identify participants who fulfill clinical and biomarker criteria for AD and enrich for those most likely to experience significant clinical progression during the study. Episodic memory performance is often assessed in screening, but the utility of different memory tests for optimizing screening efficiency and/or rates of clinical progression remains uncertain.
OBJECTIVES: Cross-study comparisons of the effects of inclusion criteria based on performance on the Free and Cued Selective Reminding Test

I strongly support Barzykowski and Moulin in their proposal that common retrieval mechanisms can lead to distinct phenomenological memory experiences. I emphasize the importance of one of these mechanisms, namely the attribution system. Neuropsychological studies should help clarifying the role of these retrieval mechanisms, notably in cases of medial temporal-lobe lesions and cases of dementia.

Empathy, the capacity to understand and share others' emotions, relies on two complementary components: cognitive empathy, involving perspective-taking and inferential understanding, and affective empathy, grounded in bodily resonance with others' states. Both depend on the ability to maintain a clear boundary between self and other because, when this is blurred, individuals might experience emotional contagion, a simpler form of emotional engagement with the other. Evidence suggests that autobiographical memory supports cognitive empathy by enabling individuals to simulate others' experiences
