Primary renal zygomycosis is a rare fungal infection, and only 45 cases have been reported in the literature. The major etiologic agents of the disease were Mucor spp., Rhizomucor spp., Rhizopus spp. and Absidia spp. Here we report a case of primary renal zygomycosis due to Rhizopus oryzae infection. The patient had systemic lupus erythematosus and was treated with corticosteroids. He had frequent micturition, urodynia and passed amorphous and membranous-looking masses through the urethra several times prior to admission. Histopathological examination of the mass showed numerous broad and nons…

We describe a case of hepatic mucormycosis with abscess, an uncommon presentation of mucormycetes infection. Our patient was initially treated with transcutaneous pigtail catheter placement, liposomal amphotericin B, and micafungin without improvement. The patient subsequently improved after hepatic segmentectomy and hemidiaphragm resection.

Disease can be conceptualized as the result of interactions between infecting microbe and holobiont, the combination of a host and its micro … , micro- and mycobiomes leading up to infection onset in a leukemia patient that developed invasive mucormycosis. We discovered that the patient was infected with a strain of the recently described Mucor velutinosus species which we determined was hypervirulent in a Drosophila challenge model and has a predisposition for skin dissemination. After comple …

Invasive fungal infections (IFI) are challenging to predict, diagnose and treat, and are associated with a particularly high mortality among patients with hematological malignancies. They are relatively uncommon in patients with lymphoma, compared with those with acute leukemia or undergoing allogeneic transplantation. We present a patient, autografted for recurrent lymphoma, with fever and refractory diarrhea persisting post engraftment, eventually attributable to disseminated mucor infection. This case illustrates the challenge of timely diagnosis and initiation of treatment for IFI in lymph…

Infections, both traditional and opportunistic, constitute a major cause of morbidity and mortality in kidney transplant recipients. Mucorales, ubiquitous environmental fungi, is the cause for a rare but devastating opportunistic infection. Here, we describe a patient with an unusual mucor infection involving the graft kidney and the graft renal artery who, following a deceased donor kidney transplantation, presented in the early posttransplantation period with a vascular blowout and massive hemorrhage. Prompt aggressive resuscitation and surgical intervention saved his life; however, the rena…

Orbital infarction syndrome is an uncommon pathology with devastating consequences. It is frequently secondary to atherothrombotic phenomena … ction (OAO) with a patent internal carotid artery. KOH mount of deep nasal swab was confirmatory of mucor. This is the first reported case of orbital infarction syndrome in the setting of COVID-19.

Mucormycosis is a rare fungal infection in immunocompetent patients, whereas in immunocompromised, it may be systemic and disseminated infection associated with high mortality. Mucormycosis is one of the most rapidly progressing and fulminant forms of fungal infections; Mucor circinelloides is rarely isolated species, also from immunocompromised patients. The reported case of mucormycosis after a traffic accident indicates that it may be the result of a contamination of wound by M. circinelloides coming from the environment. The fungal strain was identified by phenotypic methods and confirmed …

Primary cutaneous mucormycosis is very unusual and rarely reported in the literature. The diagnosis is difficult and may mimic several infectious and immunologic diseases. We report a case of vulvar mucormycosis in a pediatric patient with end stage renal disease. A female on her first decade of life presented with a small scar on the right labia majora that in matters of weeks progressed aggressively, ulcerated, extended to the contralateral labia and invaded the entir vulvar region. Subsequent surgical debridement was undertaken. Pathology revealed Mucor species with progressive tissue necro…

The authors report the first case, to their knowledge, of disseminated coccidioidomycosis occurring in a liver transplant recipient. The cas … ction was associated with a very grave prognosis for the transplant recipient. Rare infections with Mucor and Cryptococcus neoformans are described in the literature.

This report describes 16 cases of candidiasis, seven of aspergillosis, four of mucormycosis, two of cryptococcosis and one of nocardiosis in which the kidney was involved. Characteristic patterns of renal tissue injury were seen in each of these infections. Candida and nocardia caused microabscesses in the cortex and medulla. Tissue destruction was minimal with candidiasis and when present was confined to the papillary tips and produced only mild impairment of renal function. Aspergillus and mucor invaded blood vessels resulting in thrombosis and extensive necrosis of cortical and medullary ti…

The term mucormycosis encompasses a distinctive group of infections caused by fungi belonging to genera within the taxonomic order Mucorales, usually Rhizopus, Absidia, Mortierella, and Mucor. These fungi are widespread in nature, subsisting on decaying vegetation and diverse organic materials. Although the fungi and spores of Mucorales show minimal intrinsic pathogenicity toward normal persons, they can initiate aggressive and fulminant infections under certain clinical conditions. Ketoacidotic diabetics are predisposed to rhinocerebral mucormycosis, whereas patients with leukemia or lymphoma…

Mucormycosis is usually an acute angioinvasive infections, which leads to non-suppurative necrosis and significant tissue damage. It represents 1.6% of all the invasive fungal infections and predominates in immunosuppressed patients with risk factors. Incidence has been significantly increased even in immunocompetent patients. Due to finding a case of disseminated mucormycosis caused by Rhizomucor pusillus in a young immunocompetent patient, a systematic review was carried out of reported cases in PubMed of mucormycosis in immunocompetent adults according to the main anatomic locations, and es…

Mucormycosis is an opportunistic invasive infection caused by fungi of the order Mucorales. Rhizopus, Absidia, and Mucor are the most commonly encountered genera. Disease is characterized by vascular invasion, thrombosis, and tissue necrosis. Rhinocerebral disease is the most common manifestation but pulmonary, cutaneous, gastrointestinal, and widely disseminated forms have been reported. Pulmonary and disseminated disease are usually seen in neutropenic patients with leukemia or lymphoma. Both present as fever and unexplained pulmonary infiltrates unresponsive to antibacterials and corticoste…

Invasive fungal infections of the head and neck are uncommon. The most common organism is Mucor which is classically seen in diabetic individuals in or immediately after a bout of ketoacidosis. This report outlines our experience of four cases of invasive fungal disease caused by the Aspergillus species. All four patients in this series were profoundly granulocytopenic. Three of the four patients remained profoundly immunocompromised and succumbed to infections. One patient recovered immune competence and became a long term survivor after antifungal chemotherapy and debridement of necrotic tis…

During surge of COVID-19-associated mucormycosis (CAM), we identified five cases of CAM where two different species of Mucorales were isolated. All had history of diabetes mellitus and presented with clinical features suggesting rhino-orbital mucormycosis. The patients grew different species from their nasal scraping/biopsy samples, Rhizopus arrhizus, R. homothallicus (n = 2); R. homothallicus, Lictheimia corymbifera (n = 1); R. arrhizus, Mucor spp (n = 1); and L. corymbifera, Apophysomyces variabilis (n = 1). All patients underwent surgical and medical (liposomal amphotericin B) treatment. Al…

Mucormycosis is a rare opportunistic infection, usually seen in diabetics, immunocompromised, or those with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Gastrointestinal involvement is uncommon but often deadly. We report a case of gastrointestinal mucormycosis causing intestinal perforation in a non-diabetic, COVID-19 negative, immunocompetent woman, associated with puerperal sepsis. A 22-year-old woman presented to our center on post-natal day five, following delivery with insertion of an intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD). She had complaints of breathlessness, fatigue, and giddiness. Examinat…

Chronic cutaneous mucormycosis is a rare condition distinct from the acute form, characterized by a prolonged, indolent course and varied clinical presentations. This study presents a 5-year experience from a tertiary dermato-mycology clinic, identifying six cases, the majority of whom were immunocompetent, with trauma history reported in four patients. The median duration from symptom onset to diagnosis was 60 months. The primary pathogens identified were Rhizopus arrhizus, Mucor variabilis, and Lichtheimia ramosa. Histopathological analysis demonstrated the absence of fungal angioinvasion, a…
