Three Cases of Atypical Breast Metastasis from Lung Adenocarcinoma.

Metastatic disease to the breast is rare. Melanoma and lymphoma are the most common primary tumors metastasizing to the breast, and breast metastasis from a primary lung neoplasm is uncommon. It can be difficult to distinguish metastatic disease from primary breast cancer clinically. Immunohistochemistry, combined with further diagnostic imaging, play important roles in identifying the primary origin of the malignancy. An accurate diagnosis is imperative for therapeutic planning, and further workup should be considered for unusual cytological patterns. In this report, three cases of pulmonary

Use of Ultrasonographic Shear Wave Measurements to Diagnose Thyroid Metastasis from Breast Carcinoma.

A metastatic thyroid tumor (MTT) arising from breast carcinoma (BC) is rare and sometimes difficult to diagnose. We present a case of MTT from BC; we suspected anaplastic thyroid carcinoma at initial presentation. The patient was a 58-year-old female with a hard nodule in the right anterior neck and a history of breast cancer. Computed tomography indicated tumors on both thyroid lobes, and ultrasonography (US) with shear wave measurement (SWM) showed malignant features. We performed fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC), the results of which led us to strongly suspect MTT from BC. The surgica

Clinical outcomes for pediatric patients receiving radiotherapy for solid tumor central nervous system metastases.

Central nervous system (CNS) metastases are rare, but devastating complications of pediatric solid tumors. Radiotherapy alone or postresection serves as an important treatment; however, data on the use of whole-brain radiotherapy (WBRT) versus focal radiotherapy, including stereotactic radiosurgery or stereotactic radiotherapy, for these indications are limited. We report a single institution experience of 26 pediatric patients treated with radiotherapy for solid tumor CNS metastases without leptomeningeal disease. Focal radiotherapy (n = 10) was well tolerated and survival outcomes did not di

The incidence of newly diagnosed secondary cancer; sub-analysis the prospective study of the second-look procedure for transoral surgery in patients with T1 and T2 head and neck cancer.

BACKGROUND: Our prospective study of patients with early T-stage head and neck cancer indicated a high incidence of newly diagnosed secondary malignancies during the follow-up period. We aimed to determine the incidence rate and risk factors of secondary malignancies in early-stage head and neck cancer patients. METHODS: We sub-analyzed the patient data of a previous study focusing on secondary cancer incidence. The endpoints were statistical analyses of risk factors and survival and incidence rates. RESULTS: The incidence rate of secondary cancer was 37%, the crude incidence of second prima

[A Case of Colon Neuroendocrine Carcinoma Believed to Be a Recurrence of Appendiceal Adenocarcinoma].

Neuroendocrine carcinomas in the right-side colon are rare. We report a case of neuroendocrine carcinoma occurring in the anastomotic site after ileocecal resection. The patient was a 55-year-old man who underwent ileocecal resection for adenocarcinoma in his appendix. Following surgery, he was administered adjuvant chemotherapy. Two and a half years after the surgery, he was diagnosedwith left ilium bone metastasis andreceivedrad iotherapy. After the radiotherapy, an anastomotic tumor andperitoneal metastasis were found. He was administeredFOLFIRI but couldnot tolerate the therapy. After chan

Nasopharyngeal Papillary Adenocarcinoma as a Second Head and Neck Malignancy.

Nasopharyngeal adenocarcinomas are rare tumours, and include neoplasms arising from the nasopharyngeal surface epithelium as well as those of minor salivary gland origin, each of which is distinct from the other. The former encompasses nasopharyngeal papillary adenocarcinoma (NPAC), also known as low grade NPAC and thyroid-like NPAC, an extremely unusual malignancy bearing histomorphological similarity to papillary thyroid carcinoma, and displaying indolent clinical behaviour. We report the case of a 41-year-old lady who developed NPAC as a second malignancy five-and-a-half years after being d

Metachronous solitary metastasis to the thyroid gland from squamous cell carcinoma of the lung: a case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Non-small cell lung cancer presents at an advanced stage at diagnosis in two-thirds of cases. The most frequent metastatic sites are the central nervous system, adrenal glands and bones. By contrast, the thyroid gland is an extremely rare site of dissemination. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 64-year-old Caucasian man previously treated with radiosurgery and brain metastasectomy followed by right middle lobectomy for a squamous cell lung carcinoma had a metachronous solitary metastasis to the thyroid gland, as confirmed by fine-needle aspiration cytology and open biopsy. He underwent curati

Repeated occurrence of second primary lung cancer at different sites in trachea: a case report.

Multiple or second primary lung cancers can develop at any sites in the lung with same or different histologic types, synchronously and/or metachronously. In case of metachronous occurrence of the second primary lung cancer, it is easy to confuse with the primary lung cancer as a recurrence of precedent lung malignancy treated successfully or metastasis. Previous reports have demonstrated that majority of the second primary lung malignancies have same histologic types regardless of their developing time and location. However, the repeated occurrence of the second primary lung malignancy, in pa

Colonic adenocarcinoma as a secondary malignancy after treatment of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma.

BACKGROUND: Survivors of childhood malignancies are known to be at an increased risk for developing a variety of secondary cancers. Primary adenocarcinoma of the colon is very rare in children and adenocarcinoma of the colon occurring as a secondary malignancy in children is much rarer. METHODS: A boy with a history of successfully treated embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma developed adenocarcinoma of the colon as a secondary cancer. RESULTS: The boy presented with a solid mass of the left cheek at 3 years of age. The mass was excised and histological examination showed embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma. H

Late recurrence from a renal cell carcinoma: solitary right maxilar mass 17 years after surgery.

OBJECTIVES: To report a new case of late renal cell carcinoma recurrence. METHODS: Renal cell carcinoma represents approximately 3% of all adult malignancies. The most frequent metastatic sites are lung (76%), regional lymph nodes (66%), bone (42%), and liver (41%), and it is the third most common infraclavicular neoplasm to metastasize to head and neck. RESULTS: 73 year-old man with a 1 week history of recurrent epistaxis. He underwent left nephrectomy 17 years before due to a renal mass of 8.5 cm in the upper pole of the left kidney. The histological diagnosis of the referred mass was clea

Isolated splenic metastasis from colon cancer. Report of a case.

Isolated splenic metastasis is an uncommon event, except in the case of secondary involvement by lymphoma. The most common sites of metastases of colorectal cancer are the regional lymph nodes, liver and peritoneum; lung and bone are rarely involved, the spleen exceptionally. In this paper we report a case of metachronous isolated splenic metastasis of transverse colon cancer in an 80-year-old woman who was successfully treated by splenectomy. The peculiar clinical-pathological aspects of this kind of metastasis are discussed on the basis of our clinical observation and a review is presented o

[Synchronous squamous vulvar and cervical cancer--a case report with literature review and analysis of therapeutic strategies].

We report on a suboptimal surgical treated cancer of the vulva with the accidental diagnosis of a second cancer within the completion of the surgery three weeks later. The patient was 48 years old, presenting with a central, multifocal, exophytic tumor of the clitoris. The primary surgery was: vulvectomy with bilateral inguinal lymphadenectomy ("triple incision"). However, the pathological examination revealed an unsatisfactory surgical result--on the one site (laterally) the tumor reached the resection edge, and on the other site (dorsally) the tumor-free margin was only 1-2 mm. There were 5

Diagnosis and treatment of metachronous gastric cancers after surgical treatment for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: With the improvement of the outcome after esophagectomy for esophageal cancer, patients with metachronous gastric cancer (MGC) in the reconstructed thoracic stomach have been observed in clinical practice. This study is a report of experiences with MGC with an emphasis on clinical pictures and treatment results. METHODOLOGY: Medical records were reviewed of 728 patients who underwent surgery for esophageal cancer at Samsung Medical Center between 1994 and 2004. MGC was defined as follows; (1) diagnosed more than 6 months after esophagectomy, (2) squamous cell carcinoma in his

Laparoscope-assisted distal gastrectomy for early gastric cancer in a 76-year-old man with situs inversus totalis.

We report a case of a 76-year-old man with situs inversus totalis (SIT) who developed early gastric cancer. He was successfully treated by laparoscope-assisted distal gastrectomy for the gastric cancer. This case suggests that patients with SIT with malignancy could also undergo laparoscopic surgery. To the best of our knowledge, no case of laparoscopic surgery for malignant neoplasms associated with SIT has been reported in the English literature. We therefore believe this is the first case report.

Exuberant epibulbar tumor penetrating into the orbit in xeroderma pigmentosum.

The clinical and histopathological findings are described in a 10-year-old girl with xeroderma pigmentosum and multiple ophthalmic complications, including the eyelids, conjunctiva, orbit, cornea and iris; some of these complications took an unusual form. Histological examination following right orbital exenteration revealed an epibulbar squamous cell carcinoma penetrating the orbit and building a noose all around the ocular globe with subsequent strangulation. Moreover, a palpebral squamous cell carcinoma developed independently from the right lower lid and, unconnected with the epibulbar tum
