Neurosyphilis in newly admitted psychiatric patients: three case reports.

BACKGROUND: Neurosyphilis, also known as "general paresis of the insane," at one time accounted for a large portion of admissions to state psychiatric facilities. With the introduction of antibiotics, neurosyphilis is now considered very rare. METHOD: Chart review was performed on patients diagnosed with neurosyphilis who were admitted to a state psychiatric hospital in Raleigh, N.C., during 2002. RESULTS: We identified 3 cases of confirmed neurosyphilis, representing 0.1% of adult admissions, diagnosed in newly admitted psychiatric patients. None of the patients were immunocompromised. Resp

Predictors of caregiver support intervention outcomes for refugees in Jordan: a three-path mediational study.

BACKGROUND: More evidence is needed for understanding how evidence-based psychological interventions work, especially when implemented by briefly trained non-professionals in low- and middle-income settings. The nine-session caregiver support intervention (CSI) is such an evidence-based intervention, aiming to improve parental wellbeing and parenting skills. Specifically, this study aims to assess if and how a set of quality of care indicators explain intervention outcomes amongst participants from refugee settlements in Jordan. METHODS: We conducted a three-path mediational model, wherein le

Nurses' perceptions of mental healthcare in primary-care settings in Kenya.

Kenya maintains an extraordinary treatment gap for mental health services because the need for and availability of mental health services are extraordinarily misaligned. One way to narrow the treatment gap is task-sharing, where specialists rationally distribute tasks across the health system, with many responsibilities falling upon frontline health workers, including nurses. Yet, little is known about how nurses perceive task-sharing mental health services. This article investigates nurses' perceptions of mental healthcare delivery within primary-care settings in Kenya. We conducted a cross-s

Construct validity of dimensions of adaptive behavior: a multitrait-multimethod evaluation.

The construct validity of four dimensions of adaptive and maladaptive behavior was investigated using the multitrait-multimethod matrix procedure of Campbell and Fiske (1959). Measures of four traits--cognitive competence, social competence, social maladaption, and personal maladaption--were obtained on a sample of 157 persons with moderate, severe, or profound mental retardation using each of three methods of measurement--standardized assessment instrument, day shift staff ratings, and evening shift staff ratings. Applying the Campbell and Fiske rules of thumb and recently proposed structural

Collaborating With Service Users to Select Psychiatry Residents Committed to Health Equity and Social Justice.

PROBLEM: Advocates have called for health services to be delivered equitably to all. Academic psychiatry must play a role in this work, given its history of creating and perpetuating the marginalization of people experiencing mental health issues. While medical educators have started teaching concepts such as structural competency and cultural safety, careful consideration of who enters the medical workforce and what values they bring is also important. APPROACH: The authors report on the first 5 years (2016-2021) of a collaboration with individuals who have used mental health or addiction se

The Italian Version of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Development of Clinical Skills Scale (LGBT-DOCSS): Validation Among Mental Health Professionals.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals experience substantial health inequalities, and clinical competence among healthcare providers is a key determinant of equitable care. The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Development of Clinical Skills Scale (LGBT-DOCSS) is a validated instrument for assessing SGM-related clinical competence, but no Italian version has been available. This study aimed to translate, adapt, and validate the Italian LGBT-DOCSS among mental health professionals. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was administered to clinicians and trainees ac

[Artificial intelligence in sychotherapy-Attitudes and competencies of medical and psychological psychotherapists].

BACKGROUND: Arificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly becoming established in medicine, such as therapeutic chatbots in mental health. Despite this, knowledge about clinicians' views and skills is lacking. This study examines the attitudes toward AI and competencies of German physicians (ÄPT), psychotherapists (PPT) and psychotherapists in training (PiA) for the first time. METHOD: Cross-sectional study with online survey (June-July 2025) of 335 participants, recruited through professional associations and chambers. Attitudes were assessed using the AIAS‑4 scale, competencies using the MAIL

Suggestibility and confabulation among individuals with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder: A review for criminal justice, forensic mental health, and legal interviewers.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) are conditions arising from prenatal alcohol exposure which results in a range of neurodevelopmental deficits in areas including cognition, memory, language, executive functioning, emotional regulation, and adaptive functioning. Deficits in various neurodevelopmental areas can range from mild to severe, depending on many factors including the quantity and timing of alcohol exposure during the prenatal development period. During interviews in criminal justice, forensic mental health, and legal contexts (e.g., criminal investigations, cross examination, vi

Psychopathic traits and theory of mind task performance: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

This meta-analysis aims to examine the relationship between psychopathic traits and theory of mind (ToM), which is classically and broadly defined as competency in representing and attributing mental states such as emotions, intentions, and beliefs to others. Our search strategy gathered 142 effect sizes from 42 studies, with a total sample size of 7463 participants. Random effects models were used to analyze the data. Our findings suggested that psychopathic traits are associated with impaired ToM task performance. This relationship was not moderated by factors such as age, population, psycho

Challenges of Providing Palliative Care to a Patient With Learning Disability: A Case Study From United Kingdom General Practice.

Palliative care is a complex and challenging field in the healthcare profession. In the United Kingdom (UK), palliative care provision is part of everyday work for General Practitioners (GPs). The UK General Practice Curriculum includes palliative care as a core competency to be achieved to become a fully certified GP/family physician. The various stages of a patient's journey from getting a life-limiting diagnosis to breaking bad news, and dealing with the treatments and resulting complications need active involvement from the patient and their loved ones with healthcare professionals at all

Fathers' postnatal distress, parenting self-efficacy, later parenting behavior, and children's emotional-behavioral functioning: A longitudinal study.

Fathers' postnatal distress has been associated with subsequent emotional and behavioral problems for children; however, the mechanisms by which this occurs have received less attention. One potential pathway could be via the negative effects that father mental health problems and parenting self-efficacy (PSE) in the postnatal period have on later parenting behaviors. Using a nationally representative cohort of Australian father-child dyads (N = 3,741), the long-term relationships between fathers' psychological distress and PSE in the postnatal period, parenting behavior when children were age

Student-led occupational performance coaching in a university setting.

INTRODUCTION: University students are at a high risk for mental health difficulties. Occupational performance coaching is an action-oriented and strengths-based approach that can help clients set and accomplish personally valued goals. We carried out a pilot project to evaluate a tele-rehabilitation occupational performance coaching service for university students within an occupational therapy fieldwork placement. METHOD: A pretest post-test design was used. Severity of symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress and goal achievement were measured before and after the intervention and semi-st

Evaluating usability, adherence and clinical benefit of a new digital heath application in rheumatoid arthritis: a pilot feasibility study.

Digital health interventions hold promise for improving self-management in chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The Fimo Health App was developed to support patients with RA using a multidimensional approach combining educational modules, symptom tracking, and mind–body exercises. This pilot feasibility study aimed to evaluate the usability, adherence, and potential clinical benefit of a prototype version of the app in patients with RA. A further objective was to explore patient subgroups that may particularly gain from the intervention. In a single-arm pilot trial,

The auditory-verbal hallucinations of Welsh-English bilingual people.

OBJECTIVES: Psychological models of voice-hearing propose that auditory-verbal hallucinations occur when inner speech is attributed to a source external to the self. Approximately half of the world's population is multilingual, and the extent to which they use a second language for inner speech depends on their experience and competency in it. Bilingualism therefore provides a natural window into the processes operating in auditory-verbal hallucinations, but no systematic study of voice-hearing in bilinguals has hitherto been conducted. DESIGN: A mixed-methods observational study of psychiatr

Policy Recommendations to Address Housing Shortages for People With Severe Mental Illness.

Affordable housing for persons with severe mental illness has never developed on the scale needed. Nearly one million individuals with mental illness are incarcerated, homeless, couch surfing, or cycling among institutions and unstable housing options across the United States. The three legs of the stool of housing development for persons with disabilities-capital to acquire or build, operations to support rent payments, and services to support tenants-exist to a small degree in a single federal housing program-the 811 program-which has fallen short in its impact on persons with mental illness

The first part of the series of three articles on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in Court to appear in the journal reviews the history of the construct of PTSD and its presentation in the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition; American Psychiatric Association, 2013) and the ICD-11 (International Classification of Diseases, 11th Edition; World Health Organization, 2018). There are 20 symptoms of PTSD in the DSM-5. PTSD symptoms are arranged into a four-cluster model, which has received partial support in the literature. Other four-factor models have b

[Developmental aspects in expert testimony for juvenile court].

The history of German legislation resulting in the developmental orientation of juvenile court law (JCL) led to setting the minimum age of criminal responsibility at the age of 14, which places Germany within the average range compared to other EU countries, even though most skills regarding the discernment of right- or wrong-doing are developed in earlier stages of life. The requirement put by section sign 3 JCL that legal discernment be emotionally grounded and the necessity to explore context factors (family or group, specific situation) make psychiatric evaluation of adolescents in court a

Spiritual and religious competence in psychotherapy training.

Responsiveness to clients' spirituality and/or religion (S/R) is a core dimension of multicultural and clinical competence. S/R might support or hinder clients' well-being and recovery from mental health conditions that might lead them to seek psychotherapy. Further, clients from across the spectrum of S/R diversity often want therapists to attend to their spiritual and/or religious identities in the treatment process. However, many counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychologists, social workers, and other psychotherapy practitioners do not receive training in foundational knowledge,

Assessment of Intellectual Disability in Death Penalty Cases.

The U.S. Supreme Court's opinion in Hamm v. Smith addressed the assessment of intellectual disability in capital cases, focusing on how courts should evaluate multiple full-scale IQ scores in claims arising under Atkins v. Virginia, which barred the death penalty for defendants with intellectual disabilities. Although the court declined to establish a clear framework for weighing conflicting psychometric evidence, the decision highlights principles of psychological assessment that are frequently misunderstood in legal proceedings. This column examines the legal and psychometric issues presente
