This study aimed to evaluate Streptococcus agalactiae genotype and erythromycin resistance in neonatal sepsis. After obtaining the mothers' informed consent, trained nurses sampled 430 neonatal specimens of sepsis from the ear canal, oral cavity and umbilical cord immediately after childbirth and implemented a cross-sectional study. By Gram staining, morphology, hemolysis mode, catalase and CAMP tests, the isolate was identified as S. agalactiae. All 455 isolates were tested for antimicrobial susceptibility by the disc diffusion method. Multilocus sequence typing was used to serotype S. agalac…

INTRODUCTION: Neonatal Sepsis (NNS) is a public health problem which causes death or disability unless appropriate antibiotic treatment is given promptly. Globally, sepsis is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in neonates despite recent progress in health care delivery. We assessed the factors associated with culture proven sepsis among neonates in the Ho Municipality, Ghana.
METHODS: a cross-sectional study was conducted in two public hospitals in the Ho Municipality between January and May, 2016. All neonates who were clinically suspected with sepsis in the Neonatal Intensive Car…

Elizabethkingia meningoseptica (E. meningoseptica ) are Gram-negative bacteria commonly associated with nosocomial infections in neonates. This is a case study of E. meningoseptica, presented as meningitis and sepsis in a term baby. The female infant was born by vaginal delivery at 37 weeks gestational age. The case was peculiar because the baby was neither premature nor immuno-compromised, which are known risk factors for E. meningoseptica infection. The onset began on the second day of the neonate's life. On day 3, peripheral blood culture and cerebrospinal fluid findings isolated a gram-neg

Third-generation cephalosporin resistant Enterobacteriaceae (TCRE) is a global concern especially in neonatal sepsis. We performed a secondary data analysis in a Thai neonatal intensive care unit to identify the risk factors for acquisition of TCRE sepsis and mortality of Enterobacteriaceae sepsis between 1991 and 2017. Multivariate logistic and Cox proportional regression were used for analysis. Numbers of neonates with TCRE and nonTCRE sepsis were 100 and 41 patients, respectively. Medians (interquartile ranges) of gestational age, birthweight, onset of sepsis and total hospital stay of neon…

The incidence of severe infections caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens is currently rising worldwide, and increasing numbers of neonates and children with serious bloodstream infections due to resistant bacteria are being reported. Severe sepsis and septic shock due to gram-negative bacteria represent a significant cause of morbidity and mortality, and contribute to high health care costs. Antimicrobial resistance among Enterobacteriaceae represents a major problem in both health care-associated and community-acquired infections, with extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) and carbap

Neonatal sepsis is one of the major health problems throughout the world and major cause of morbidity and mortality in developing countries. Positive blood culture considers the gold standard for confirmation of neonatal sepsis, but it does not provide rapid diagnosis. So this study was designed to find out the performance of haematological parameters in early diagnosis of neonatal sepsis. The objective of the study was to evaluate the performance of haematological parameters individually and in combination in early diagnosis of neonatal sepsis. It was a cross-sectional study conducted at neon…

Neonatal sepsis is the second most prevalent cause of neonatal deaths in low- and middle-income countries, and many countries lack epidemiologic data on the local causes of neonatal sepsis. During April 2015-November 2016, we prospectively collected 128 blood cultures from neonates admitted with clinical sepsis to the provincial hospital in Takeo, Cambodia, to describe the local epidemiology. Two percent (n = 3) of positive blood cultures identified were Gram-negative bacilli (GNB) and were presumed pathogens, whereas 10% (n = 13) of positive blood cultures identified were likely contaminants,…

BACKGROUND: Neonatal early onset sepsis (EOS) remains an important etiology of neonatal morbidity and mortality. Diagnosis is difficult due to a lack of sensitivity and specificity markers. In France, the management of newborn infants suspected of infection includes the analysis of gastric suction. The objective of the study was to identify early clinical signs in newborn infants with suspected neonatal sepsis to differentiate a likely infection with pathogen bacteria in the gastric suction culture (Streptococcus agalactiae or Escherichia coli) from a possible infection without such pathogen b…

UNLABELLED: Late onset neonatal sepsis (LOS) has a high mortality and the optimal management is poorly defined. We aimed to evaluate new expert panel-derived criteria to define LOS and characterize the current management and antibiotic susceptibility of LOS-causing organisms in Europe. A prospective observational study enrolled infants aged 4 to 90 days in five European countries. Clinical and laboratory findings as well as empiric treatment were recorded and patients were followed until the end of antibiotic therapy. Failure was defined as a change of primary antibiotic, no resolution of clin…

Incidence of neonatal early-onset sepsis has dramatically declined in France from 0.65 to 0.23‰ live births in 10 years since national guidelines to detect and treat intrapartum women with group B streptococcus colonization have been adopted. However, neonatal early-onset sepsis continues to be a common healthcare burden. Group B streptococcus (GBS) remains the leading cause of bacterial infection in term or near-term infants. As a result of prevention strategies, approximately 30% of pregnant women and more than 2% of newborns are treated with systemic antibiotics. Concerns have been expresse

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is an important pathogen that causes neonatal sepsis and meningitis, which have high mortality and morbidity. Most cases of infection are early onset, with late onset infections being less common. Moreover, many cases of infection are caused by type III GBS, while type Ib GBS infections are rare. We report a case of late-onset infection by type Ib GBS. A female neonate weighing 574 g was delivered at 27 weeks' gestation. An endotracheal tube was inserted shortly after birth because of respiratory distress syndrome, and ampicillin was administered by the age of 3 day…

Bacillus pumilus is an environmental contaminant that has been rarely associated with clinical infections. Here, two cases of severe sepsis caused by B. pumilus are described in two full-term neonates; one in a female infant with no factors predisposing her to infection and the other in a male infant requiring mechanical ventilation and an intravenous catheter. In both cases, the micro-organism was recovered from repeated blood cultures and was identified using biochemical assays and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Both infants were successfully treated with vancomycin. This report reveals the poten

OBJECTIVE: To study the organisms causing early and late onset neonatal sepsis, with special reference to multi-drug resistant gram negative bacilli, at two neonatal units (one urban, one rural) in India.
METHODS: Prospective surveillance study.
RESULTS: There were 159 episodes of sepsis (81 urban and 77 rural) affecting 158 babies. Gram negative bacilli caused 117 infections (68%) and predominated at both centres in both early and late sepsis. Klebsiella pneumoniae was the commonest organism, causing 61 infections (38.3%). In early sepsis (0-2 days), non-fermenting gram negative bacilli cau…

OBJECTIVE: Organisms causing early-onset neonatal sepsis (EONS) have consistently changed over time. The distribution of organisms in EONS helps to influence the appropriate type of antibiotic prophylaxis strategy during labor and the antibiotics used in neonates with suspected sepsis.
STUDY DESIGN: To compare the organisms distribution for EONS between 2003 and 2008 for infants admitted to neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) in Canada. Data were retrieved from infants with a positive bacterial blood or cerebrospinal fluid culture in the first 72 h after birth who were admitted to NICUs pa…

We describe what we believe to be the first case of neonatal sepsis caused by CTX-M-producing Escherichia coli, in a low-weight preterm infant, born to a colonized mother who had received antibiotic treatment antepartum. Increased dissemination of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing E. coli in the community should be borne in mind for empirical therapy of sepsis in high-risk newborns.

Neonates have a higher prevalence of bacterial sepsis and have greater morbidity and mortality from sepsis than other infants and children. Our understanding of the inflammatory and immunological responses to sepsis is hampered by the lack of appropriate neonatal murine models. In the present report, we have developed a cecal slurry model of generalized peritonitis in neonatal mice (age range, 5-7 days) and compared the outcome and the innate and adaptive cellular responses of these animals with those of the young adult animals (age range, 7-10 weeks) with sepsis induced either by cecal slurry

The clinical diagnosis of neonatal sepsis is preceded by abnormal heart rate (HR) characteristics of transient decelerations and reduced variability, which intuitively appear to be more nonstationary than normal HR variability. Our goals were to investigate stationarity of HR, and to devise measures useful for early diagnosis of neonatal sepsis. In this context, we define non-stationarity to be present when the observed data differ from surrogate data generated by stationary Gaussian noise with arbitrary linear correlations. We devised statistical methods for determining stationarity of HR dat…

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis for neonatal group B streptococcal (GBS) disease has resulted in an increased rate of non-GBS or antibiotic-resistant early-onset invasive neonatal disease.
METHODS: Maternal and infant chart review of all infants with bacteria other than GBS isolated from blood or spinal fluid in 1996 through 1999 in 19 hospitals (representing 81% of in-state births to state residents) throughout Connecticut. Suspected cases were identified through clinical microbiology laboratory records or through International Classification of Diseases, N
