Eales' Disease is an idiopathic peripheral retinal vasculopathy first described by British ophthalmologist Henry Eales in 1880. Most prevalent in healthy young males, Eales' Disease often presents with symptoms of sudden blurry or decreased vision and floaters. Although no clear, standardized stage of the disease exists, it progresses through three overlapping phases-peripheral periphlebitis, ischemic capillary ischemia, and retinal neovascularization. The etiology of Eales' Disease is unknown and appears to be multifactorial, but post-TB hypersensitivity to tuberculoprotein and M. tuberculosi

Mixed infection by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) consists in the simultaneous coexistence in the same patient of two different strains of Mtb or 2 different variants of the same strain. When one of the variants selects for resistance mutations, it is called monoclonal heteroresistance (HTR); if there are 2 different strains, one sensitive and one resistant (or with different resistance patterns), it is called polyclonal HTR. Three cases of HIV/AIDS patients are presented, all with repeated treatment adherence problems, in whom monoclonal HTR was diagnosed through Mtb complete genomic sequen…

A 2-month-old male with failure to thrive and respiratory symptoms was found to have bilateral pneumonia secondary to Mycobacterium abscessus . M. abscessus pulmonary infections have mainly been noted in immunocompromised children; prior reports presented similarly, though our patient is unique given the young age of presentation and lack of diagnosed immunodeficiency or underlying disease.

A 4-year-old domestic shorthair cat was presented with a 7-month history of nodules and draining fistulous tracts of the ventral abdomen. Histopathological examination of affected tissue revealed acid-fast bacilli stained by the Ziehl-Neelsen procedure. Deep tissue culture confirmed infection with a rapidly growing mycobacterium, and gene sequencing characterized the organism as Mycobacterium porcinum. Treatment with pradofloxacin and doxycycline resulted in clinical resolution of the lesions. On continued antibiotic therapy 7 months later, there was no local recurrence nor were there clinical…

Bacterial cell surface adhesins play a major role in facilitating host colonization and subsequent establishment of infection. The surface of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, owing to the complex architecture of its cell envelope, expresses numerous adhesins with varied chemical nature, including proteins, lipids, lipoproteins, glycoproteins and glycopolymers. Studies on mycobacterial adhesins show that they bind with multifarious host receptors and extracellular matrix (ECM) components. In this review we have highlighted the adhesins that are abundantly present on the mycobacterial surface and the…

Objective: To investigate the antimicrobial susceptibility and genotyping of Mycobacterium intracellulare. Methods: A total of 150 M. intracellulare isolates were collected. The susceptibility against 15 antimicrobial agents widely used for treatment of non-tuberculosis mycobacteria (NTM) infections, was tested by broth microdilution assay. Variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR) assay was also performed using the 16-loci genotyping method. Results: The drug susceptibility test revealed that clarithromycin (97.3%, 146/150), moxifloxacin (94.0%, 141/150) and amikacin (90.0%, 135/150) had the b…

In this review we will focus on unique aspects of Mycobacterium abscessus (MABS) which we feel earn it the designation of "shapeshifter of the mycobacterial world." We will review its emergence as a distinct species, the recognition and description of MABS subspecies which are only now being clearly defined in terms of pathogenicity, its ability to exist in different forms favoring a saprophytic lifestyle or one more suitable to invasion of mammalian hosts, as well as current challenges in terms of antimicrobial therapy and future directions for research. One can see in the various phases of M…

BACKGROUND: Mycobacterium africanum comprises two phylogenetic lineages within the M. tuberculosis complex (MTBC) and is an important cause of human tuberculosis (TB) in West Africa. The reasons for this geographic restriction of M. africanum remain unclear. Here, we performed a prospective study to explore associations between the characteristics of TB patients and the MTBC lineages circulating in Ghana.
METHOD: We genotyped 1,211 MTBC isolates recovered from pulmonary TB patients recruited between 2012 and 2014 using single nucleotide polymorphism typing and spoligotyping. Associations betw…

Bovine tuberculosis continued to be a re-emerging problem in some countries especially in endemic areas due to the fact that human and animal health surveillance system is not adopted to diagnose the infection. This crisis can be attributed due to sharing of the same habitat especially in rural areas. In the present study, a total of 148 samples were collected from cattle for isolation over a period of 3 years from cattle with and without lesions, of which 67 isolates were obtained by culture. Fifty one isolates were identified as Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) by IS6110 PCR of whic…

Dormancy models for Mycobacterium tuberculosis play important roles in understanding various aspects of tuberculosis pathogenesis and in the testing of novel therapeutic regimens. By simulating the latent tuberculosis infection, in which the bacteria exist in a non-replicative state, the models demonstrate reduced susceptibility to antimycobacterial agents. This minireview outlines the models available for simulating latent tuberculosis both in vitro and in several animal species. Additionally, this minireview discusses the advantages and disadvantages of these models for investigating the bac…

Mycobacterium cosmeticum is a rapidly growing mycobacterium that was recently identified. However, its role in human infection has not been well described. We present a case of an extremely premature neonate born with bacteraemia due to M. cosmeticum that resolved without sequelae. The infection likely occurred during a prolonged intrauterine transfusion procedure.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection of the central nervous system is thought to be initiated once the bacilli have breached the blood brain barrier and are phagocytosed, primarily by microglial cells. In this study, the interactions of M. tuberculosis with neurons in vitro and in vivo were investigated. The data obtained demonstrate that neurons can act as host cells for M. tuberculosis. M. tuberculosis bacilli were internalized by murine neuronal cultured cells in a time-dependent manner after exposure, with superior uptake by HT22 cells compared to Neuro-2a cells (17.7% versus 9.8%). Intern…

An uncommon disseminated Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection is described in a 12-year-old female dog presenting with fever, dyspnea, cough, weight loss, lymphadenopathy, melena, epistaxis, and emesis. The dog had a history of close contact with its owner, who died of pulmonary tuberculosis. Radiographic examination revealed diffuse radio-opaque images in both lung lobes, diffuse visible masses in abdominal organs, and hilar and mesenteric lymphadenopathy. Bronchial washing samples and feces were negative for acid-fast organisms. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based species identification of…

PURPOSE: Two hundred and fifty-three patients were included in a study on the etiology of encephalitis, carried out in France in 2007. Tuberculosis was the second most frequently identified cause, after HSV and with the same number of cases as VZV. The authors report the specific features of patients presenting with tuberculosis encephalitis (TE).
METHODS: TE patients were defined as patients presenting with encephalitis, with positive culture or PCR for Mycobacterium tuberculosis, or the association of clinical, biological, imaging, and epidemiological evidence (possible cases). Clinical, mi…

A 69-year-old man, who underwent total thymectomy 5 years previously, was referred to our division because the chest radiograph revealed abnormal shadows in both the lungs. The chest radiograph and CT scan showed pleural thickening in both apexes and tree-in-bud signs in both the lower lobes, which suggested bronchiolitis. We had retrospectively confirmed similar centrilobular small nodules and tree-in-bud signs on the chest CT scan when the thymoma was diagnosed. Mycobacterium intracellulare was detected in the sputum by acid-fast staining and polymerase chain reaction. The coincidence of thy…
