Variations of the profile of the nose of the upper lip.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to analyze the path needed to achieve a good aesthetic and functional result in patients treated with orthognathic surgery. METHODS: Seventy-three patients with only III class malocclusion were treated with sagittal split ramus osteotomy and with Le Fort I in only one piece. Through the analysis of anatomical cephalometric tracings, changes in the skeletal base, upper incisor and nose's shape were evaluated. The statistical analysis measurements were calculated for each length and for each angle at T0 (preoperative value) and at T1 (postoperative value). …

A Combined Approach To Crooked Nose Deformity.

BACKGROUND: Crooked nose deformity is a complex anatomical deformity; therefore, repair remains a challenge. Here, we introduce a new technique for crooked nose deformity repair. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-two patients underwent intraoperative evaluations and measurements, followed by surgery using the open rhinoplasty technique. Our method involves three major steps. First is the creation of an asymmetric medial oblique osteotomy using piezoelectric ultrasonic surgery and double lateral osteotomies, wherein the asymmetric bony ascending part of the maxillary bone at the base of the nasal …

Mucocutaneous leishmaniasis of the nose: a case report.

Mucocutaneous leishmaniasis of the nose: a case report. Leishmaniasis is a parasitic infection that is rarely seen in Belgium. The majority of new diagnoses are seen in patients living in or visiting endemic regions, which are mostly developing countries. Here we describe the case of a 60-year-old male patient who was referred to an ENT specialist because of an erythematous swelling of the left side of the nose tip, which had persisted for 3 months. Biopsies showed the presence of leishmaniasis. This case report alerts ENT physicians that leishmaniasis is part of the differential diagnosis in …

[Foreign bodies (disk batteries) in the nose].

This paper reports the results of analysis of the treatment of 8 children after the removal a disk battery from the nasal cavity. It was shown that the restoration of all the structures of the nasal cavity is possible if the foreign body remains in it during a short (up to 5 hours) time. The longer presence of such a body in the nasal cavity gives rise to post-traumatic defects, in the first place septal perforations and injuries to the inferior turbinated bone. In such cases, the foreign body must be immediately removed from the nasal cavity, and the child should be placed under thorough medi

[Some features of the nose in craniofacial malformations].

In craniofacial malformations, the nose is variably affected: in its location, its shape or by lack of development. In this short chapter, some of the common problems encountered by the specialized teams are summarized. Craniofacial astronomies can modify the skeleton of the nose during growth, sometime at an early age. However, most rhinoplasties are performed at adulthood. The nasal pyramid may present deformations that produce functional and aesthetics impairment that should be treated when necessary. Respiratory problems should be recognized as early as possible and treated in priority.

[Diseases of the nose and paranasal sinuses in childhood].

Diseases of the pediatric nose and paranasal sinuses as well as neighboring anatomical structures encompass a variety of pathologies, especially of inflammatory nature. Congenital disease, such as malformations and structural deviations of the nasal septum, as well as systemic metabolic pathologies affecting the nose and sinuses, rarely require medical therapy from an Otolaryngologist. The immunological function of the mucosa and genetic factors play a role in the development of disease in the pediatric upper airway tract, especially due to the constantly changing anatomy in this growth phase.…

Saddle-nose deformities in the rheumatology clinic.

Saddle-nose deformity can occur as a result of trauma to the nose, but it has also been well described in the setting of infections such as leprosy and syphilis and idiopathic inflammatory conditions such as granulomatosis with polyangiitis (formerly known as Wegener granulomatosis) and relapsing polychondritis. Since these deformities may also arise without an evident precipitating cause, they can pose a diagnostic conundrum. We review 2 cases of saddle-nose deformity that were treated at Northwick Park Hospital in Middlesex, England. The first patient was a 53-year-old woman who presented wi…

Tuberculosis of nose and palate with vanishing uvula.

During the past two decades, tuberculosis - both pulmonary and extrapulmonary - has re-emerged as a major health problem worldwide. Nasal tuberculosis - either primary or secondary to pulmonary tuberculosis or facial lupus - is rare, but it should be considered in the differential diagnosis of nasal granulomas. We describe a case of tuberculosis in an adult male who presented with palatal perforation with vanishing uvula and arch deformity of the palate. The diagnosis was based on histopathology and patient's successful response to antituberculous drug treatment.

The importance of the nasal septum in the deviated nose.

The nasal septum plays an important role in both the appearance and function of the nose. Deviation of the nose is common and correction requires a focused, anatomically based treatment. Reconstruction and support of the septum is a necessary component to a straight nose. The "four R's" of nasal septal repair--resection, reposition, reconstruction, and replacement--can be used to straighten the septum and maximize nasal appearance and function.

Traumatic rhinoplasty in the non-Caucasian nose.

Traumatic injury resulting in nasal deformity poses unique challenges to the surgeon. Optimal management requires careful preoperative analysis and thoughtful surgical planning. The goals of rhinoplasty are to correct both cosmetic and functional problems that may not have otherwise been an issue prior to the injury. Although it is overly simplistic to group all individuals from one ethnicity as having one type of nose, the rhinoplasty surgeon must understand the common variations of nasal anatomy seen in various races of individuals. This article discusses ethnic anatomic differences in the n…

Treatment of nasal obstruction in the posttraumatic nose.

The sequelae of trauma to the nose include nasal deformity and nasal obstruction that can have a long-term negative impact on patient quality of life. Successful management of posttraumatic nasal obstruction relies on a detailed history, careful analysis, and accurate diagnosis. Dividing the nose into horizontal thirds assists in preoperative analysis as well as surgical treatment. Adequate treatment of posttraumatic nasal obstruction must address deflection of the bony nasal pyramid, septal deformities (especially caudal or dorsal), turbinate hypertrophy, and incompetence of internal and exte…

Open rhinoplasty for African-American noses.

Our aim was to evaluate the use of open rhinoplasty for cosmesis on African-American noses. Thirty African-American patients with Fitzpatrick skin type V or VI and typical African-American noses who had had open rhinoplasty between January 1997 and November 2000, and at least 3-years' follow-up were selected and their casenotes examined retrospectively. Patients' evaluations were recorded at all consultations and the data was recorded on standard protocols together with objective measurements including wound healing and complications. All patients thought that the definition and projection of …
