An animal model of granulomatous hypersensitivity has been developed, which reproduces some features of the pathologies of important chronic granulomatous disorders, including tuberculosis, tuberculoid leprosy, sarcoidosis, berylliosis, Crohn's disease, and sensitivity to zirconium. We examined the interactions of live and lysed spirochetes with innate immune cells. THP-1 monocytoid cells were activated to comparable extents by live Borrelia burgdorferi and by B. burgdorferi and Treponema pallidum lysates but were poorly activated by live T. pallidum. The pocked (pitted or vacuolated) erythrocyte count has become increasingly utilized as a simple inexpensive test of splenic reticuloendothelial function. Previous studies have demonstrated that congenitally athymic, nude mice are highly susceptible to infection with Mycobacterium leprae. The course of Pichinde virus infection in two strains of hamsters, LVG and MHA, was studied by sequential frozen-section immunofluorescence and light and electron microscopy.
