Exposure to perchlorate, nitrate, and thiocyanate among pregnant women in Norway.

BACKGROUND: The sodium-iodide symporter (NIS) inhibitors perchlorate, thiocyanate, and nitrate are ubiquitous environmental contaminants that competitively inhibit iodine uptake into the thyroid gland as well as iodine transport across the placenta. Globally, iodine deficiency remains common, and inhibition of NIS, reducing iodine transport, may increase the risk of impaired thyroid function. AIM: To characterize pregnant women's exposure to NIS inhibitors by measuring the urine concentrations of perchlorate, thiocyanate, and nitrate, and explore their determinants. We also examined individua

Oral microbial nitrate metabolism is associated with lower prevalence of prediabetes.

The oral microbiome is a key microbial interface for dietary or oral nitrate metabolism, yet its role in early glycemic dysregulation remains poorly defined. In a population-based cohort (n = 472), we perform metagenomic profiling of tongue dorsum microbiomes and identify 11 taxa and nine microbial pathways associated with prediabetes. Among these, Rothia mucilaginosa and microbial nitrate reduction emerge as the only taxon and the strongest pathway associated with lower prediabetes prevalence. Individuals without prediabetes show higher salivary nitrate and nitrite concentrations, supporting

1,3,5-Tri-aza-7-phosphaadamantan-1-ium nitrate.

The title salt, C6H13N3P+·NO3 - or [PTAH][NO3], crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1 with two independent PTAH+ cations and two nitrate anions in the asymmetric unit. In the crystal, N-H⋯O and C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds link the PTAH+ and oxygen atoms of the nitrate anion, forming a three-dimensional supra-molecular structure.

An inundation threshold regulates nitrate reduction pathways in mangrove sediments.

Estuarine hydrological regimes are increasingly altered by dam operations and extreme climate events, reshaping inundation in intertidal wetlands. However, how inundation regulates nitrate (NO3-) fate remains unclear. We conducted an 18-month, elevation-controlled marsh-organ experiment with Avicennia marina-planted and unvegetated sediments across a 0 %-65 % gradient in mean inundation frequency. We combined 15N isotope tracing and metagenomics to quantify NO3- reduction pathways and associated microbial attributes. In unvegetated sediments, increasing inundation reduced the contribution of d

Nitrification of exchangeable ammonium as a source of nitrate in coal mine rock.

Waste rock from coal mining in the Elk Valley, Canada primarily consists of mudstones and siltstones, and contains two natural nitrogen (N) reservoirs: organic N and exchangeable ammonium in clay minerals (NH4+-ex). Although the mean concentration of organic N is greater than that of NH4+-ex (713 ± 615 vs. 31.0 ± 24 mg N/kg), laboratory experiments show NH4+-ex undergoes rapid (< 50 d) nitrification to nitrate (NO3-) while organic N is nonreactive over the time frame of the experiments (393 days). A conceptual model was developed, based on the results of batch experiments to describe the relea

The crystal structure of a spherical vanadium complex encapsulating a nitrate anion.

The crystal structure of a nitrate anion caged in spherical vanadium and oxygen structure surrounded by sodium hy-droxy and water solvent mol-ecules, systematic name poly[[hepta-deca-aqua-tetra-deca-oxidonona-sodium][penta-cosa-aqua-nitratoundeca-oxido-penta-deca-vanadium]], H61NNa9O71V15 is reported. The complex crystallizes in the non-centrosymmetric Cc space group and exhibits many inter- and intra-molecular hydrogen-bonding inter-actions. The complex contains VIV and VV centres, which are six-coordinate or octa-hedrally coordinated. The sodium atoms in this structure sit outside of the sph

Elevated Plasma Nitrate Levels in Patients with Acute Coronary Syndrome.

Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) encompasses a spectrum of coronary artery diseases, including unstable angina, non-ST segment elevation myocardial infarction, and ST-segment elevation MI. At present, ACS is a major cause of mortality and morbidity in the community. The diagnosis of ACS is of critical importance for guiding appropriate therapeutic strategies, although this can be onerous if the standard presenting manifestations are lacking. While high-sensitivity cardiac troponin (hs-cTn) is a proven biomarker of ACS, additional markers to support the clinical diagnosis could be valuable. Since

A Lecithin Liposome Stimulates Soil Microbial Respiration and Nitrate Immobilization.

Liposomes are microscale lipid vesicles used in pharmaceuticals, food products, and most recently, agriculture. Several studies have shown that liposomes can deliver nutrients to plant leaves, often more efficiently than traditional forms. However, the delivery of plant nutrients to soil via liposomes remains understudied. Interactions between liposomes and soil microbes, including metabolism of the lipid carbon (C) and assimilation of liposome-encapsulated nutrients into soil microbial biomass, could alter the availability of nutrients within the soil. We assessed the impact of lecithin lipos

Nitrate reduction for survival in a nanomolar world, not the millimolar world of a laboratory.

This review focuses on some of the persisting misconceptions and even errors in the literature of bacterial denitrification and the respiratory reduction of nitrate to ammonia. Both processes were traditionally investigated using pure culture laboratory techniques and substrate concentrations in the high micromolar or millimolar range. These concentrations are 1000-fold higher than those found in the nanomolar natural environments in which bacterial metabolism continues to evolve. Many of the enzymes involved in anaerobic nitrate reduction are metalloproteins that are easily inactivated by exp

Photosensitizers Regulate Nitrate Photoproduct Yields in Bulk Aqueous Matrices.

Photolysis of nitrate (NO3-) in the presence of photosensitizers is thought to promote the release of atmospherically important reactive nitrogen species (NOy), such as HONO, via mechanisms that are poorly understood. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted photochemistry studies on mixtures of NO3-, a model photosensitizer [4-benzoylbenzoic acid (4-BBA)], and various aliphatic organic matter proxies. We found that aliphatic organic matter enhances the production of NOy and superoxide (O2-) from bulk aqueous nitrate photolysis, while the addition of 4-BBA decreases NOy and O2- yields in mo

Unraveling the aggregation mechanism and bioactivity of Tyr12 nitrated human calcitonin.

The development of therapeutic human calcitonin (hCT) is limited by its irreversible aggregation to form amyloid fibrils. Salmon calcitonin (sCT), a clinical alternative, with only 50 % hCT sequence homology causes severe side effects, making the development of anti-fibrillation hCT analogs more promising in achieving therapeutic goals. It is reported that Tyr12 plays a critical role in inducing hCT fibrils. We also found that tyrosine nitrated hCT (3-NT-hCT) not only inhibits self-assembly of hCT, but also has little effect on its hypocalcaemic potency in vivo. In order to fully elucidate its

Nitrate and Nitrite in the Diet: Protective and Harmful Effects in Health and Disease.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The environmental presence of excess nitrogen poses a significant threat to biodiversity, human health, and climate stability. Conversely, nitrogen deficiency can hinder our ability to sustainably provide sufficient food for the global population. The impact of nitrates and nitrites on human health is intricately tied to their concentrations in water and food sources. The aim of the following article was to summarize the data on the effects of nitrates on health, with particular emphasis on their effect on the thyroid gland. RECENT FINDINGS: Current scientific findings indic…

Vadose zone flushing of fertilizer tracked by isotopes of water and nitrate.

A substantial fraction of nitrogen (N) fertilizer applied in agricultural systems is not incorporated into crops and moves below the rooting zone as nitrate (NO3 -). Understanding mechanisms for soil N retention below the rooting zone and leaching to groundwater is essential for our ability to track the fate of added N. We used dual stable isotopes of nitrate (δ 15N-NO3 - and δ 18O-NO3 -) and water (δ 18O-H2O and δ 2H-H2O) to understand the mechanisms driving nitrate leaching at three depths (0.8, 1.5, and 3.0 m) of an irrigated corn field sampled every 2 weeks from 2016 to 2020 in the souther

Electrochemical degradation and mineralisation of organic dyes in aqueous nitrate solutions.

Electrochemical treatment of organic matter for environmental remediation necessitates the development of cheap and robust electrodes that are chemically and structurally stable. To address this challenging requirement, we demonstrate a new electrochemical approach using a simple copper electrode under cathodic conditions to electrochemically generate reactive nitrosonium ions for the degradation of different classes of synthetic organic dyes. This could be achieved in an aqueous HNO3/KNO3 electrolyte at a relatively low cathodic potential of -0.5 V RHE at room temperature. UV-visible absorpti

Effects of Helicobacter pylori and Nitrate-Reducing Bacteria Coculture on Cells.

Helicobacter pylori infection is an important risk factor for developing gastric cancer. However, only a few H. pylori-infected people develop gastric cancer. Thus, other risk factors aside from H. pylori infection may be involved in gastric cancer development. This study aimed to investigate whether the nitrate-reducing bacteria isolated from patients with atrophic gastritis caused by H. pylori infection are risk factors for developing atrophic gastritis and gastric neoplasia. Nitrate-reducing bacteria were isolated from patients with atrophic gastritis caused by H. pylori infection. Among th

Modeling particulate nitrate in China: Current findings and future directions.

Particulate nitrate (pNO3) is now becoming the principal component of PM2.5 during severe winter haze episodes in many cities of China. To gain a comprehensive understanding of the key factors controlling pNO3 formation and driving its trends, we reviewed the recent pNO3 modeling studies which mainly focused on the formation mechanism and recent trends of pNO3 as well as its responses to emission controls in China. The results indicate that although recent chemical transport models (CTMs) can reasonably capture the spatial-temporal variations of pNO3, model-observation biases still exist due t
