Bone mineralization in childhood and adolescence.

Prevention of osteoporosis depends on establishing adequate peak bone mass in the first two decades of life. Achievement of this goal requires an understanding of factors that promote skeletal health. Genetic factors are important determinants of adult bone mass, but nonheritable variables, including body mass, calcium nutriture, sex steroids, and activity can strongly influence whether maximal bone mineral is achieved. Acquisition of bone mineral continues throughout childhood and adolescence, reaching a lifetime maximum in early adulthood. Adolescence is a particularly critical time for bone

Treatment of mineral disorders in cattle.

It is difficult to identify mineral deficiencies and even harder to predict their occurrence. The best indicators of a particular disorder are the characteristic clinical signs. In their absence, biochemical tests or well-designed and properly conducted dose-response field trials are the only sure ways of defining deficient states and assessing their functional and economic significance. This article identifies treatments of the main mineral disorders in cattle and preventive strategies to minimize their occurrence. Dietary manipulations or oral treatments are indicated for chronic primary def

Vitamin and mineral supplementation to athletes.

Vitamin and mineral supplements are frequently used by competitive and recreational athletes. Dietary deficiencies of most vitamins are not very common among athletes except in those who restrict their food intake in order to maintain body weight. Vitamins most likely to be deficient in the diet are folate, B6, B12, and E. Biochemical evidence of vitamin deficiencies in some athletes have been reported for thiamine, riboflavin, and B6. When the diet is deficient, vitamin supplements may improve performance but are not likely to be effective if the dietary intake is adequate. Some female athlet

Mineralization of carbofuran by a soil bacterium.

A bacterium, tentatively identified as an Arthrobacter sp., was isolated from flooded soil that was incubated at 35 degrees C and repeatedly treated with carbofuran (2,3-dihydro-2,2-dimethyl-7-benzofuranyl N-methylcarbamate). This bacterium exhibited an exceptional capacity to completely mineralize the ring-labeled C in carbofuran to CO(2) within 72 to 120 h in a mineral salts medium as a sole source of carbon and nitrogen under aerobic conditions. Mineralization was more rapid at 35 degrees C than at 20 degrees C. No degradation of carbofuran occurred even after prolonged incubation under ana

Mineral adequacy of vegetarian diets.

The bioavailability of a number of minerals may be altered by the special characteristics of vegetarian diets. Concern has centered on both inadequate and high dietary levels of specific minerals as well as reduced bioavailability because of a variety of dietary components. The possibility that plant-based diets may compromise mineral status is briefly reviewed for the following minerals: zinc, calcium, iron, manganese, selenium, and copper.

Mineral X disease interactions.

The ability of animals to cope with infection may be influenced by mineral nutrition, in particular Mg and P of the macroelements and Zn, Fe, Cu and Se of the trace elements. Deficiencies of Zn, Fe, Cu and Se have resulted in a lowered resistance to disease either through an impaired immune response or faulty leukocyte function. The role of Se in bactericidal action of the phagocytes is associated with oxidative functions believed important for killing phagocytized bacteria. The role of these and other essential elements in disease prevention is an important area of animal nutrition research.

Legionella pneumophila in coal miners.

Legionnaires' disease was diagnosed in three mineworkers at a colliery. Investigation of water samples from various sites at the colliery did not discover a source of the infection. Results of serological surveys undertaken on the workmates of the patients and other miners showed only one additional positive Legionella indirect fluorescent antibody test. There was, therefore, no justification for any alteration in the water supply or the ventilation at the colliery.

[Effect of antacids on mineral metabolism].

Side effects of antacid therapy are dose dependant and compound related. High dose antacid intake may lead to fluid retention in the body depending on the sodium content of the different antacid preparations. Sodium bicarbonate ingestion provokes metabolic alkalosis and alkaliuria, the "nonsystemic calcium and magnesium containing antacids" cause these changes too, but to a lower degree. Urinary pH elevation favours the precipitation of calcium and magnesium salts, predisposing to renal stone formation. In patients with renal insufficiency the calcium and magnesium absorption may lead rapidly

[Biological effect of mineral oils].

Literature on biological action of mineral oils used as coolants has been surveyed. The data indicate different biological action depending on the origin of fundamental materials and additives used to improve the functional quality. In industry mineral oils may adversely affect primarily the respiratory system and skin. Both investigations of mineral oil aerosols effects in animals and epidemiological examinations of workers exposed to oil mist urgently call for the reduction of oil concentrations in work environment. The irritating properties of oils and oil emulsions vary with quantitative--

Initiation and stages of mineralization in tympanosclerosis.

The ultrastructure of tympanosclerotic tissue is described with particular reference to the structure of matrix vesicles and calcospherules, often of intricate structure, and to their role in the induction of calcification. The vesicles formed by degenerating cells within the collagenous matrix or epithelium of the tympanosclerotic tissues are the primary site of calcification. The released spherules appear scattered throughout the collagenous layers, and form the organic basis of calcospherules. Through fusion larger aggregates are formed which lead to the development of macroscopically recog

Bone mineral content in epileptics.

The bone mineral content in the forearms was measured in 71 epileptics, admitted to an institution for epileptics. The mineral content was decreased in epileptics as compared with age-matched normal controls. The decrease was in the order of 10--15% except in the distal end of the forearm in women. Also, the strength of the hand and forearm was decreased by 1/3 and since there is a known relationship between strength and bone mineral content, the loss of bone mineral may be secondary to the loss of strength. Therefore, inactivity could be an important contributory factor to the bone mineral lo
