[Mercury dynamics of several plants collected from the water-level fluctuation zone of the Three Gorges Reservoir area during flooding and its impact on water body].

Submerged plants are a major source for the abnormal elevation of methylmercury in reservoir. Several specific plants (Echinochloa crusgalli, Cynodondactylon and Corn stover) were collected and inundated in a simulated aquatic environment in the laboratory for investigating the mercury (Hg) dynamics in plants and the release process into water, aiming to find out the properties of Hg dynamics of plants under inundation conditions and its impact on water body in the Water-Level Fluctuation Zone of the Three Gorges Reservoir Area. The results showed that the contents of total mercury in several

Effect of divalent metals on Hg(II) uptake and methylation by bacteria.

The production of methylmercury by some bacteria is a key first step in the accumulation and biomagnification of this toxic substance in aquatic food webs, a major human health concern. By direct measurement of cellular Hg(II) uptake in model iron and sulfate reducing bacteria, we have observed that specific trace metals, such as Zn(II) and Cd(II), inhibit uptake and methylation in these organisms, whereas other metals, such as Ni(II), Co(II), or Fe(II), do not. The inhibition of Hg(II) methylation by Zn(II) was competitive in nature and related to the concentration of inorganically complexed

Toxicity reference values and tissue residue criteria for protecting avian wildlife exposed to methylmercury in China.

MeHg is the most biologically available and toxic from of mercury, and has the potential to bioaccumulate and biomagnify as it moves up the food chain. These characteristics result in MeHg exposure to avian wildlife at high trophic levels that can produce adverse effects. The toxicity of MeHg to birds was reviewed, and using available data, TRVs and TRCs were derived for protecting birds in China. The TRV and TRC values were based on concentrations of MeHg in diet (or fish tissue based) and tissues of birds. Two methods were applied to derive TRVs from concentrations in the diet or in tissues.

Methylmercury is the predominant form of mercury in bird eggs: a synthesis.

Bird eggs are commonly used in mercury monitoring programs to assess methylmercury contamination and toxicity to birds. However, only 6% of >200 studies investigating mercury in bird eggs have actually measured methylmercury concentrations in eggs. Instead, studies typically measure total mercury in eggs (both organic and inorganic forms of mercury), with the explicit assumption that total mercury concentrations in eggs are a reliable proxy for methylmercury concentrations in eggs. This assumption is rarely tested, but has important implications for assessing risk of mercury to birds. We condu

Mechanisms regulating mercury bioavailability for methylating microorganisms in the aquatic environment: a critical review.

Mercury is a potent neurotoxin for humans, particularly if the metal is in the form of methylmercury. Mercury is widely distributed in aquatic ecosystems as a result of anthropogenic activities and natural earth processes. A first step toward bioaccumulation of methylmercury in aquatic food webs is the methylation of inorganic forms of the metal, a process that is primarily mediated by anaerobic bacteria. In this Review, we evaluate the current state of knowledge regarding the mechanisms regulating microbial mercury methylation, including the speciation of mercury in environments where methyla

[Research on mercury methylation by Geobacter sulfurreducens and its influencing factors].

Mercury methylation by Geobacter sulfurreducens and the effects of environmental factors were studied under laboratory conditions. The results showed that G. sulfurreducens could grow well in the presence of low concentrations of mercuric chloride, but its growth was inhibited to a certain extent, mainly expressed in the prolonged lag phase. G. sulfurreducens could transform inorganic mercury into methylmercury, and this process was affected by many environmental factors. The efficiency of mercury methylation reached 38% under anaerobic conditions with 1 mg x L(-1) HgCl2 and 0.9% salinity at 3

Spatial distribution and speciation of mercury and methyl mercury in the surface water of East River (Dongjiang) tributary of Pearl River Delta, South China.

PURPOSE: The distribution and speciation of mercury in surface water of East River, Guangdong province, China were investigated. METHODS: All told 63 water samples were collected during a bi-weekly sampling campaign from July 15th to 26th, 2009. RESULTS: Total mercury (THg) concentrations in water samples ranged from 11 to 49 ng/L. Maximum levels of THg were measured in the lower reaches of East River, where it passes through a major industrial area adjacent to Dongguang city. Higher ratios of dissolved mercury (THg (aq)) in proportion to THg were restricted to the downstream section of East

Dietary selenium reduces retention of methyl mercury in freshwater fish.

Adverse effects from organic mercury transported along aquatic food chains are health issues in humans and other top predators. Methyl mercury in organisms at the lower food chain levels is eliminated slowly, and laboratory studies have not clarified the role of selenium in the retention of methyl mercury in fish. Here, we investigated the effects of dietary selenium on the retention of organic and inorganic mercury in freshwater fish. Addition of selenite to the food augmented elimination of methyl mercury (but not inorganic mercury) from goldfish Carassius auratus in a dose dependent manner;

Comparison of a toxicokinetic and a questionnaire-based approach to assess methylmercury intake in exposed individuals.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is a neurotoxic contaminant and one of the main sources of exposure in humans is seafood consumption. It is thus of interest to assess precisely MeHg exposure. The objective of this study was to estimate MeHg daily intake in exposed individuals using two different approaches, a food questionnaire and toxicokinetic modeling, and compare the complementary and use of each method. For this purpose, a group of 23 fishermen from northern Quebec provided blood and hair samples and answered a standard food questionnaire focusing on seafood consumption. A published and validated to

Hair methylmercury levels of mummies of the Aleutian Islands, Alaska.

Ancient human hair specimens can shed light on the extent of pre-historic exposures to methylmercury and provide valuable comparison data with current-day exposures, particularly for Indigenous Peoples who continue to rely upon local traditional food resources. Human hair from ancient Aleutian Island Native remains were tested for total and methylmercury (Hg, MeHg) and were radiocarbon dated. The remains were approximately 500 years old (1450 A.D.). For four adults, the mean and median total hair mercury concentration was 5.8 ppm (SD=0.9). In contrast, MeHg concentrations were lower with a mea

Rapid increases in mercury concentrations in the eggs of mallards fed methylmercury.

To determine how quickly breeding birds would have to feed in a mercury-contaminated area before harmful concentrations of mercury, as methylmercury, built up in their eggs, we fed female mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) a control diet or diets containing 0.5, 1, 2, 4, or 8 microg/g mercury (on what was close to a dry weight basis) as methylmercury chloride for 23 d. After 18 d on their respective mercury diets, the eggs of mallards fed 0.5, 1, 2, 4, or 8 microg/g mercury contained 97.8, 86.0, 89.9, 88.9, and 85.9%, respectively, of the peak concentrations reached after 23 d. Depending on the die

Thyroid hormones and methylmercury toxicity.

Thyroid hormones are essential for cellular metabolism, growth, and development. In particular, an adequate supply of thyroid hormones is critical for fetal neurodevelopment. Thyroid hormone tissue activation and inactivation in brain, liver, and other tissues is controlled by the deiodinases through the removal of iodine atoms. Selenium, an essential element critical for deiodinase activity, is sensitive to mercury and, therefore, when its availability is reduced, brain development might be altered. This review addresses the possibility that high exposures to the organometal, methylmercury (M

Methodological considerations regarding the use of inorganic 197Hg(II) radiotracer to assess mercury methylation potential rates in lake sediment.

Methodological considerations on the determination of benthic methyl-mercury (CH(3)Hg) production potentials were investigated on lake sediment, using (197)Hg radiotracer. Three methods to arrest bacterial activity were compared: flash freezing, thermal sterilization, and gamma-irradiation. Flash freezing showed similar CH(3)Hg recoveries as thermal sterilization, which was both 50% higher than the recoveries obtained with gamma-ray irradiation. No additional radiolabel was recovered in kill-control samples after an additional 24 or 65 h of incubation, suggesting that all treatments were effec

Recent advances in mercury speciation analysis with focus on spectrometric methods and enriched stable isotope applications.

This paper discusses some recent advances in spectrometric methods and approaches for mercury speciation analysis of environmental samples with focus on isotope dilution techniques for determination of mercury species' concentrations in gaseous samples and reaction rates in soils and sediments. Such analytical data is important inter alia in fundamental research on mercury biogeochemistry and for risk assessments of mercury-contaminated soils and sediments and for designing effective remedial actions. The paper describes how the use of enriched stable isotope tracers in mercury speciation anal

Influence of maternal stress on metal-induced pre- and postnatal effects in mammals: a review.

Studies in rodents have shown that, during pregnancy, maternal stress from restraint, noise, light, and heat among other factors may be associated with adverse effects on embryo/fetal and postnatal development. Moreover, it is also well known that exposure to certain metal levels during gestation can also cause maternal and developmental toxicity. Because potentially, pregnant women may be concurrently exposed to metals and various types of stress, the influence of maternal stress on the metal-induced adverse pre- and postnatal effects has been investigated for a number of elements. This influ

Nutritional factors may modify the toxic action of methyl mercury in fish-eating populations.

The historical record of clinical cases of methyl mercury poisoning dates back to the 19th century when the first chemical synthesis occurred. The potent fungicidal properties of both methyl and the closely related ethyl mercury compound were subsequently discovered, which led to widespread agricultural application for prevention of fungal infection in seed grain. Several catastrophic outbreaks of poisoning occurred in the mid-20th century when the treated seed grain was mistakenly used to prepare homemade bread. The largest outbreak took place in rural Iraq in the early 1970s. Human poisoning

A toxicokinetic model for predicting the tissue distribution and elimination of organic and inorganic mercury following exposure to methyl mercury in animals and humans. II. Application and validation of the model in humans.

The objective of this study was to develop a biologically based dynamical model describing the disposition kinetics of methyl mercury and its inorganic mercury metabolites in humans following different methyl mercury exposure scenarios. The model conceptual and functional representation was similar to that used for rats but relevant data on humans served to determine the critical parameters of the kinetic behavior. It was found that the metabolic rate of methyl mercury was on average 3 to 3.5 times slower in humans than in rats. Also, excretion rates of organic mercury from the whole body into
