Anxiolytic effect of music exposure on BDNFMet/Met transgenic mice.

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) has been reported to play important roles in the modulation of anxiety, mood stabilizers, and pathophysiology of affective disorders. Recently, a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the BDNF gene (Val66Met) has been found to be associated with depression and anxiety disorders. The humanized BDNF(Met/Met) knock-in transgenic mice exhibited increased anxiety-related behaviors that were unresponsive to serotonin reuptake inhibitors, fluoxetine. Music is known to be able to elicit emotional changes, including anxiolytic effects. In this study, we found

Attitudes of college music students towards noise in youth culture.

The effectiveness of a hearing loss prevention program within a college may be dependent on attitudes among students majoring in music. The purpose of this study was to assess the attitudes of music majors toward noise and to compare them to students not majoring in music. Participants ( N = 467) filled out a questionnaire designed to assess attitudes toward noise in youth culture and attitudes toward influencing their sound environment. Results showed that students majoring in music have a healthier attitude toward sound compared to students not majoring in music. Findings also showed that mu

Lullament: lullaby and lament therapeutic qualities actualized through music therapy.

Lullabies and laments promote new awareness, enculturation, adaptation, and grief expression. These concepts' relevance to palliative care, however, has not been examined. In this study, a music therapist used a grounded theory-informed design to reflexively analyze lullaby and lament qualities, evident in more than 20 years of personal palliative care practice. Thus, the construct "lullament" emerged, which signified helpful moments when patients' and families' personal and sociohistorical relationship with lullabies and laments were actualized. Specific music could be both a lullaby and a la

Music therapy: a novel motivational approach for dually diagnosed patients.

Co-occurring mental illness and addiction is very common and results in worse treatment outcomes compared to singly diagnosed addicted individuals. Integrated treatment for co-occurring disorders is associated with better treatment outcomes; however there is a wide range of what is included in integrated treatment. Due to patient and staff interests, integrated treatment often includes complementary and alternative therapies, including music and art therapy. There is a need to study how these approaches effect treatment engagement, retention, and outcome. This study was a prospective naturalis

[Music therapy effectiveness to decrease anxiety in mechanically ventilated patients].

The aim of this review is to find out whether or not music therapy is an effective nursing intervention to decrease anxiety and promote relaxation in ventilator-dependent patients. For the purpose of this review, relaxation has been considered as a reduction in state anxiety and physiologic signs (heart rate, blood pressure or respiratory rate). A comprehensive search has been conducted in electronic databases (Cochrane Library, Medline, CINHAL, Embase and PsycLit) in order to identify systematic reviews on music therapy effectiveness or randomised control trials that compare the effectiveness

Patterns of music agnosia associated with middle cerebral artery infarcts.

The objective of the study is to evaluate if the rupture of an aneurysm located on the middle cerebral artery (MCA) results in disorders of music recognition. To this aim, 20 patients having undergone brain surgery for the clipping of a unilateral left (LBS), right (RBS) or bilateral (BBS) aneurysm(s) of the MCA and 20 neurologically intact control subjects (NC) were evaluated with a series of tests assessing most of the abilities involved in music recognition. In general, the study shows that a ruptured aneurysm on the MCA that is repaired by brain surgery is very likely to produce deficits i

Otoacoustic emissions in 28 young adults exposed to amplified music.

Popular concern about widespread damage to the hearing from exposure to amplified music continues, although there has been little firm evidence of permanent effects in casual listeners. Measurement of transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs) provides a sensitive technique for testing outer hair cell (OHC) function, and was used in this study of 28 young adults aged 18-25 years, whose only significant source of noise exposure was loud music, to look for evidence of poorer cochlear function in those of greater exposure; they provided 27 right ears and 27 left ears suitable for measurement

Military veterans' perspectives on using music to manage chronic pain: themes from the feasibility and acceptability of music imagery and listening interventions for analgesia study.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic pain conditions are common in military veterans, often leading to disability, psychological distress and high healthcare utilization. An interdisciplinary approach, informed by a biopsychosocial model, is recommended for patients with chronic pain. Music-based interventions have shown improvements in patients with pain, but results are inconsistent and most studies have concentrated on acute pain and in-person delivery. OBJECTIVE: The Feasibility and Acceptability of Music and Imagery for Analgesia (FAMILIA) explored the use of two telehealth delivered music intervention

Interventions with Music in PECTus excavatum treatment (IMPECT trial): a study protocol for a randomised controlled trial investigating the clinical effects of perioperative music interventions.

INTRODUCTION: Pectus excavatum repair is associated with substantial postoperative pain, despite the use of epidural analgesia and other analgesic regimens. Perioperative recorded music interventions have been shown to alleviate pain and anxiety in adults, but evidence for children and adolescents is still lacking. This study protocol describes a randomised controlled trial that evaluates the effects of recorded music interventions on postoperative pain relief in children and adolescents after pectus excavatum repair. METHODS: A multicentre randomised controlled trial was set up comparing the

The Effect of Music-Repeating Robotic Parrot Therapy and Different Instrumental Live Music Therapies on Anxiety and Fatigue Levels in Hemodialysis Patients: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of three different music-based interventions on anxiety and fatigue levels in patients undergoing hemodialysis, compared to a concurrent control group receiving standard care. METHODS: This randomized controlled trial involved 64 patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis. They were randomly assigned to four equal groups (n = 16 each): live music, live ney sound therapy (using a traditional reed flute known for its soothing, breath-like tones), a music-repeating robotic parrot therapy (an interactive robotic parrot that repeats music or sounds pr

Trusting self-evaluation: predicting music and language performance from subjective ratings.

INTRODUCTION: Subjective self-evaluation is frequently used to assess perceived musical and linguistic competence, but the extent to which such ratings correspond to objectively measured performance, particularly across domains, remains unclear. METHODS: A total of 104 participants completed objective music tasks assessing singing, melodic discrimination, mistuning perception, and beat perception; language tasks assessing expressive reading, speech imitation, and auditory phonological pattern recognition; and multi-item self-evaluation scales for both domains. Associations were examined using

Colored tones of emotions: the relationship between music, emotions and color.

INTRODUCTION: Music influences not only emotions but also cross-modal perception, including color. Previous studies have demonstrated that major keys and faster tempi are often associated with bright hues and positive affect, whereas minor keys and slower tempi tend to evoke darker shades and negatively valenced emotional states. However, how tempo and tonality jointly relate to emotional and chromatic responses has rarely been systematically examined, and the role of emotion in linking musical features to color choices remains underexplored. METHODS: In this study, 80 participants with no fo

Cognitive enhancement through music therapy: meta-analytic evidence across clinical population.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive decline in aging populations presents a growing public health concern. Music therapy has emerged as a promising non-invasive approach to enhance cognitive function. METHODS: This meta-analysis synthesized data from 14 studies (2010-2025) assessing Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) outcomes following music therapy interventions. RESULTS: Results revealed a significant improvement in cognitive function (SMD = 0.46, 95% CI: 0.26 to 0.67), particularly with passive listening-based therapies administered for more than 3 months (SMD = 0.62, 95% CI: 0.05 to 1.20).
