Neoplasia in zebrafish (Danio rerio) treated with N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine by three exposure routes at different developmental stages.

We exposed embryos (83 hours postfertilizaton) and fry (3 weeks posthatch) to N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG) by immersion in aqueous solutions of 0-10 ppm for 1 hour (embryo) or 0-2 ppm for 24 hours (fry). Zebrafish embryos were microinjected with MNNG at levels of 0 or 96 ng/egg. Diets containing 0-2,000 ppm MNNG were fed to juvenile zebrafish for 3 months beginning at 2 months posthatch. Fish were sampled for histopathologic study at 6-12 months after initiation of carcinogen exposure. Embryos and fry were both quite responsive to MNNG; however, juvenile zebrafish were remarkabl

Causal relationships between oral-gut microbiome and bone neoplasm-related phenotypes: Insights from bidirectional Mendelian randomization.

The human oral and gut microbiota are the 4 largest microbial communities in the body and play crucial roles in maintaining homeostasis and influencing disease. Observational studies have suggested links between these microbiota and bone neoplasm-related phenotypes, but establishing causality has been challenging due to confounding factors and reverse causality. We conducted a bidirectional, 2-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study to investigate evidence consistent with a potential causal association between the saliva and gut microbiota and various bone neoplasm-related phenotypes. [Value of core needle biopsy in preoperative diagnostics of soft tissue tumors: possibilities and limitations].

The differential diagnosis of soft tissue swellings encompasses a variety of benign, intermediate, low-grade malignant and high-grade neoplastic lesions in addition to tumor-like reactive processes. As treatment of these heterogeneous conditions varies greatly from conservative observation and simple local excision up to extensive radical surgical resection, treatment decisions are based mainly on a precise preoperative histological diagnosis on limited biopsy material. Even for clinically unequivocal sarcomas, the importance of the preoperative histological diagnosis has been increasingly emp

MAML2-Rearranged Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma of the Parotid Gland: A Report in a 20-Month-Old Toddler.

Malignancies of salivary gland origin are rare in children. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is the most common histologic type of salivary gland neoplasm in pediatrics. We report a rare case of parotid MEC in a 20-month-old female patient. The tumor was composed of nests of epidermoid cells with nuclei appearing vesicular, pleomorphic, and hyperchromatic with an admixture of mucous cells and cystic spaces within a prominent connective tissue stroma. Immunohistochemically, the epidermoid cells showed cytokeratin 7 and P63 positivity, and mucous cells were positive for mucicarmine. Molecularly, t

Fibromatosis of infratemporal space.

Fibromatosis is a rare benign mesenchymal neoplasm which primarily originates in the muscle, connective tissue, fascial sheaths, and musculoaponeurotic structures. It is commonly seen as abdominal tumour but in maxillofacial region, the occurrence of these tumours is very rare and exceedingly rare in infratemporal space. Often misdiagnosed due to its varied clinical behaviour, fibromatosis is benign, slow-growing, infiltrative tumour without any metastatic potential, but is locally aggressive causing organ dysfunction along with high recurrence rate. We report a case of fibromatosis involving

Penile Myointimoma: A Clinicopathologic Study of 4 Tumors.

Penile myointimoma is a rare, benign tumor occurring within the corpus spongiosum vasculature of the glans penis. Thus far, there have been twenty-three reported tumors in the literature. We present four additional tumors of this unique myointimal proliferation. Patients ranged in age from 20 to 68 years and presented with a firm mass on the glans penis. All four tumors displayed distinctive morphologic features consisting of a myointimal proliferation with plexiform architecture of bland myofibroblastic cells in a myxoid background in the corpus spongiosum vasculature. Characteristic cytoplas

Subcutaneous seeding following surgical excision of an intracranial meningioma in a cat.

Traditionally patient owners express their concerns that surgical or diagnostic procedures on a tumor may induce metastasis. In pets, this has been documented in only very rare occasions, e. g. needle path metastases after diagnostic fine needle biopsies of urinary bladder or prostatic tumors. Here, we describe a case of subcutaneous seeding of a feline intracranial grade 1 meningioma 6 months after surgical resection. A 10-year-old male neutered domestic shorthaired cat with typical neurological signs was diagnosed with an extra-axial contrast enhancing mass in the dorsal frontotemporal lobes

Nodular fasciitis of the tongue.

BACKGROUND: Nodular fasciitis is a non-neoplastic proliferation within the subcutaneous tissue and the deep fascia of the fibroblasts, probably of a reactive nature characterized by apparent infiltration of the connective tissues by a mitotically active spindle cell lesion. Nodular fasciitis in the head/neck region is rarely found and only 2 previous cases affecting the tongue have been reported. METHODS AND RESULTS: The purpose of this study was for us to report a very rare case of a 67-year-old man with a history of a 3-month subepithelial asymptomatic nodule of the tongue tip with an ulcer

Malignant nephroblastoma in a common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus).

Necropsy of a 17-month-old male common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) with a history of increased abdominal girth resulted in the finding of a unilateral polycystic renal neoplasm. Detailed histopathologic and immunohistochemical investigations revealed different tissue types within the tumor including stromal connective tissue and fusiform mesenchymal cell formations surrounding blastemal cells as well as different developmental stages of organ-specific epithelial cells accompanied by extensive cyst formation. Metastases were not observed. In consideration of the macroscopic, histologic, and i

Prognostic significance of disseminated tumor cells in the connective tissue of patients with medullary thyroid carcinoma.

INTRODUCTION: Disseminated tumor cells in the connective tissue (CT-DTCs) do not have any connection to a primary tumor or the lymph nodes. They are identified quite often in patients with medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), but nothing is known regarding their prognostic significance. METHODS: Among 450 patients with MTC, 69 (15%) were identified as having CT-DTCs. A case-control group of patients without CT-DTCs was selected. The two groups were matched concerning TNM classification, age, heredity, and sex. Because many patients with CT-DTCs had extrathyroidal tumor extension (pT4 category),

Smooth Muscle Tumors of the Visceral Adnexal and Uterine Ligaments and Adnexal Connective Tissue: A Clinicopathologic Study of 67 Cases.

The endopelvic fascia is a biomechanical network of supportive tissue that suspends and secures the female reproductive organs to the pelvic sidewall. Several visceral adnexal and uterine ligaments are part of this framework, and we have observed that smooth muscle tumors (SMTs) arising from these structures morphologically resemble gynecologic smooth muscle neoplasms. To determine whether gynecologic smooth muscle tumor criteria for malignancy are valid in these tumors, we evaluated the morphologic features of 67 tumors from 67 patients and correlated our findings with patient outcome. Evaluation of inpatient clinical documentation readiness for ICD-10-CM.

This research study examined the gaps in documentation that occur when coding in ICD-10-CM. More than 4,000 diagnoses from all chapters were coded from 656 electronic documents obtained from a large integrated healthcare facility at the time the study was conducted (2012). After the documents were coded, areas for documentation improvement were identified for chapters that resulted in deficiencies in documentation, and a quick reference guide was developed. The overall absent documentation percentage was 15.4 percent. The 10 chapters with the highest percentage of absent documentation were cha

The role of the cilium in hereditary tumor predisposition syndromes.

The primary cilium is a highly conserved cell organelle that is closely connected to processes involved in cell patterning and replication. Amongst their many functions, cilia act as "signal towers" through which cell-cell signaling cascades pass. Dysfunction of cilia or the myriad processes that are connected with cilium function can lead to disease. Due to the sheer number of cellular processes that at some point involve the primary cilium, the effects of misregulation are highly heterogeneous between different cell populations. However, because of the importance of primary cilia in the deve

Skeletal involvement in tumor-induced osteomalacia.

Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is an ultrarare paraneoplastic syndrome of abnormal phosphate and vitamin D metabolism secondary to the overproduction of fibroblast growth factor 23 by small-sized mesenchymal tumors typically located in soft tissues and bone. The tumor has adverse effects on bone and patients complain of skeletal symptoms and, in severe cases, they suffer multiple devastating fractures. Specific features may characterize the histology of tumors located in bone with respect to those found in extra-skeletal sites. Indeed, the matrix may contain foci resembling primitive cartila

Tumor-induced osteomalacia: a 2026 update.

Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is an ultrarare paraneoplastic syndrome caused by overproduction of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23). There is low awareness of the disease so that TIO is underdiagnosed. In addition, symptoms reported by patients with TIO are usually nonspecific thus rendering the diagnosis difficult to be made. Biochemical hallmarks are represented by hypophosphatemia, increased or inappropriately normal levels of FGF23, low to low normal circulating 1,25(OH)<inf>2</inf>D and renal phosphate wasting. From the histological point of view, phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors are

Extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma metastasis to a Meckel's diverticulum adenocarcinoma.

Extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma is a rare soft tissue tumour with a high local and distant metastasis rate and limited response to chemotherapy. Meckel's diverticulum is the most frequent congenital anomaly, and it is associated with a considerable risk of malignant transformation. In this case report, we describe a 50-year-old female patient with a history of extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma of the lower limb and metastasis to the forearm who went to the emergency department with abdominal pain. The investigations revealed a caecal volvulus. A lesion in the middle third of the ileum wa

Challenges in the management of tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO).

Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO), also known as oncogenic osteomalacia, is a rare acquired paraneoplastic disease, which is challenging to diagnose and treat. TIO is characterized by hypophosphatemia resulting from excess levels of tumor-secreted fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23), one of the key physiological regulators of phosphate metabolism. Elevated FGF23 results in renal phosphate wasting and compromised vitamin D activation, ultimately resulting in osteomalacia. Patients typically present with progressive and non-specific symptoms, including bone pain, multiple pathological fractures,
