Comparison of three methods of teaching women how to perform breast self-examination.

This paper presents results from an experimental study designed to evaluate the relative effectiveness of three methods of teaching women how to do breast self-examination (BSE). Frequency of BSE, confidence in examination performance, proficiency of BSE technique, and lump detection performance were the main outcome variables assessed. The three training methods compared in this study were provision of a pamphlet describing how to do BSE, having women view a videotape depicting proper performance of BSE, and having women practice doing BSE on a life-like breast model. Results showed that pass

Sex role stereotypes: developmental aspects and early intervention.

A total of 122 children participated in 2 experiments that examined the utility of sumbolic modeling stimuli in modifying sex role stereotypes. Results disclosed that, while some aspects of sex role stereotypes are present at age 3, other aspects are acquired between the third and fourth year of life. Additionally, males were found to exhibit more stereotyped responses than females. As predicted, brief presentations of illustrated stories involving egalitarian sex role models reduced stereotypic thinking. Interaction effects revealed that an egalitarian literature presentation was more effecti

Feasibility study of a sensor-to-segment calibration method to enhance upper limb motion analysis using an IMU-based system for clinical and home environments.

Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) represent a valid alternative to standard clinical assessment methods, such as clinical scales, for evaluating upper limb kinematics. A key aspect of utilizing IMUs effectively is ensuring precise sensor-to-segment calibration, which accounts for the relative orientation between the sensor and the attached body segment. This calibration is crucial to obtain accurate results. Although reliable calibration methods are available, their application in clinical and home environments remains challenging due to their complexity. This study aimed to validate a picture

Time points or plot points - Are movies processed according to their temporal duration or their underlying content structure?

Movie-watching studies have shown that specific cortical areas are tuned to stimulus segments of certain durations. However, increases in stimulus duration naturally co-occur with increases in content complexity. This study aimed to disentangle the effects of stimulus content and duration to determine whether hierarchically nested, complex, naturalistic stimuli, like movies, are processed primarily on the basis of their underlying temporal or content structure. To this end, 48 participants watched six equal-length blocks of movie frames presented at a constant frame rate in an fMRI experiment.

Sisterhood predicts similar neural processing of a film.

Relationships between humans are essential for how we see the world. Using fMRI, we explored the neural basis of homophily, a sociological concept that describes the tendency to bond with similar others. Our comparison of brain activity between sisters, friends and acquaintances while they watched a movie, indicate that sisters' brain activity is more similar than that of friends and friends' activity is more similar than that of acquaintances. The increased similarity in brain activity measured as inter-subject correlation (ISC) was found both in higher-order brain areas including the default

Generalizable dimensions of human cortical auditory processing of speech in natural soundscapes: A data-driven ultra high field fMRI approach.

Speech comprehension in natural soundscapes rests on the ability of the auditory system to extract speech information from a complex acoustic signal with overlapping contributions from many sound sources. Here we reveal the canonical processing of speech in natural soundscapes on multiple scales by using data-driven modeling approaches to characterize sounds to analyze ultra high field fMRI recorded while participants listened to the audio soundtrack of a movie. We show that at the functional level the neuronal processing of speech in natural soundscapes can be surprisingly low dimensional in

Using the trauma film paradigm to explore interpersonal processes after trauma exposure.

OBJECTIVE: The present study sought to examine ways in which social support might influence trauma symptoms using a variation of the trauma film paradigm. METHOD: Sixty-seven undergraduate female students in romantic relationships were randomized to watch a stressful film clip depicting a sexual assault, either in the presence (PP) or absence (PA) of their romantic partner. RESULTS: Analyses showed that the PP condition experienced more intrusive memories of the film than the PA condition. In addition, participants in the PP condition whose romantic partner reported low relationship trust ha

Sexual health of adults working in pornographic films.

We report the frequency of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) diagnosed in performers in the adult pornographic film industry. Over a 13 month period, 445 STI screens were performed in 115 patients, 56 women and 59 men. All reported unprotected sex during filming. Seventy-five percent (86) had at least one sexual partner outside work, and 90% used condoms inconsistently with them. Women worked exclusively with women (23%), men only (38%) or both genders (39%). Almost all men (97%) worked exclusively heterosexually. Thirty-eight percent (44/115) were diagnosed with 77 STIs, including non-sp

The 'Reading the Mind in Films' Task [child version]: complex emotion and mental state recognition in children with and without autism spectrum conditions.

Children with autism spectrum conditions (ASC) have difficulties recognizing others' emotions. Research has mostly focused on basic emotion recognition, devoid of context. This study reports the results of a new task, assessing recognition of complex emotions and mental states in social contexts. An ASC group (n = 23) was compared to a general population control group (n = 24). Children with ASC performed lower than controls on the task. Using task scores, more than 87% of the participants were allocated to their group. This new test quantifies complex emotion and mental state recognition in l

Undifferentiation of somatic responses to emotions in a case of functional amnesia.

The term functional amnesia (FA) has been proposed for cases of memory impairment presenting with severe retrograde amnesia in the absence of cerebral injury or history of psychiatric disturbance. Emotional flattening has often been reported alongside FA, however the mechanism of such a modification is unknown. This study aimed to explore the emotional processing in a rare case of a patient with FA complaining of severe emotional flattening. We presented ecological dynamic video stimuli conveying strong peaceful and fearful emotions to the patient and 13 controls. We then explored their emotio

Asymmetric ground reaction forces and knee kinematics during squat after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: This bilateral squat study tests whether people with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction have symmetric three-dimensional ground reaction forces (GRFs) and symmetric anterior-posterior (AP) translation rates of the femur with respect to the tibia when compared with healthy control subjects. We hypothesized that there would be no long-term asymmetry in knee kinematics and kinetics in ACL reconstructed subjects following surgery and rehabilitation. METHODS: Position and GRF data were collected on eight ACL reconstructed and eight control subjects during bilateral squat.

[Digital angiography of the pudendal arteries in erectile impotence].

Digital angiography of pudendal and penile arteries was performed on 32 consecutive patients with erectile failure of suspected vascular origin. Intra-arterial injection of contrast medium via selective catheterization of the hypogastric arteries was used in 6 cases. In 27 cases, one of which already submitted to arterial catheterism, the intravenous route was employed for contrast administration, using a single, large volume, high speed bolus. In one case, digital angiography was diagnostically unreliable due to patient's motion and to blurring artifacts. Among the remaining cases, 9/31 (29%)

Closely overlapping responses to tools and hands in left lateral occipitotemporal cortex.

The perception of object-directed actions performed by either hands or tools recruits regions in left fronto-parietal cortex. Here, using functional MRI (fMRI), we tested whether the common role of hands and tools in object manipulation is also reflected in the distribution of response patterns to these categories in visual cortex. In two experiments we found that static pictures of hands and tools activated closely overlapping regions in left lateral occipitotemporal cortex (LOTC). Left LOTC responses to tools selectively overlapped with responses to hands but not with responses to whole bodi

Augmenting virtual reality exposure for PTSD with physical activity: study protocol of a randomised controlled trial.

Background: Physical activity is increasingly incorporated in trauma-focused treatments as an augmentation strategy to improve treatment outcome. In a novel VR exposure treatment known as 3MDR (Multi-modal Motion-assisted Memory Desensitization and Reconsolidation), patients engage in low-intensity physical activity by walking on a treadmill throughout the therapy session, approaching trauma-related pictures that progressively enlarge until fully displayed in a VR environment. Physical activity is considered a key augmentation strategy in this treatment, with the proposed mechanism that walkin
