Representing AIDS in Comics.

Matthew P. McAllister wrote: "Comic books can and have contributed positively to the discourse about AIDS: images that encourage true education, understanding and compassion can help cope with a biomedical condition which has more than a biomedical relevance" [1]. With this in mind, I combined a 23-narrator oral history and my personal memoir about an inpatient Chicago AIDS hospital unit in my book, Taking Turns: Stories from HIV/AIDS Care Unit 371. In doing so, I built upon the existing rich history of HIV/AIDS in comics, which this article will briefly describe. Although not a comprehensive

Neuropathy by folic acid supplementation in a patient with anaemia and an untreated cobalamin deficiency: a case report.

The rising rates of bariatric surgery (BS) are accompanied by neurological complications related to nutrient deficiencies. One of the risk factors for neurological complications in BS patients is poor vitamin and mineral supplementation. Prevention, diagnosis and treatment of these disorders are necessary parts of lifelong care after BS. Particularly important for optimal functioning of the nervous system are vitamin B1 , B6 , B12 (cobalamin), E, copper and possibly vitamin B11 (folic acid). In this case report, we narrate about a patient with anaemia and multiple vitamin and mineral deficienc

In Their Own Words: Exploring Family Pathways to Housing Instability.

Housing instability threatens the health and well-being of millions of families across the United States, yet little is known about the characteristics or housing trajectories of at-risk families. To address this gap in our understanding of family risk for housing instability and homelessness, we undertook a qualitative descriptive study utilizing a convenience sample of 16 mothers recruited from a housing service agency living in Detroit and receiving emergency services to avoid homelessness. Participants completed the Brief Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ), then narrated their life events

Metacognition, memory disorganization and rumination in posttraumatic stress symptoms.

The present study aimed to assess the relative contribution of memory disorganization and beliefs about trauma memory in the prediction of posttraumatic stress symptoms. A sample of 95 student nurses and midwives narrated their memory of the most distressing placement related event they had experienced. Several questionnaires were administered, including the Beliefs about Memory Questionnaire (BAMQ), which was devised for the study. Pearson's correlations, hierarchical analyses and mediation analyses were performed on the data. The reliability and validity of the BAMQ gained preliminary suppor

Structural development of the fictional narratives of African American preschoolers.

PURPOSE: This study examined the structural development of African American preschoolers' narratives. It also investigated the effect of background variables (e.g., gender, maternal education, stimulation and responsiveness of the home environment, and whether or not the child lived in poverty) on the children's narratives. METHOD: Sixty-five children completed a story-retelling task at age 4 and again at kindergarten entry. Narratives were then coded for story grammar elements. RESULTS: Four-year-olds narrated some attempts to solve the problem and some elements of the story ending. At kind

Veterinary student narratives of veterinary and interprofessional identity.

INTRODUCTION: The readiness for interprofessional collaboration (IPC) is rooted in interprofessional education (IPE). IPE shapes views of IPC and socializes students into professional roles. Previous work showed differences among medical, veterinary, and dual degree Master of Public Health (MPH) students in identity and role expectations using the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS). Yet, it is uncertain which roles and identities are elicited while using this instrument. The authors sought to answer the following question: What professional and interprofessional identities

End-of-life sedation and gendered narrative registers: a longitudinal qualitative study of spouses bereaved by cancer.

PURPOSE: This study investigates gendered narrative registers in spousal grief following cancer, within this sample and interview context, in palliative care settings including continuous deep sedation until death (CDSUD). It examines (1) how men and women narrate and experience bereavement and (2) how their emotional, relational, and cognitive processes evolve across the first year of bereavement (3, 6, and 12 months post-loss). METHODS: This longitudinal qualitative study is part of the AfterSedatio project. Twenty-two bereaved spouses (12 men and 10 women) were interviewed at 3 (T0), 6 (T1

Childhood traumatic experiences and postpartum depression: a mixed methods narrative study.

PURPOSE: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a significant public health concern with profound effects on the health and well-being of women, children, and families. A growing body of research has identified an association between childhood traumatic experiences and an increased risk of PPD. This study aims to elucidate potentially underrecognized childhood experiences that are perceived as traumatic or particularly formative, and to examine whether linguistic features in brief trauma narratives are associated with PPD symptomatology. METHODS: This analysis included data from 143 participants who

Mapping cancer literacy levels, barriers and facilitators, educational initiatives and misinformation narratives: multiple scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Cancer literacy (CL) is essential for enabling informed decision-making, prevention, early detection and adherence to treatment. However, disparities in CL across Europe, coupled with the spread of disinformation, limit equitable access to cancer care. This protocol describes a collection of scoping reviews to document the state of CL, misinformation narratives and education and training initiatives and identify barriers and facilitators. This work is embedded within the activities of the Beating Cancer Inequalities through Literacy in Europe project and encompasses nine consorti

"I Knew I Could Write": A Novel Narrative Writing Intervention for Adolescents and Young Adults With Cancer.

PURPOSE: Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with cancer often experience social and emotional challenges across the illness course. Recent evidence suggests that engagement with narrative writing may have a positive influence on adolescent wellbeing; however, the potential feasibility, acceptability, and potential impact of narrative writing interventions remains under-explored in the AYA cancer patient population. METHODS: This qualitative study aimed to explore AYAs' perceptions of the feasibility, acceptability, and potential impact of a longitudinal narrative writing intervention for AYA

Perspective reasoning and the real-time comprehension of spoken narrative: Insights from eye movements.

Various aspects of communicative meaning hinge on issues of perspective, and key components of perspective reasoning are known to accompany real-time language comprehension. Drawing on the Visual World Paradigm, past studies have shown that listeners' ability to manage privileged knowledge about objects' existence or presence in a context is more effective than the ability to manage privileged knowledge about objects' identity. The present study tests the generalizability of these findings in a situation where listeners are processing spoken narratives. The central question is how effectively

Leveraging Generative Large Language Models for Temporal Relation Extraction From French Clinical Narratives: Prompt-Chaining Approach.

BACKGROUND: Temporal relation extraction (TRE) in clinical narratives is crucial for understanding patient history, disease progression, and treatment pathways. However, it remains challenging due to limited annotated data and to the complexity of clinical text, including domain-specific terminology, inconsistent information, and implicit temporal reasoning. These challenges are particularly acute for rare diseases, where information such as the date of diagnosis or the onset of key phenotypes is rarely available in structured data, despite being essential for estimating diagnostic delay and r

Factors Affecting the Mental Health and Wellbeing of Men in Nursing: A Systematic Review and Narrative Synthesis.

BACKGROUND: The number of men entering nursing has steadily increased over recent decades. Male nurses contribute unique perspectives and skills; however, men working in female-dominated occupations face distinct impacts on mental health and wellbeing. RESEARCH AIM: To identify factors that negatively impact the mental health and wellbeing of male nurses and students. METHODS: This systematic literature review followed the five steps as outlined by Gregory and Denniss for conducting a systematic literature review and narrative synthesis. RESULTS: Seventy research papers were included. Findi

How Semantic Memory Impacts Narrative Comprehension in Children With Developmental Dyslexia.

In the present study, we examined the differential contribution of semantic knowledge-specifically taxonomic and thematic-to narrative text comprehension in children with developmental dyslexia (DD) aged 8-10 years. Taxonomic knowledge refers to stimuli that are ontologically and logically related, hierarchically organised, linguistically encoded and independent of spatial or temporal links (e.g., the superordinate category animal with members such as lion, dog, or eagle). In contrast, thematic organisation involves stimuli that are related through contextual associations (e.g., meat, knife an

How does disability impact children's experiences in outdoor and risky play? A scoping review and narrative synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Outdoor and risky play are associated with physical, cognitive, social, and emotional health and wellbeing throughout childhood. All children have the right to play, yet children with disabilities (CWD) are not engaging sufficiently in outdoor or risky play. There is limited literature exploring CWD participation in outdoor and risky play. Therefore, this scoping review aimed to summarize the literature exploring CWD experiences of outdoor and risky play, including definitions, types, preferences, benefits, barriers, and strategies to support CWD engagement in outdoor and risky pla

The Paradox of Workforce Self-Sufficiency: Policy Narratives, Professional Identity and Internationally Educated Nurses in the United Kingdom.

The NHS Long Term Workforce Plan positions international recruitment as essential for present stability while projecting a future of reduced structural dependence on internationally educated nurses. This tension, conceptualised as the paradox of self-sufficiency, forms the focus of this study. Drawing on a critical qualitative evidence synthesis, eight UK policy documents were analysed using Bacchi's 'What's the Problem Represented to Be?' (WPR) framework alongside thematic synthesis of 17 qualitative studies, sensitised by Social Identity Theory and Ontological Security. Policy analysis revea

'You Have to Start All Over Again…' Stories About Life With Alcohol-Related Liver Cirrhosis-A Narrative Interview Study.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol-related liver cirrhosis (ALC) is a life-threatening disease and both physically and mentally challenging. At diagnosis, ALC is often at an advanced stage, and symptoms of liver decompensation may be present. Life may be challenged by substance abuse, social problems, limited networks and stigma by the public and the healthcare system. Research on living with ALC is sparse. AIM: To explore people's stories about life before and after diagnosis with ALC. METHODS: The study is empirical and inspired by a phenomenological approach. Six explorative narrative interviews about e

Identifying the psychosocial experience of lung transplant recipients across the transplant trajectory: A systematic review and narrative synthesis.

INTRODUCTION: Patients who receive lung transplantation generally experience dramatically improved physical well-being. However, transplantation is associated with elevated psychosocial distress. Reduced quality of life related to distress may compromise the net benefit of lung transplantation. Patients' concerns likely vary across the illness trajectory, however a comprehensive synthesis that spans the full lung transplant trajectory is absent from the current literature. This review aimed to identify the psychosocial concerns reported by adult lung transplant candidates across the transplant
