There are major differences between tumors in children and adults, viz. the incidence of tumor types, the predisposition of certain organs and tissues (e.g. sympathetic nervous tissue, kidney, and soft tissues) to develop tumors, problems related to tumor classification, and the biologic behavior of childhood malignancies, which are usually characterized by high rates of proliferation activity. A large number of new entities, especially in soft tissue tumors, have been published over the past years, including nodular mesothelial hyperplasia, which is a tumor-like lesion derived from peritoneal

OBJECTIVES: Solitary fibrous tumours of the pleura (SFTP) are historically considered to be benign soft tissue neoplasms. However, a clinical relevant number of these neoplasms have malignant histological features. The objective of this study was to evaluate the percentage of SFTP presenting unfavourable clinical behaviour in order to predict negative long-term outcome.
METHODS: A retrospective review of 74 patients treated at 4 hospitals between 1990 and 2013 was performed. The median follow-up was 10 years (range: 1-20 years). Risk of tumour recurrence and metastases (unfavourable clinical

Aneurysmal fibrous histiocytoma is an uncommon variant of cutaneous fibrous histiocytomas with a local recurrence rate of 19%. We present a case of aneurysmal fibrous histiocytoma in a 20-year-old female with a regional lymph node metastasis and subsequent satellite nodule. The patient initially presented with a 1-month history of two palpable nodules in left lower anterior shoulder and left axilla. Needle core biopsies from both lesions revealed an atypical spindle cell neoplasm with a differential diagnosis of aneurysmal fibrous histiocytoma and angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma. The axillary

Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNA) is useful because of its low cost, quick turn around time, and low incidence of complications. This study investigates the role FNA plays in the evaluation of sarcoma. We reviewed all the pathologic material from patients with sarcoma or a FNA diagnosis suggestive of sarcoma at the University of California-Davis Medical Center (1985-1994). Fifty-two of 196 patients identified (26.5%) were evaluated with FNA exhibiting 46 soft tissue and 6 bone lesions located in the extremities (19), trunk (19), head and neck (8), retroperitoneum (3), and abdominal cavity

Sclerosing epithelioid fibrosarcoma (SEF) has distinctive morphology and occurs mainly in deep soft tissue of adult extremities. Approximately 59 cases of SEF have been reported, with only 12 previously described in head and neck locations. Lesions involving the oral and maxillofacial region (OMFR) and intraosseous examples are rare. We present five cases of OMFRSEF. The OMF Pathology Department Registry was searched for cases coded from 1990 to the present as "SEF," "fibrosarcoma not otherwise specified" or "neoplasm of uncertain histiogenesis." Inclusion required OMFR location, an abundantly

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms, particularly uncommon in the cheek and floor of the mouth. We report two such cases to emphasize diagnostic and management considerations. A retrospective review at a tertiary academic hospital included two female patients aged 40 and 49 years. Both underwent clinical evaluation, radiologic imaging, surgical excision, and histopathologic assessment with immunohistochemistry, including STAT6, CD34, BCL2, and CD99. Risk stratification was based on mitotic index and histological features. The first case involved a 40-year-old woman wi

Malignant Brenner tumors of the ovary are extremely rare, and imaging features remain poorly characterized. We report a rare case of a malignant Brenner tumor of the ovary with both extra-cystic and intra-cystic solid components. Magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography revealed a left ovarian cystic mass with two distinct solid components: an extra-cystic solid component showing low T2 signal, minimal enhancement, no diffusion restriction on magnetic resonance imaging and dense and amorphous calcifications on computed tomography, and an intra-cystic solid component with heterogeneou

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are the most common mesenchymal neoplasms of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, typically originating from the interstitial cells of Cajal. The clinical presentations are variable according to their size and shape but rarely present as a palpable abdominal mass. Pancreatic pseudocysts are common complications of chronic pancreatitis characterized by fluid collections surrounded by a non-epithelialized wall of fibrous and granulation tissue. Patients may present with non-specific symptoms like abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting and they generally have a h

OBJECTIVE: While the majority of breast neoplasms originate from epithelial cells, a rare part of them originate from mesenchymal breast tissue. This study aims to present the histomorphological and clinicoradiological features of our series of primary mesenchymal breast tumors and to discuss the features of these tumors in light of the literature.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cases diagnosed as primary mesenchymal breast tumor in breast resection materials evaluated in our center between 2010 and 2023 were included.
RESULTS: Of the 26 tumors included, 57.7% were diagnosed as benign and 42.3% as m

The neoplasms of the salivary glands account for 2% of head and neck tumors and the most common form is the Pleomorphic adenoma (PA). Parotid gland is affected from 80% to 90% of cases. In elderly these tumors occur mostly in females. These benign tumors are composed of epithelial and myoepithelial cells that are arranged with various morphological patterns and subtypes. The classification of these tumors is also based on the amount and nature of the stroma. In literature there is an almost complete consensus that, in the major salivary glands, PAs are enclosed by a layer of fibrous tissue oft

BACKGROUND: Tumour-to-tumour metastasis (TTM) occurs when one tumour metastasises to a separate tumour within the same individual. TTM is observed frequently in breast cancer but has not been described in male breast cancer. In addition reports describing solitary fibrous tumours (SFT) of the pleura hosting other neoplasms' metastases are limited. We report an exceptional case of male breast cancer metastasising to an extrapleural SFT, occurring in the subcutaneous tissue of the back of a 68-year old Caucasian patient.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 68-year old male was diagnosed with a metastasising d

Acquired atresia of the external auditory canal is a relatively rare disease, that can be the result of the recurrent external otitis, chronic media otitis, ear trauma, neoplasms or iatrogenic complications. The surgical treatment results after operation in the 7 patients with acquired external auditory canal atresia were presented. The mean age of the patients was 34.1 and the female to male ratio was 2:5. In 6 cases we performed transcanal operation. The meatus atresia was removed and then the stenotic canal was widened by removing the skin and fibrous tissue. We especially focused our atten

A technique was developed to use the pedicle buccal fat pad as method for closing an oro-antral communication. The buccal fat pad is situated in the posterior part of the maxilla and bounded by the pterygopalatine fossa, buccal muscle, and masseter muscle. It is supplied by blood from small branches of the maxillary artery, the superficial temporal artery, and the facial artery. Generally, the buccal fat pad can be easily reached by a horizontal incision over the periosteum near the maxillary third molar. As much as 60 x 50mm2 can be obtained. For reconstructive surgery, the buccal fat pad is

We report a rare case of Albright's syndrome associated with both a soft-tissue myxoma and hypophosphataemic osteomalacia. Renal tubular function was preserved, except for glycosuria. Serum levels of 1,25(OH)2 vitamin D3 were normal. Excision of the myxoma did not influence the biochemical abnormalities, nor did standard doses of vitamin D3 or 1 alpha-OH vitamin D3. The previously reported cases of hypophosphataemic osteomalacia associated with fibrous dysplasia and mesenchymal tumours are reviewed and the underlying mechanism discussed.

Meningiomas are heterogeneous tumors and studies suggest that meningiomas might be part of MEN1 syndrome. The tumors express somatostatin receptors (SSTRs) comparable to that seen in neuroendocrine neoplasms. We aimed to explore neuroendocrine differentiation in meningiomas by investigating the following neuroendocrine markers: neural cell adhesion molecule (CD56/NCAM), chromogranin A, chromogranin B, chromogranin C, neuron-specific enolase (NSE), secretagogin, and synaptophysin. Our findings were related to WHO grade, tumor subtype, and SSTR2 immunoreactivity. Tissue microarrays from 162 pati

Solitary fibrous tumor/hemangiopericytomas (SFT/HPCs) are mesenchymal tumors characterized by "staghorn" blood vessels and collagen deposition. Little is known about SFT/HPCs with papillary architecture. We summarized the clinicopathologic features of 12 patients with papillary SFT/HPCs (8 males and 4 females; median age: 59 years), including 8 previously reported cases. Tumors were present in the meninges (75%, 9/12), adrenal gland (8%, 1/12), orbit (8%, 1/12), or spinal canal (8%, 1/12). Six tumors (50%) had a true papillary architecture with fibrovascular cores and 6 tumors (50%) had a pseu

Intraosseous hemangiomas are uncommon intrabony lesions, representing approximately 0.5 to 1% of all intraosseous tumors. Their description varies from "benign vasoformative neoplasms" to true hamartomatous proliferations of endothelial cells forming a vascular network with intermixed fibrous connective tissue stroma. These commonly present as a firm, painless swelling. Intraosseous hemangiomas present more commonly in females than in males and most likely occur in the fourth decade of life. The most common etiology of intraosseous hemangioma is believed to be prior trauma to the area. They ha
