A diagnostically challenging case of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor primary to the peritoneum.

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors are difficult to diagnose because of the lack of specific indicators. We describe a diagnostically challenging case of an inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor primary to the peritoneum. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was a 25-year-old male who presented at our hospital with lower abdominal pain. Computed tomography revealed a mass lesion 80 mm in diameter just above the bladder. This was suspected to be a bleeding tumor of the urachus. Since malignancy could not be ruled out, surgery was planned. This revealed a fragile tumor arising from the pe

Low-grade malignant myofibroblastic sarcoma of the larynx: a case report.

Low-grade myofibroblastic sarcoma (LGMS) is a rare malignant mesenchymal tumor derived from myofibroblasts. It is commonly identified in the head and neck, and particularly in the oral cavity, but rarely in the larynx. In this case report, we describe a patient who presented with hoarseness and underwent electronic fiber laryngoscopy, which revealed a neoplasm on the surface of his left vocal cord. The vocal cord tumor was resected under general anesthesia, and a malignant LGMS was diagnosed on postoperative pathologic examination. The results of immunohistochemical staining of the sections fo…

Leiomyoma-like Morphology in Metastatic Uterine Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumors.

Uterine inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms that frequently harbor ALK gene rearrangements and have a low risk of metastasis. We reported 3 of these tumors mimicking the appearance of leiomyoma in their recurrence. These patients were 34, 43, and 45 years old. Two uterine tumors demonstrated classic morphology, with combined myxoid, compact fascicular, and hyalinized patterns and spindled cells with bipolar cytoplasmic processes, moderate atypia, and lymphoplasmacytic inflammatory infiltrates. The third had a "leiomyoma-like" appearance, with fascicles of

MARCH8 downregulation modulates profibrotic responses including myofibroblast differentiation.

Interstitial lung diseases can result in poor patient outcomes, especially in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), a severe interstitial lung disease with unknown causes. The lack of treatment options requires further understanding of the pathological process/mediators. Membrane-associated RING-CH 8 (MARCH8) has been implicated in immune function regulation and inflammation, however, its role in the development of pulmonary fibrosis and particularly the fibroblast to myofibroblast transition (FMT) remains a gap in existing knowledge. In this study, we demonstrated decreased MARCH8 expression i

Infantile inflammatory myofibroblastic tumour of the sigmoid colon: a diagnostic dilemma.

An inflammatory myofibroblastic tumour (IMT) is an uncommon neoplasm composed of inflammatory cells and myofibroblasts in a fibrous stroma. They are mostly seen in the lungs and rarely involve the gastrointestinal tract. An 8-month-old infant presented with a history of lower abdominal lump for 2 months. Her CT scan confirmed a large, lobulated mass in the retroperitoneum arising from the pelvis. The mass was found to be arising from the sigmoid colon on laparotomy which was excised. Histopathology showed a cellular tumour composed of spindle cells and inflammatory lymphocytic infiltrate. Immu…

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumour of the bladder: a case report and review of the literature.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumours (IMTs) are rare neoplasms of uncertain malignant potential that closely resemble other more aggressive spindle cell tumours. The distinction of IMT from the latter is of importance. We report a case of IMT in a 27-year-old man who presented with intermittent painless, macroscopic haematuria and was found to have a large bladder mass arising from the dome of the bladder. The tumour was resected transurethrally, and histology and immunohistochemistry were consistent with an IMT of the bladder. Our patient remained asymptomatic at follow-up 3 months later, whe

Fatal Cardiac Tamponade Due to a Pericardial Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumor.

The patient was a 34-year-old woman who suddenly collapsed. On arrival, she was in cardiac arrest. Cardiac ultrasound revealed cardiac tamponade; thus, urgent thoracotomy with pericardiotomy was performed. Spontaneous circulation was temporarily obtained; however, her circulation was not stabilized, and she ultimately died. An autopsy revealed a pericardial inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) causing bloody cardiac tamponade. There were no signs of cardiac rupture, myocardial infarction or aortic dissection. We reported the first case of fatal bloody cardiac tamponade due to pericardial I

Cardiac Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumours in Three Young Adult Cats.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumours (IMTs) of the heart are described in three young adult cats (case 1, 3.5 years old; case 2, 2.7 years old; case 3, 1.8 years old) that died due to pleural and pericardial effusions resulting from congestive heart failure. At necropsy, cardiac masses, measuring 4 × 3 × 2.5 cm (case 1), 3.5 × 2.5 × 2 cm (case 2) and 3 × 2.5 × 2 cm (case 3), were located mainly in the right auricle (case 1) and atrial septum (cases 2 and 3) with variable extension into the surrounding tissue. Histologically, the atrial masses in all three cats comprised proliferation of spindl

Tumor or Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Reaction in an Adolescent With an Abdominal Lymphatic Malformation?

We report the case of a 17-year-old male who presented with intractable nausea and vomiting. Cross-sectional imaging revealed a large retrogastric abdominal mass. Fine needle aspiration done via endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) was nondiagnostic. Exploratory laparotomy revealed a large inflammatory mass densely adherent to the stomach and retroperitoneum. Incisional biopsy frozen section revealed spindle cells, and subsequent resection of the mass with en-bloc subtotal gastrectomy with Roux-en-y gastrojejunostomy reconstruction was performed. Final pathology demonstrated a lymphatic malformation wi

[Atypical keloids with an unusual myofibroblastic differentiation in a patient with acne vulgaris].

We present the case of a patient with a discreet acne and multiple keloids in the area of the upper trunk, histologically showing an unusual myofibroblastic differentiation. So far, the clinical course shows a poor response to the treatment, including cryotherapy, intralesional corticosteroid injections, occlusive silicone dressings and dye laser.

Echogenicity of Dupuytren's nodules is correlated to myofibroblast load and nodule hardness.

This study aimed to determine the association between the echogenicity of Dupuytren's disease nodules and myofibroblast load, and between echogenicity and nodule hardness. Thirty-eight nodules were assessed sonographically. The echogenicity of nodules was measured objectively with Image J (grey-value) and subjectively by visual inspection (hypo-, mixed and hyper-echogenicity). These findings were compared with myofibroblast load measured by histopathological analysis. In a different cohort, 97 nodules were assessed for grey-value and nodule hardness using a tonometer. There was a moderate, sig

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors associated with the placenta: a series of 9 cases.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) of the uterus are often associated with pregnancy and are delivered with the placenta. We describe the clinical, pathologic, and molecular findings in nine cases of placenta-associated IMT (PaIMT). All the lesions were incidentally discovered at delivery or on placental pathological examination. The maternal age ranged from 21 to 41 (mean = 30.6) years. Eight patients had high-risk pregnancies, and when known, all patients were multigravida. Macroscopically, eight tumors were well defined, ranging in size from 2 to 6 cm present at the maternal surface

A Rare Case of Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumor of the Prostate and Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a rare type of soft-tissue neoplasm. IMT of the urinary tract is more common in the bladder and kidneys. Prostatic IMT is extremely rare. CASE REPORT: We present a rare case of IMT of the prostate and a literature review on this condition. The patient was a 72-year-old man who presented with urinary symptoms. Transrectal needle biopsy of the prostate revealed prostatic adenocarcinoma with nodular hyperplasia. Radical prostatectomy revealed IMT without residual adenocarcinoma. On immunohistochemical examination, the tumor cells showed pos

Recurrent endobronchial inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors: Novel treatment options.

Endobronchial inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) rarely occur in children younger than 10 years of age and have intermediate malignant potential. A 7-year-old girl initially presented with pneumonia. After failing outpatient treatment, she re-presented in status asthmaticus. Computed tomography showed a left mainstem endobronchial mass which was resected bronchoscopically. Pathology was consistent with IMT. Surveillance bronchoscopy identified a recurrence. Despite a left upper lobectomy, recurrence led to further treatment with celecoxib and argon plasma coagulation. Follow-up broncho

[A Case of Laparoscopic Local Resection of the Stomach for an Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumor].

A 52-year-old man underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy screening that identified a submucosal tumor in the gastric fornix, and a solid tumor with a maximum diameter of 35mm was suspected based on abdominal computed tomography. An endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration biopsy showed spindle-shaped cells with KIT, CD34, desmin, and S-100 all testing negative. Based on the diagnosis of a gastrointestinal stromal tumor, subtotal gastrectomy was performed laparoscopically. Postsurgical histopathological testing led to a diagnosis of a primary gastric inflammatory myofibroblastic

Periadrenal inflammatory myofibroblastic tumour: half a decade before cure.

A 30-year-old ex-smoker with a background history of childhood asthma presented with worsening shortness of breath despite receiving high doses of oral corticosteroid for pemphigus vulgaris which was diagnosed 5 years earlier. A high-resolution CT examination of the thorax reported non-specific bronchiectatic changes and revealed an incidental suprarenal mass. A subsequent CT scan confirmed a large adrenal mass with areas of necrosis and calcification. Serum renin and aldosterone, urinary catecholamine and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid were within normal limits. Surgical intervention was delayed

Ureteral inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor: A case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a rare soft-tissue neoplasm which has been described in a variety of locations. In the urogenital system, IMT predominantly occurs in the bladder and the kidney. IMT arising from the ureter is exceedingly rare and has been sporadically reported before. PATIENT CONCERNS: We reported an extremely exceptional case of IMT arising from the ureteral submucosa in a 54-year-old man. The patient was hospitalized with the main complaint of intermittent and moderate left abdominal pain for 2 months. DIAGNOSES AND INTERVENTIONS: Computed tomography
