Development of hepatic angiomyolipoma accompanied with focal nodular hyperplasia long after treatment of pelvic rhabdomyosarcoma.

Survivors of childhood cancer have a higher risk of developing a secondary neoplasm in their lifetime. The increased risk of a second malignant neoplasm is related to treatment of the primary tumor and genetic predisposition. We describe a 19-year-old man with 2 hepatic masses, one of which was diagnosed as a hepatic angiomyolipoma and the other as focal nodular hyperplasia 14 years after the treatment of stage IV pelvic rhabdomyosarcoma. The combination of these tumors has not previously been reported in the literature.

Atypical presentation of an atypical carcinoid.

Carcinoids are malignant neuroendocrine tumors consisting of a spectrum of neoplasms from low-grade typical carcinoid to high-grade small cell carcinoma. Primary neuroendocrine lesions in the mediastinum, especially the thymic region, are rare. Therefore, presently no uniform criteria are available for diagnosis, staging, risk assessment, and treatment. Generally, carcinoid tumors are indolent. However, when they occur in the thymic region, these tumors should be considered as aggressive neoplasms with an elevated risk of local recurrence and distant metastases.

Clinical relevance and implications of HPV-induced neoplasia in different anatomical locations.

Human papillomaviruses (HPV) are widespread DNA viruses that can infect epithelial cells of the skin and mucosa. Most HPV infections remain clinically unapparent and clear spontaneously. In few cases, however, HPV infections persist and can cause benign and malignant neoplasms at different anatomic locations. Malignant HPV-induced neoplasms are caused by distinct types of HPV (oncogenic or high-risk (HR) HPV types) and present in the anogenital (anus, penis, uterine cervix, vagina and vulva) and head and neck (particularly oropharynx) region. In the anogenital region defined precancerous stage

Origin of ovarian cancer from benign cysts.

In a case-control study of 1031 epithelial ovarian cancers and 2311 controls conducted in Italy, 56 cases and 116 controls reported history of benign ovarian cysts, corresponding to a relative risk of 1.3 (95% confidence interval = 0.9-1.8). In a subset of 255 histologically reviewed cases, mucinous and endometrioid ovarian neoplasms and neoplasms of stage I or II arose more frequently from cysts, while use of oral contraceptives or parity were not significantly related to history of ovarian cysts.

Thymic carcinoids in multiple endocrine neoplasia-type 1.

We report a case of a 45-year-old man with thymic carcinoids in multiple endocrine neoplasm-type 1. Extended total thymectomy was performed through a median sternotomy, and the mediastinal regional lymph nodes and fibroadipose tissue were dissected. Multiple endocrine neoplasm-type 1 related thymic carcinoids are rare and have a poor prognosis. The efficacy of radiotherapy and chemotherapy for prolonging survival is limited, and an aggressive surgical approach with complete excision of the tumor with resection of the peripheral tissues and dissection of the mediastinal lymph nodes seems to be

Mast cells and M2 macrophages in ovarian cancer.

The objectives of this study were to investigate the immunohistochemical expression of markers of mast cells and M2 macrophages in benign and malignant ovarian neoplasms and to examine the prognostic value of this expression in ovarian cancer. The study was performed with samples from 32 patients, divided into benign (n = 16) and malignant (n = 16) neoplasm groups. Samples obtained by surgical resection were submitted to immunohistochemical analysis. Higher proportions of M2 macrophages (p = .041) and mast cells (p = .0054) were present in malignant than benign ovarian neoplasms. Histological

Endocrine control of canine mammary neoplasms: serum reproductive hormone levels and tissue expression of steroid hormone, prolactin and growth hormone receptors.

BACKGROUND: Neoplasms of the mammary gland are among the most common diseases in female domestic dogs (Canis familiaris). It is assumed that reproductive hormones influence tumorigenesis in this species, although the precise role of the endocrine milieu and reproductive state is subject to continuing discussion. In line with this, a recent systematic review of available data on the development of mammary neoplasms revealed weak evidence for risk reduction after neutering and an effect of age at neutering. Investigation of several hormone receptors has revealed decreased expression of estrogen

MRI of common penile pathologies and penile prostheses.

MRI can delineate finer details of penile anatomy and pathology due to inherent higher soft-tissue contrast and spatial resolution. It can characterize inflammation and identify abscesses, localize penile fractures, guide surgical planning in penile fibrosis and Peyronie's disease, and depict components of the penile prosthesis and its complications. MRI is a great investigative tool for penile neoplasms, including locally infiltrative neoplasms where clinical examination is limited, and local staging is crucial for surgical planning.

Single testicular metastasis mimicking primary testicular neoplasm: a rare manifestation of prostate cancer.

The incidence of secondary testicular tumors ranges from 0.02 to 2.5% among autopsies in general. With the exception of leukemias and lymphomas, prostate cancer is the most common primary site. It is diagnosed in autopsies or incidentally, following therapeutic orchiectomies in more advanced stages of the disease. In the present report, we show a case of testicular metastasis derived from prostate neoplasm whose clinical presentation as a single metastasis was similar to a primary testicular neoplasm. The diagnosis was evidenced after orchiectomy by histological examination and immunohistochem

Prognostic Value of Bone Marrow Uptake Using 18F-FDG PET/CT Scans in Solid Neoplasms.

BACKGROUND: Fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computerized tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) uptake is known to increase in infective and inflammatory conditions. Systemic inflammation plays a role in oncologic prognosis. Consequently, bone marrow increased uptake in oncology patients could potentially depict the systemic cancer burden. METHODS: A single institute cohort analysis and a systematic review were performed, evaluating the prognostic role of 18F-FDG uptake in the bone marrow in solid neoplasms before treatment. The cohort included 113 esophageal cancer patients

Updates in neuroendocrine neoplasms: From mechanisms to the clinic.

Scientific advances constantly improve our understanding of the mechanisms underlying tumorigenesis, allowing us now to analyze cancer in a more precise manner and to identify at an earlier stage the tumors that have greater risk of aggressive behavior. Understanding neuroendocrine neoplasms at molecular level has enabled increasingly targeted treatments, with safety and efficacy validated in large randomized trials. Moreover, the first studies of targeted therapies after molecular profiling of neuroendocrine neoplasms have shown encouraging results, allowing us to foresee ever more personaliz

TUMOR-ASSOCIATED MACROPHAGES: RELATIONSHIP WITH CLINICAL STATUS OF PATIENTS AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGICAL FEATURES OF BREAST CANCER.

BACKGROUND: Infiltration of the tumor microenvironment by macrophages plays a key role in the progression of breast cancer (BC), modulating tumor growth, angiogenesis, immunosuppression, and metastasis. However, the association between macrophage infiltration levels and the clinicopathological characteristics of BC, including the molecular subtype of the neoplasm and receptor status, remains insufficiently studied. AIM: To investigate the relationship between macrophage infiltration in BC tissue and the extent of tumor spread as well as the molecular profile of the neoplasms. MATERIALS AND M

Current techniques for the surgical management of malignant lesions of the thoracic esophagus and cardia.

Cancers of the esophagus and cardia remain serious conditions that cause many thousands of deaths every year throughout the world. In North America, cancer of the esophagus and gastric cardia is an endemic disease of low order and stable incidence. Nevertheless, it is responsible for many deaths and considerable suffering. With current methods of treatment, substantial palliation and amelioration of patient disability are possible, and some patients gain long-term survival with comfort and even cure. A combination of surgical resection and reconstruction is the chief modern method of managemen

Pathogenesis, classification, and therapy of eosinophilia and eosinophil disorders.

Eosinophilia is a recurrent feature and diagnostic clue in several hematologic malignancies. In stem cell- and myelopoietic neoplasms, eosinophils are derived from the malignant clone, whereas in lymphoid neoplasms and reactive states, eosinophilia is usually triggered by eosinopoietic cytokines. Myeloid neoplasms typically presenting with eosinophilia include chronic myeloid leukemia, chronic eosinophilic leukemia (CEL), other myeloproliferative neoplasms, some acute leukemias, advanced mast cell disorders, and rare forms of myelodysplastic syndromes. Diagnostic evaluations in unexplained eos
